Putting a number on Schenn

While the rest of the folks in Leafs Nation go on pulling their hair out trying to figure out how the team will land another offensive forward, there’s probably a bigger item on Brian Burke’s to-do list: negotiating Luke Schenn’s new contract.

It’s inevitable that this deal will get done, but much like the dealings with Nik Kulemin last summer, the price is still up in the air. Putting a cap on a player’s value is tough, and even more so when it’s a young player with barrels of potential like Schenn. But Jon S of Puckineh.com has done just that, and he’s done a pretty good job;

Ryan Suter’s contract of $3.5 million a season is the contract of a team’s number two defenseman, and player that can be counted on in all situations. Presently this is not Luke Schenn, though it could very well be as soon as next season.

It’s hard to disagree with this statement. Schenn could well be on his way to becoming a defenseman that logs more powerplay time and develops a minor offensive role from the blue line. Currently he isn’t there, but he’s showing strides to getting there, and you have to wonder how much that will play into his contract negotiations.

Burke shouldn’t pay based on potential, and if he isn’t going to, he’ll have to keep things short-term. Luckily, it’s something he’s good at.

When the St. Louis Blues signed Erik Johnson to a two year $2.6 million per season deal they did the right thing (in my opinion) and gave Johnson a deal based on the level he was currently at, and gave him a shorter term so he wasn’t locked in for too long on a bargain contract

This is essentially the deal you want to see for Schenn if you’re a Leafs fan. Based on the uncertainty of the next collective bargaining agreement (which Jon goes on to mention), it may not be smart to give him a lengthy contract at this point. And really, can you see Burke doing that anyway? I can’t.

The flipside to this, however, is that if Burke won’t commit long term to a player like Schenn, it’s nearly impossible to envision him throwing any major number of years at a player like Brad Richards. Then again, Richards and “potential” don’t land in the same sentence anymore, so it’s uncertain what type of attitude Burke will have in those types of dealings.

I figured the high end of a Schenn signing could be up in the area of just under 4 million, considering the sheer amount of minutes he can eat up.

As such a deal like Marc Staal’s that sees him paid $3,975,000 a season for 25 minutes of shutdown service is too steep, as Schenn is not yet a (marginal) All-Star or playing top pairing minutes.

It’s simply too much at this point. As much as I wouldn’t cry about a big pay day for Schenn due to my extreme Leafs bias, I really can’t see him landing upwards of 3.3-3.5 million. So if I have to throw an estimate out there right now, I believe Schenn will rake in about 3.1 million per, over three years.

It’ll be an interesting summer for Leafs fans, and a lot of the buzz will be created around returning players who will need new contracts like Gunnarsson, Bozak and MacArthur. And of course, the most important of all will obviously be Schenn, but will Burke pull something else that’s even bigger?

    Does anybody know for sure whether Schenn has 3 or 4 more season until he’s an UFA??
    If it’s 3 years, then I can see him getting either a 2 year contract, so he can be resigned as a RFA once the deal in done or maybe a 4 or 5 year deal so a year or two of his UFA time is bought.
    .
    If he’s a UFA in 4 years, then it’ll be either a 3 or 5 year deal.

    Yea, little different story. Bryzgalov was established, won a Cup, and still holds a playoff record for shutout streaks. I didn’t mean to bash Grabner, just the term of the contract. Good player, but I don’t think he’s done enough just yet to get a 5 year deal. I hope it works out for the Islanders though. You wouldn’t see the GM of a good team do that kind of deal though…

    @drock24

    By giving Grabner a long term contract like this, Snow has no choice now but to give his other young talented players similar contracts. That’s not good for business… Especially when the player (Grabner) hasn’t proven himself yet. Imagine if Kulemin was on that team and his agent demanded a 3.5Mill contract last year. Snow would not be able to say no.
    -
    And the only reason why I did bring up the Waiver PickUp is because this is a yet another poor attempt for the NYI’s to sell tickets. How can any GM sit there and say, “Sorry fans, I didn’t want to put money into bringing in top end talent, but i’m signing players that have come to try out at training camp and off of waivers.”
    -
    This is not good business and it shows not only by the team’s performance on the ice, but in the stands as well, since their is hardly any fans watching.

    @ Kostas:
    I disagree completely. First off Kulemin did not score 30 goals the previous season and it wasn’t the best year statistically. This season he took off but that is irrelevant.
    Secondly, the Isles WANT their young players to want long term contracts like that. They have trouble attracting talent and keeping talent, so it makes sense for them to lock up a young core right now.
    Thirdly Grabner was a pretty highly regarded prospect, its not like he’s some bum that got put on waivers. They were the first if not one of the first teams that could grab him and they did. Many other teams would have grabbed him on waivers if they had the chance.
    They have the cap room right now, so why not spend it on a young player that scored 30 goals for them. Why would it look bad to the fans to show commitment to a player like that? I’m sure many Isles fans are super excited about Grabner as he is still young, and a very exciting player.
    As I said before, this is only a good thing for other players on that team. Hey Grabner got a nice contract and is here long term, why don’t I re-sign as well now that I know there’s some stability on this team.
    I believe they resigned Okposo not too long ago and Bailey, and they will keep resigning the valuable young pieces of their core. These are all moves that will keep a guy like Tavares around for them. Signs of stability more than anything.
    Plus its 3 million for 5 years, its not an astronomical number, and if the guy pots 20 a year he is worth it. If he pots more then he is a bargain. Even if his contract seems like a bit of a gamble, it does make sense.

    @Reether

    Grabner was a highly regarded prospect… 6 years ago. Let’s not sit here and say just any team would have picked him up. Vancouver drafted him, 4 years later was traded to Florida. He couldn’t crack the lineup and was placed on waivers. This kid had his chances but his poor defensive play and laziness without the puck is what got him put on waivers. Now maybe that was what helped get him back on track… and if so, that’s awesome.
    -
    Kulemin might not of scored 30 goals, but his overall play was outstanding and could have gotten what his agent was asking for had he been an Islander and had this (Grabner) contract occurred prior to his contract negotiations. How could Snow say otherwise?
    -
    This looks bad on upper management because they refuse to spend money on high end talent to play with Tavaras but hand out long term contracts to unproven players. Look at Jonathan Cheechoo… the man had a solid year and a couple okay years after that. Now where is he? Had Snow given him a contract based on that 53 goal season, he would be looking at at least 6Mill a year for 5 years type of contract. The next year Cheechoo had 37, than 23 than completely fell off the map.
    -
    Like I said earlier… Yes, the Islanders have cap space… It’s the principle.
