MLHS Morning Mashup: Is Colborne Coming?

Despite a late third period rally with quick goals by Phil Kessel and linemate Tyler Bozak, the Leafs weren’t able to mount a comeback over the Devils in their final road game of the season. The Leafs looked a team understandably disheartened by the realization they were no longer playing meaningful hockey. Hopefully the final game against an arch rival on Saturday provides a better send off in front of the home crowd.

James Reimer had a strong start to the night, with several impressive stops through the opening frame, but appeared to show signs of fatigue after surrendering three straight goals, including a snipe by Ilya Kovalchuk on the powerplay. Reimer was replaced by Giguere to open the third period, who fared much better in his first appearance in several weeks.

As the Leafs prepare for their final game of the regular season on Saturday against Montreal, Ron Wilson and the rest of the coaching staff will evaluate the roster and likely recall a forward from the Toronto Marlies. All signs point to Joe Colborne, who was expected to replace Armstrong in the lineup after he went down to injury, but was sidelined with a head injury of his own. It will be an excellent stage to audition for a full time spot on the Leafs next season.

The Marlies will get a new arrival of their own in near-50-goal-man Greg McKegg after the elimination of his Erie Otters from the OHL playoffs was followed quickly by a three year entry level contract with the Maple Leafs. McKegg is eligible to play out the season in the AHL given his junior season is finished but as an 18-year-old he cannot play there until the same juncture next season.

Quotables:

“Though this whole run the fans have been unbelievable. It’s been great for our young guys to experience a playoff-type buzz and atmosphere, not only in our building but around the city with people wishing you the best and pulling for you. People might not think there’s a lot to play for but at the end of the day, there’s still a lot there.”

I just got a semi looking at that 3rd line! lol

That 3rd line may show flashes of brilliance, but for the most part, they would most likely get eaten alive. Both Kadri and Colbourne would still be learning the ropes and prone to rookie mistakes. I can see them costing us more goals against than goals for.

You mean like the Kessel line? We’ll have 3 lines that can score, with one defensivly responsible guy on each, then a good shutdown 4th line. We need offence more than anything

Not sure about that. Kadri is much improved in hi defensive play, and Army is Army. They will not get too much ice vs opposition top lines. I am not sure of Colbornes defensive play, but if he can adjust to the bigs as quick as BB predicts they will be fine. I am sure this line would light it up pretty good.

As for Markov idea, I’ve thought long and hard about it for a while now. I think he wants to stay with Montreal, but they would want to protect against injury by giving him a 1-2 year contract. To get Markov, we would have to give him term as he also knows this may be his last contract if his injury problems continue. I would therefore offer him a 3-4 year contract at 2.5M per. We have the cap room and we would definitely have an all star PP QB is he remains healthy allowing our younger guys to continue to develop properly in the A. I like the 1-2 year term but doubt that he would sign with Toronto over Montreal if both offer same term. I live in Montreal and know what this guy is worth to this city and he knows it too. That being said, I still feel that another cup hunting team may offer him a 1 year 5M contract. My 2 cents!

And really not to all that hard to achieve. I have full faith that BB will be able to pry a legit top line center from somebody. I assume he will do this before the Richards sweepstakes.
We need a proven puck mover and scorer, and a FA at that. We have cap space and keep our assets. If we can’t land Wisniewski, then Ehrhoff, or take a flyer on Markov, as previously mentioned. The D cap hit should come in somewhere around $22 mil, i figure. When our kids are really groomed and ready, then the FA signing is another asset to restock for the future or fill another pressing need.

If ANA gets knocked out of the playoffs early, Loops is making sure Perry comes to T.O. is all :)
    .
i think i’d try Kadri on Grabo’s left wing next year in place of Mac. Kadri will likely be most successful as a premier passes and playmaker. Grabo and Kuli are proven finishers now and both very smart and reliable defensively.
Mac-Bozak-Army would be make a veteran 3rd line that could make a top 9 capable of scoring and checking IMO.
Problem is that top line centre obviously. i don’t have a solution for that unless Richards is signed or a trade is made.
There are some Upshall and Laich options to persue that would shore up that 3rd line but then you’d be trying Kadri between Kessel and Lupol?
Arnott? haha, it’s always fun playing GM. i have to stop myself now before my head explodes.

Meh, i guess i just have higher expectations for the captain of the organization

i understand, but i think Dion was doing the “captain” things off-ice all along (judging by the coach’s and GM’s comments) … i think the injury set him back a lot, or rather delayed his “finding himself”. in 2011 he has been a captain i can be happy about, and i am fine with the honey moon taking as long as it did so long as this is the Dion we get going forward.
