MLHS Morning Mashup: Youth is Served

The Leafs second half surge was in large part  the result of unexpected play from several Toronto Marlie callups in James Reimer, Keith Aulie, Darryl Boyce and Joey Crabb. Looking to take his first step towards graduation, Joe Colborne has been recalled from the farm while he was in the midst of an impressive 18-game stint with the Marlies, scoring eight goals and adding seven assists. If Colborne manages to perform half as good as he did in his debut with the Marlies – a two-goal performance – the Leafs would be ecstatic. Expectations in check, it’s a one-game wetting of the feet that we shouldn’t read too far into either way.

Same goes for 23-year old college senior Matt Frattin, who signed a two-year entry level contract with the Leafs on Friday and will join Colborne in making his Leafs and NHL debut. The product of North Dakota won’t play a top six role, but will form an intriguing third line alongside Tyler Bozak and Nazem Kadri.

Quotables:

“I got to play the last game last season. That taste gets left in your mouth the entire summer and [making the NHL] is something you strive for all summer long. You don’t forget.”

    @ Cameron:
I believe Carbonneau is coaching in Chicoutimi with the Quebec junior league. I know you said like a Carbonneau though, so who else could be out there that could help ? They do need to change some of the staff though, if for no other reason than the players get tired of the same approach and same voices. What they have now just isn’t working.

Yea, I have no idea to be honest. One thing I don’t follow is coaching. I’m sure there is some guru out there who knows what he’s doing and wants a shot. The Buffalo farm coach has produced an AHL rookie of the year 3 straight seasons – maybe he knows how to run a PP/PK?

I am pretty excited about Colborne. And I said last night, it takes certain external pressure off Nazem while adding some friendly competition internally.

What about MacT as a specialty coach? He seems like the kind of guy players would go through walls for. Maybe too big of a personality to share the bench with Wilson though.

I wonder how Torts ever got along as an assistant coach before he was ready to take the lead.

One consolation for Frattin if he’s wearing that number. He will instantly become a Wilson favorite.

    @ Cameron:
I like that idea, he was a very good penalty killer as a player. I don’t know the stats for his teams while he was in charge in Edmonton though. I think Wilson is secure enough in his position to check his ego and work with MacT.

Lupul would immediately ask for a trade if Mac T goes behind our bench in any capacity.

That’s right, forgot about their time in Edmonton together. I think it would undermine Wilson to have such a friendly player’s coach there anyways, even if Wilson was comfortable with it.

Babchuk would be a good target for a defensemen on a short deal. He might get lost on July 1st (assuming he makes it there), and would be offensive enough, and big enough, to help us out next year. I like it because he’s been effective on two different teams now, neither one of them dominant. Not like Ehrhoff who’s hockey career has seen a silver spoon hanging out of his mouth for its duration.

Do you honestly think Burke will make any moves on defense this year? I don’t think so , at least not until the right one becomes available.

@BurtonBoy: The interesting question about Burkie going for another D player is, what effect could it have on Dion? Number of comments made here suggested Dion improved after Kabs left, and then there were the confirming posts that a lot of us thought Dion was at his best when he felt he was the #1.
