Marlies This Week: Post Mortem

Much like the parent Maple Leafs, the Marlies will look back ruefully at a bad start and a poor powerplay in assessing the damage of a playoff-less 2010-11 season. With AHL playoff seeding decided by divisional rankings, the Marlies started out the season by losing eight of nine to divisional opponents. In a season in which they lost 22 games by one-goal, a second-from-bottom powerplay firing at a measly 13.1% clip was undoubtedly another nail in the Marlies coffin.

While it’s never used as an excuse, the turnover the Marlies experienced as a result of ongoing chances with the parent club had its undeniable imapct. While Ben Scrivens helped provide really solid goaltending in Reimer‘s absence, Nazem Kadri was recalled at the wrong time from the Marlies perspective as they lost their best offensive performer at a critical juncture. The graduation of Darryl Boyce and Joey Crabb around the 35 game mark saw two experienced forwards lost for the remainder of the season.

It’s for these reasons you cannot take the result of the season with too much disappointment. From Dave Nonis’ and Dallas Eakin’s perspective, it’s about developing players into pros and provided there has been steps forward in this regard, the playoffs are but a nice bonus. With the emergence of the names mentioned above, it attests to this farm system doing just that and a pretty damn good job of it.

Your weekly Marlies release:

“The Marlies dropped three games last week and were eliminated from the playoffs  Wednesday morning by the Syracuse Crunch. Ryan Hamilton extended his goal scoring streak to three games in the loss to the Crunch, but it wasn’t enough for the Marlies to overcome Syracuse’s three-goal, third period.

On Saturday, the Lake Erie Monsters blanked the Marlies 2-0 at Ricoh Coliseum. Jason Bacashihua made 21 saves for the shutout; while Ben Scrivens turned aside 22 saves on 23
shots. Ben Walter’s first period goal held up to be the game winner.

The Marlies fell to the Manitoba Moose on Sunday, 3-2 in front of 7,779 fan at Ricoh Coliseum. Joe Colborne and Ryan Hamilton both netted goals for the Marlies in the loss.

contests.

On Sunday the Marlies close out their 2010-11 regular season with a tilt against the Heat.
Toronto has a record of 3-4-0-0 against Abbotsford this season. The Heat have won three straight games and are three points out of a playoff spot.

Right now i think Burke will try to add a 1st line Center by dangling 1st round picks , Bozak , Gunnerson and prospects (not saying all the above but some combination) Reason is Bozak Gunnerson are easily replaceable come July 1st. Outside of Richards there is no #1 center on JULY 1 so Richards is burkes number 2 option. 1st being trying to aquire one via trade.

Players that COULD be avaible via the trade

    P.Stastny
    S.Horcoff
    R.Getzlaf
    J.Thortan
    S.Weiss
    J.Spezza
    T.Zajac
    N.Antropov
    V.Lecalivier
    E.Malkin
    J.Carter

All players COULD be avaible for the right price and also depending on how their teams do in the Playoffs this year
Examples. Carter, Getzlaf and Thortan. 3 guys that if thier teams loose out in the 1st or 2nd rounds and have a bad playoffs they might be willing to move these guys to make room for younger players and to balance out their rosters with the players they could aquire for them. Also cap reasons.

Again i am just saying that they COULD be had not necessarily that they will be avaible just maybe.

Some guys on that list make sence(Stastny, Carter examples) while others dont (Horcoff, Antropov) but i think Burke has a list much like that and when he makes phone calls about them players at the draft he will determine if its worth waiting untill July 1(richards) or to try to persue someone via the trade.

If he does aquire a Center Via trade and uses Bozak and Gunnerson just say

Guys in the Free agent class that could help out are guys like

    Glenncross
    Upshall
    Liach

A buddy of mine and I were talking about the Leafs earlier today. I was saying what a gr8 finish they had and that they need that first line center.
He suggested that Evgeni Malkin from Pittsburgh should be the guy Burke should make a pitch for. He made a really good point around all the cap problems the Penguins will have when it comes time to re-new Staal. There is no way they’re going to be able to afford all three of Staal, Crosby and Malkin.
This gets me excited about the possiblity of a player of Malkin’s calibre coming to the Leafs. He fits right in to the age demo and the type of player we need to take Kessel and the entire team to the next level.
What do you guys think? I believe we have the assets that could make a very attractive offer to Pittsburgh. Malkin makes 8.7 million for the next 3 years, I believe. What do you think we’d have to give up?
    Thoughts?

Well, Malkin is one of the true super stars in the league and he turns 25 in July. He still has a huge upside too. Imagine him and Kessel and Kulimen playing together…scary!

He is also a risk because of 2 major knee surgeries. If I knew he was 100% I would not hesitate to ship the 2 firsts, boz and a prospect. He would love to be the man on a team and the line of him flanked by Lupul and Kessel would be scary good. It’s just the knees makes me say pass.

Off limits are the defense except Komisarek and Lebda; Lupul, Kessel Graob and Kulemin and MacA

I think as soon as he went on IR. Why wait, it only delays the rehab and puts October at risk. Keep in mind he had major reconstructive surgery.

id consider malkin but his injuries are scary, huge upside if it worked out but huge risk if it doesn’t… however he does have the potential to be a top 5 player in the league and i think if u get the opportunity to take that risk u gotta take it

Penguins All-Star center Evgeni Malkin will have surgery Thursday to repair two torn ligaments in his right knee and will be out until training camp in September, the team announced.

Although Malkin and doctors had been weighing treatment options since Malkin got hurt Friday night, surgery and a long recovery period remained the most likely course.

Malkin is expected to need six months to recover.:

You’d think with the season that Logan Couture has had with San Jose, that one of their other 3 centers would be available for the right price. That would be Thornton, Marleau, and, Pavelski

Brad Richards may, indeed, be the best logical choice for our first line center afterall then. Yes, he would come with a new, huge, long term salary, but, we wouldn’t have to give up any prospects, picks, or roster players to get him. The chemistry on this Leafs squad hasn’t been this good for years. It would be nice to keep everyone intact.
