Morning Mashup: Round Two Begins

The second round of the playoffs got off to a relatively quiet start, with only one game on the docket. Although it’s far too early to determine whether the second round will be as exciting in the first, it is unlikely than anything can top the level of excitement that was on display night in and night out through the opening round.

What we as fans should come to expect from the second round is a hard hitting, tight checking, defensive style. As evidenced from last night’s game between Nashville and Vancouver, the battle between Pekka Rinne and Roberto Luongo highlighted what was otherwise a relatively uneventful contest.

Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals host division rival Tampa Bay Lightning at the Verizon Center tonight. It will be interesting to see how the Capitals defense reacts to the Lightning attack, led by Hart Trophy nominee Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos. The Caps only had to limit Marian Gaborik, who struggled for the Rangers, and Brandon Dubinsky. It will be up to Mike Green to step up as a leader on the backend and perform when it matters most.

Game 1 of the OHL finals gets underway on Tuesday night as the top-seed Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors welcome Jesse Blacker and the Owen Sound Attack to town. The winner of the best-of-seven series is guaranteed a berth in the Memorial Cup in May.

Your Say:

How will the second round unfold? Do the Canucks have what it takes to go all the way to the finals or have they not played as well as their seeding indicates?

@ 2 Minutes for Looking so Guru:
I believe that Colorado will be more than happy to get rid of 6.6 million in salary. Avalance is going to stink for a couple of years, and they will do an Oiler move. Take 3-4 years to load talent on board with a lot of draft picks.
It would be much better for them to have 3-4 players at 1.5-2.5 million per year on short contracts, that they can peddle for picks at the deadline. Therefore sending Stastny away is too good a solution not to take.

Nope we are definitely not doomed lol. I got a feeling the price for Stastney is going to be too high for many on this board. It’s same with all devoted fans . We overvalue our own players and under value the other teams. Burke has made a couple of big steals this year and last but that sure as hell not going to happen with every trade. We will see if Burke does make a move for him but if he does don’t be surprised when you see what it’s going to cost.

    @ Great Dane:
They would be smarter to deal him at the deadline though. GM’s the on trade deadline eve would have visions of Stastny ice dancing in their heads. They could really rape a team for some good picks and prospects then. Especially since his 6.6M would be alot easier for a team to take late in the year.

You guys are missing my point it seems like. I’m not saying we trade Schenner. I’m just speculating what its going to cost to get Stastney. I very much doubt Burke would even remotely consider something like. But Colorado are going to ask for a big return. I doubt we will be in the game to be honest because someone will give more then we would be willing too.

Burtonboy, Imagine what non-Leaf fans would say Grabovski was worth if he had put 57 points and was being paid almost 7 million dollars. Yes, Stastny has put up some fantastic numbers, but value is not determined by numbers, but rather by what people are willing to pay. The best info we have on the situation is Bob McKenzie saying that there is little to no interest in Stastny – that is a stunning comment for him to make. Compare this to the initial speculation about Phaneuf’s availibility, and Richards’ in Tampa when he was moved. Both of these guys were moved for similar reasons, and rumors of them being available seemed to spark mass interest. Neither returned so much as a quality prospect, let alone a blue chip defender like Luke Schenn.
    -
If Stastny is available, it is because THEY want to move him and his gargantuan salary. Like with Richards and Phaneuf before him, who had their position usurped by younger or more expensive players (Duchene for Stastny, Bouwmeester for Phaneuf, Lecavalier for Richards), the return will be enormously effected by this part of the equation. If there is little to no interest in the player and his contract around the league, why in the world would Burke give up what is potentially his most valuable asset? If there is any mention of Luke Schenn, Burke hangs up the phone, and laughs heartily at the foolishness of Avs management to make such a request. Teams like Buffalo and Nashville (and even Anaheim under Burke’s reign) prove that you don’t need expensive stars at center – just quality depth.

I saw somewhere that Stastny was 22nd in salary and 54th in points among forwards. It is always a good idea to buy then prices are low. Stastny, I agree, do not have a lot of value right now.

The money doesn’t necessarily have to come from the trading team. Maybe they get Bozak back in part of a package, and then sign Bryzgalov to sell to the fans. I think they’re going to try and go all in to get a big goalie in free agency, and if they are successful will then move Stastny out to even up the salary situation.

Look I certainly hope you guys are right and I will be the first to admit I’m wrong if indeed he is traded for the types of deals you guys are talking about. Again I reiterate I’m not saying we trade Schenner but I am saying the cost of acquiring Stastney will be significant. I simply used Schenn as an example because I think its that type of return they will want and I’m asking are we willing to pay a price like that. Fuck me why are people to read things into this that I’m simply not saying
