Morning Mashup: Round Two Begins

The second round of the playoffs got off to a relatively quiet start, with only one game on the docket. Although it’s far too early to determine whether the second round will be as exciting in the first, it is unlikely than anything can top the level of excitement that was on display night in and night out through the opening round.

What we as fans should come to expect from the second round is a hard hitting, tight checking, defensive style. As evidenced from last night’s game between Nashville and Vancouver, the battle between Pekka Rinne and Roberto Luongo highlighted what was otherwise a relatively uneventful contest.

Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals host division rival Tampa Bay Lightning at the Verizon Center tonight. It will be interesting to see how the Capitals defense reacts to the Lightning attack, led by Hart Trophy nominee Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos. The Caps only had to limit Marian Gaborik, who struggled for the Rangers, and Brandon Dubinsky. It will be up to Mike Green to step up as a leader on the backend and perform when it matters most.

Game 1 of the OHL finals gets underway on Tuesday night as the top-seed Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors welcome Jesse Blacker and the Owen Sound Attack to town. The winner of the best-of-seven series is guaranteed a berth in the Memorial Cup in May.

Your Say:

How will the second round unfold? Do the Canucks have what it takes to go all the way to the finals or have they not played as well as their seeding indicates?

Burton, I was not attacking you. It is an interesting theory, I just wanted to make my own opinion known in contrast. The point is, even if the Avs want Schenn, they won’t get him. I think for Burke it was Tavares or bust on that front.

    @ Burtonboy:
Remember, Schenn is due for a big raise too. at 5+million, is Shenner that much of a bargain for a team like the Avs.

    @ Rick Lanz:
Probably not. But I’m not saying trade Schenn anyway. I’m saying they will be looking for significant return on Stastney . Likely a Schenn type player. Bad exmple on my part because this board goes nuts when you mention his name.

Funny, my perspective is the opposite. If I’m a GM, why would I want to take on 6.6 million dollars worth of someone elses crap? In an ideal world, the Avs would move Stastny for high quality but cheap players, picks and prospects, and then decide how to spend the extra money in their own way. Most GMs are going to peddle crap on them if they want to go dollar for dollar, don’t you think? Rolston + crap + something good kinda offers.

Do you think he’ll sign for more or less? His agent will probably use Komi’s contract and argue that he’s worth double….

My point is having more options is always better no matter what option you finally select, thats kind of negotiating 101.

Agents can’t use UFA contracts to sign RFA contracts. Consider that Getzlaf and Perry were PPG players who won a Cup, and got signed to 5 million dollar deals. Marc Staal has achieved more than Schenn also, and only makes 3.9 million. Thankfully, the RFA market has come way down for second contracts, and I think most people will be shocked by Schenn’s affordibility. But certainly, Komisarek’s contracts has no effect whatsoever on the Schenn’s negotiations.
