Ron Wilson Deserves Some Respect

If the NHL handed out awards for half seasons, would there be any doubt that Toronto Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson would be among a handful of candidates for Coach of the Year for the second half of this NHL season?  After suffering a 3-2 defeat to the Columbus Blue Jackets on December 30th, 2010 the Leafs record sat at an uninspiring 13-19-4.  Much of the blame for that record was placed squarely on the shoulders of our at times moody head coach.

I don’t recall a post game (win or lose) theme that didn’t in some shape or form include vast criticism of our coaching staff and the inevitable “Fire Ron Wilson” mantra.  Some of that critique might have been warranted but when considering the goaltending available to him to that point it is hard to solely blame one man (Ron Wilson) for the first half struggles of an entire team.

With James Reimer providing superb goaltending (and a save percentage not hovering around .880) the Maple Leafs since January 1st, 2011 have been a revelation with a 23-13-6 record.  An impressive turn around to say the least and after the Leafs big win over our little brother’s from Ottawa our record now sits at 37-32-10 – not too shabby.

Ron Wilson deserves a great deal of respect for the way he continued to persevere and keep the Maple Leafs playing hard and buying into his system.  There hasn’t been much in the way of “Fire Ron Wilson” recently but I also haven’t heard many positive things being said or written about him either. He deserves a ton of credit in my opinion.

The Leafs play hard until the final horn sounds on most nights and continue to show heart no matter what the scoreboard says, having come from behind on more than a few occasions this year – the team has won five times this year when trailing entering the third period, leaving them top ten in the league in the category. When established players like Kris Versteeg, Francois Beauchemin and Tomas Kaberle were shipped out I think more than a few of us might have worried about how the remainder of this season would go but the Maple Leafs have actually played their best hockey since becoming the youngest team in the NHL.

The way Wilson didn’t coddle Keith Aulie, providing and rewarding him with big minutes, seemed to allow him to take his new role by the horns. The decision to call up Kadri and play him with Darryl Boyce and Joey Crabb shortly thereafter had more than a few fans wondering but Kadri appears to be fitting in nicely and further developing the defensive side of his game while chipping in offensively with increased frequency away from the pressures of playing alongside Kessel.

Solid goaltending, timely scoring from multiple sources and lines and a resurgent blue line being led by our captain Dion Phaneuf has Leafs nation abuzz down the stretch of the 2010-11 season.  Although the Leafs won’t make the playoffs once again, what the team has shown for the better part of three months has given many fans around Leafs nation something to get excited about as well as much needed hope and optimism that things are indeed improving.

We have a cupboard full of draft picks, a great deal of money coming off the books and a solid crop of good young hockey players ready to make an impact at the NHL level (think Nazem Kadri, Joe Colborne, Jake Gardiner, Matt Frattin, Greg McKegg etc) and in my opinion a man behind the bench who is deserving of a bit of respect and a vote of confidence.

Ron Wilson is a solid head coach.

Also expect Colborne to get the final call-up (If I count correctly, Aulie, Kadri and Lashoff were the 3 Burke used, and he has one left).

Didn’t Aulie get called up before the deadline? if so he doesn’t count against out post deadline call ups and we should be able to call up two people if needed.

If Colborne is called up, where does he play and who sits?
I’d like to see him given a chance on a line with Lupul and Kessel, and I guess Rosehill sits out with Boyce bumped to the fourth line:
    MacArthur – Grabovski – Kulemin
    Lupul – Colborne – Kessel
    Kadri – Bozak – Crabb
    Boyce – Brent – Brown

Burke had to burn a call up on Aulie to place him on the Marlies playoff roster.

If he comes up, I wouldn’t be surprized to see him play on Bozak’s wing, as he did in college.

The damn Bruins choked nicely tonight, and, there’s no way Buffalo is going to lose their last 3 games.
Next season, we won’t have to scoreboard watch or depend on other teams to see if we get in the playoffs. The character and confidence our Leafs gained and realized will insure that we’re not in this position for a long. long time. The Leafs did everything in their power to make it to 8th place. If we would have had this team for all 82 games, we would be in the playoffs, without a doubt.
The exciting thing is, all we’re going to get is better, moving forward. Burke will aquire the few players we need over the summer, and, the 2011-2012 season will be one to remember.

    @chansler
    Clayton Hansler
Ben Scrivens & Matt Caruana are both included on the ECHL Royals playoff roster. The Kelly Cup did a thing or two for Reimer’s development.

I hate baseball. My hardcore sporting life is over for 5 months or so. I’ll watch the playoffs religiously of course, but it won’t be the same….

    @ Cameron:

I have a strong feeling NY will go after richards…while they do have decent centers in their system they still don’t have that #1 guy…the same thing the leafs are missing…. They are looking for a set up man for gaborik. They tried prospal as that guy at the beginning of the year and it didn’t work and they believe that gaboriks struggles this year are strongly to do with who he’s playing with. That reason as well as richards and torts relationship i think NY is a strong candidate

Yea, I think the Tortorella relationship is a bullshit fabricated element to the whole thing though. Who signs for a coach? In all likelihood, Tortorella won’t even be there in a year or 2. Also, having 4 20 goal centers is a lot different than having Grabovski and Bozak, which is our situation. There have also been strong rumors that Gaborik is on the block, so I’m not sold that they are desperately willing to go back against the cap to get him a center. They’ll have about 9 million to sign Richards and 3 defensemen, and that assumes they buyout Drury and Avery as expected. It’s not a homerun for them by any stretch.

RFA’s can hold out, but they need to hold out the whole season to become a UFA. If the Islanders don’t move forward next year, I would strongly suggest this option for John Tavares if I were his agent. Go play in the KHL for a year, come back to the NHL at 22 as UFA.

He went to arbitration, and the team walked away from him, which made him a UFA temporarily. This would never happen with a big name player like Callahan or Dubinsky, because the team would match just to not lose a valuable asset.

Yeah its true, can you really think of a player who would like to be coached by torts, he seems like such a douche haha….he freaks out on players over the smallest things. and wasn’t it one of the montreal players that said the other day that skating lines is nothing compared to 6am practices with torterella, theres no way anyone would want to play there…especially richards…i hope

au contraire Bobby… Richards attributes a lot of the player he is to torts and the mutual respect that they have for eachother is the predominant reason that Richards WILL be a ranger for next season.
