MLHS Morning Mashup: Ending in Defeat

It was far from a satisfying send off but last night’s 4-1 loss to the Habs was in some ways a microcosm of 2010-11 season that was. With their powerplay quite literally working against them, the Leafs put themselves in a hole early, showed some fight back and ultimately fell short, while some promising youthful performances comprised a silver lining for a better tomorrow. That said, it seemed a good portion of the Leafs roster was still suffering from the hangover of a playoff run fallen short, the giveaways and breakaways against were plentiful and the effort generally uninspired.

It’s important to keep one game in perspective but debutants Frattin and Colborne gave Leafs fans a pretty good feel for what the future may hold last night. Colborne’s frame will need some further filling out but he looked like an unrefined model of that big-bodied skilled center fans have been yearning for since Mats Sundin’s departure. Matt Frattin showed no hesitation in getting right in the mix with a high-tempo game and some good offensive instincts in finding the good scoring areas, registering five shots in 15 minutes of icetime. Frattin would have notched his first NHL goal if not for a couple good saves from Carey Price.

Onto the mashup from Greg.

Quotables:

“The run that we went on after the all-star break was a really good building block for our team. Having such a young team and playing in such important games, I think it’s really going to help us next year. You could see how a lot of the guys matured.”

Last Night in Leafs Prospects:

Jesse Blacker went pointless with a plus-two rating in Owen Sound’s 3-2 win over the Plymouth Whalers to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Whalers forward Jamie Devane was a minus-one and failed to collect any points. Out west, Josh Nicolls of the Saskatoon Blades was also pointless in the opening game of their first round matchup with the Kootenay Ice.

Your Say:

What were your first impressions on Joe Colborne and Matt Frattin in their respective debuts? Heading into the off season what areas does Leaf management need to address either through free agency or via trade?

Yep, the hockey IQ on the bloggers here is bar none. I like PPP for what it is but I feel they are more “rely on the stats” and “talk too much about media personalities we don’t like.”

The MLHS blogging team could do a astronomically better job than the HNIC broadcasting crew last night.

Why do I get a horrible, horrible feeling that’s not going to happen. Montreal has alway’s had Tim Thomas’ number except for the last game.

Well the seasons over and there’s a lot of positives. The most positive I’ve seen is goaltending and the acquistiation of Lupol. I look to James Riemer to land the starting job this fall with Gustavvson backing up. I think the Monster will spend the summer rehabilitating and rebuilding. I was mildly surprised he wasn’t given the final game but Reimer deserved it with the way he played all year.

Look for Burke to gut the team again – forward wise – we STILL do not have enough size up front and that is glaring problem. We lose too many puck battles and too many turn overs due to softness at times.

These are the players I suspect will be moved.

Grabovski – I liked the little firecracker but his size is a deterrent at times. It is like having Phil Kessel for two straight shifts – one of Kessel is enough.
-solution – trade to move up the draft to get a sizable prospect and free up money ( 3 to 2.5 million)

Boazk – has speed and appears to have size – problem is I don’t see him using his size thus he is rather soft.
-solution – trade to a budget minded team that might want to unload a pricey veteran forward – a healthy young one.

-Komisarek – IF Fingers contract is over this year, Komisarek could be demoted to the minors but Burke should listen to offers for him.

Lebda – trade for a 3rd rounder. Just dump him somewhere.

Coaching staff – bring in a powerplay specialist. Loyalties could cause Wilson to balk and walk way if he doesn’t get what he wants – keeping his core staff?

Also $62 million is what we were spending the year before the lockout. We did get up to 65 the season before, but that’s insane.

    @ dawriter67:
I think the PP solution is ALMOST as simple as finding a really good net presence guy. I don’t understand why we didn’t try Armstrong in that role more this season, he seems quite able to take a licking, lol, unfortunately he also got injured frequently.

Kadri, Colborne, Gardiner, Blacker, and Frattin may be ready at the start of next year, but I can see there being value in letting them play some time in the AHL to start the year. It is a decision that should be made in camp, but I would not mind seeing these guys build up their confidence at the AHL level before coming up here. Aulie, and Reimer are good examples of this. Players well seasoned in the minors are less likely to suffer a sophmore slump.
By mid season I expect some of these guys would be steady and ready.

Kadri will start the season with the team and sould in my mind. I know it’s just one game but it’s hard not to get excited about Frattin, at 23 he may be more ready than other prospect’s and will challenge for a spot.

    @ moimoi28:
I thought Frattin looked great too. It will sort itself out in camp.
I have a concern with Kadri, well not really with him, the concern is making sure we have enough size in our group of forwards. I am worried with Kessel, Grabovski, and Kadri all playing big roles on this team. That group is too small. Grabovski handles himself well but Kessel and Kadri still need more strength. Kadri will is getting closer though.

Well, it was always expected to be 61.5 next year, so it’s not a huge increase on what I calculated for the Rangers. So much depends on how they handle Drury, and what happens with Sather. If he’s really stepping down, that’s huge for us.

Going into next season we must have:
    1) more size in our forwards
    2) no passengers (ie. Lebda, Wallin types)
    3) a functional PP

    @ B Leaf:

I think you address that by surrounding them with bigger guys. Size won’t matter if Kessel has Richards and Lupul with him. Kadri playing with say Brooks Laich and Colby Armstrong would eliminate size concerns. Everyone gets so worked up about size, but there aren’t many teams that have a group of 9 giants. The Leafs are not small by any means.

i feel like a lot of people dont understand how much of an agitator kadri really is, put him on a line with armstrong and the other team is gonna be pissed, thats what i love about kadri, hes an asshole and once he grows a little bigger and more confident we will see it a lot more, i know this is a bad comparison but to me hes like a little corey perr, softest hands and pisses people the fuck off
