MLHS Morning Mashup: Youth is Served

The Leafs second half surge was in large part  the result of unexpected play from several Toronto Marlie callups in James Reimer, Keith Aulie, Darryl Boyce and Joey Crabb. Looking to take his first step towards graduation, Joe Colborne has been recalled from the farm while he was in the midst of an impressive 18-game stint with the Marlies, scoring eight goals and adding seven assists. If Colborne manages to perform half as good as he did in his debut with the Marlies – a two-goal performance – the Leafs would be ecstatic. Expectations in check, it’s a one-game wetting of the feet that we shouldn’t read too far into either way.

Same goes for 23-year old college senior Matt Frattin, who signed a two-year entry level contract with the Leafs on Friday and will join Colborne in making his Leafs and NHL debut. The product of North Dakota won’t play a top six role, but will form an intriguing third line alongside Tyler Bozak and Nazem Kadri.

Quotables:

“I got to play the last game last season. That taste gets left in your mouth the entire summer and [making the NHL] is something you strive for all summer long. You don’t forget.”

    @ Waiting4LSC:
I think the reason Phaneuf’s game picked up is because his leg became completely healed and he was finally back into game shape. I really don’t think it had much, if anything to do with the departure of Kaberle.
    .
Although, if you look at his time in Calgary, he bagan to struggle once Bouwmeester was brought in, so maybe there is something to it?

So we need Grabs to get a single goal to have 3-over-30… Or Mac needs to score 9 tonight. Either way, I’m good!

The reason his game suffered in Calgary was reduced ice-time, and piss poor forwards. It is the same reason his game didn’t pick up immediately in Toronto. You need your forwards doing certain things to open up shooting lanes and allow you to rush effectively. The reason he improved this year is because (a) he got healthy, and (b) our forwards improved monumentally. Kaberle might have been hindering him on the powerplay with his predictability, but otherwise I think that argument is a crock.

Thanks for tempering expectations Greg. It will be nice to see what these guys look like in a Leafs sweater and it will be nice little experience for them but it’s just one game and few would argue either is NHL ready at this point

So who goes from our defense if he does that? I won’t disagree with you because you have a point worth considering but I wouldn’t mind at all standing pat giving Lasshoff a chance . Of course Lebda is history. Do we run with 8 D?

If it was Babchuk, just for sake of argument:
    -
    Aulie – Phaneuf ‘C’
    Gunnarsson – Schenn
    Babchuk – Komisarek
    (Lashoff)
    -
Then you’ve got Phaneuf/Babchuk on the 1st PP unit, Gunnarsson/Schenn on the 2nd. Should be pretty effective. And remember – we will have injuries. Even though injuries crippled us this year, we were actually pretty lucky not to have more.
    -
I also like the idea of adding another Russian with Grabovski and Kulemin being so great for us.

I think what appeared to be poor decision making was actually a part of his injury. He was unsure of what he was going to be able to do because his mobility and speed was so limited by his leg. It was visibly obvious that his skating was not where it was, and yet, it would have been instinct to rush or pinch as he normally would. The decisions stopped looking foolish when he started being able to make them work again physically.

The injury probably had a lot to do with it, but he was making those same frequent mistakes pre-injury too. Maybe injury + getting used to a new role in a new city. Still, I can’t imagine Reimer’s play not having an affect on him.

@Cameron: Burkie says he is building for the future. If he could get Suter or Shea Weber then he would be building with core talent. For me this would be brilliant, but he would have to trade some other D. The only person that would make an immediate difference would be Komi, but there is the NTC. I believe he has to give our young D core time. Have I argued that the future is here for the D and that it will be unlikely that he will bring in an elite player even if the chance is there?

Oh, no doubt that having a goalie you trust changes everything. It removes that instant of doubt and allows you to act on instinct. I just don’t like pretending that Reimer is single handedly responsible for everyone playing so well. Reimer was occssionally spectacular, yes, but largely just reliable and sturdy. Huge for our team, of course, but not Price or Miller-esque, making everyone else look far better than they are.

Yep my math is really fucked up LOL . We would carry 7 most likely minus Lebda so that still leaves room for Lasshoff. We need a 7th so he might well be looking for someone short term then. Unless he decides to use someone from the Marlies until Gardiner is ready.

Komisarek’s NTC is not very limiting. A team like Nashville might even want Komisarek if they are letting Suter walk for instance. After next season, Komisarek becomes affordable salary wise (3.5 million). Perhaps next off-season, when Suter is approaching UFA status, Burke does something like Komisarek, Gunnarsson, pick for Suter (w/ a pre-agreed upon extension). When I suggest Babchuk, I’m just saying we need a stop gap offensively (unless RIchards signs here).

I would be surprized if Pitkanen came that cheap. Paul Martin got 5 despite being a bit older, and a little less productive. I’m thinking 5.5 for him, and at that price, I’d rather wait for someone a bit better.

I think 4.5 is fair. Burke can make it like a komisarek contract where he makes 5.5, 6 and then less. Depends if he wants to come here thats all. 5 is still fair but your right, 5.5 is too much
