MLHS Morning Mashup: Ending in Defeat

It was far from a satisfying send off but last night’s 4-1 loss to the Habs was in some ways a microcosm of 2010-11 season that was. With their powerplay quite literally working against them, the Leafs put themselves in a hole early, showed some fight back and ultimately fell short, while some promising youthful performances comprised a silver lining for a better tomorrow. That said, it seemed a good portion of the Leafs roster was still suffering from the hangover of a playoff run fallen short, the giveaways and breakaways against were plentiful and the effort generally uninspired.

It’s important to keep one game in perspective but debutants Frattin and Colborne gave Leafs fans a pretty good feel for what the future may hold last night. Colborne’s frame will need some further filling out but he looked like an unrefined model of that big-bodied skilled center fans have been yearning for since Mats Sundin’s departure. Matt Frattin showed no hesitation in getting right in the mix with a high-tempo game and some good offensive instincts in finding the good scoring areas, registering five shots in 15 minutes of icetime. Frattin would have notched his first NHL goal if not for a couple good saves from Carey Price.

Onto the mashup from Greg.

Quotables:

“The run that we went on after the all-star break was a really good building block for our team. Having such a young team and playing in such important games, I think it’s really going to help us next year. You could see how a lot of the guys matured.”

Last Night in Leafs Prospects:

Jesse Blacker went pointless with a plus-two rating in Owen Sound’s 3-2 win over the Plymouth Whalers to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Whalers forward Jamie Devane was a minus-one and failed to collect any points. Out west, Josh Nicolls of the Saskatoon Blades was also pointless in the opening game of their first round matchup with the Kootenay Ice.

Your Say:

What were your first impressions on Joe Colborne and Matt Frattin in their respective debuts? Heading into the off season what areas does Leaf management need to address either through free agency or via trade?

Ah but they can get around that by acquiring contracts like Komisarek’s where he has a cap hit of $4.5M but an actual salary of $3.5M in the last two years. That may be a way to get rid of Komisarek when the young D are ready for action.

drock-agreed. the west in general is such a tough conference. that said, Emery has played very well but you’re talking about a tender with less than 10 starts on the year. he’s proven hes a playoff tender but he has a very small body of work to this point. well said though that the parity in the conference will make for some really exciting series.

    @ wags31:
    .
I’m sorry. I was not intending to hurt anyone. And you’re right I should be careful what I say when I don’t know who is on the other end. Although I will defend myself by saying, we are all FREE to say what we want on here. But you’re absolutley right sometime’s we should just keep certain thought’s to ourselves, warranted or unwarrented. But it happen’s everyday on here, and I’m sure we all know to take it with a grain of salt. Again, I do apoligize. You should stand up for your family and friend’s. I certainly do and have no problem with you doing it.
    .
Although, for future reference calling Cam Barker the modern day Ray Bourque is what started it all. So maybe we can both be a little more grounded in the future.

Just like Don Hay and Craig Hartsburg. It’s not alway’s a silky smooth transition. Although to be fair to Deboer he never got a fair chance in Florida. His team’s were horrible. But I’m not sure he will get another chance, I’ve seen it happen so many times. You need a good start in this league or you sometime’s get buried forever.

Schenn said in an interview the other day it’s an honour to represent Hockey Canada and one he won’t pass up. Burke implores all his players to attend if his team doesn’t make the playoffs so Phaneuf will be expected to lead by example. Reimer would obviously relish the shot. So all would go I think, and I definitely think Phaneuf and Reimer will get the invites, probably Schenn too.
