Morning Mashup: Vancouver Blitzkrieg

Conference Finals typically mean a rise in intensity of play of all the teams that are still playing hockey mid May. Teams, coaches and players feel like they are coming closer to the Grail and it’s visible in every puck battle, shot and save. Yesterday night was no different as we witnessed a very close, hard fought battle between the San Jose Sharks and the Vancouver Canucks.

San Jose played a solid road game until the third period, when Vancouver’s speed just took over. Once again, Roberto Luongo didn’t look like a 5 million plus goalie. His mishandling of a pass led to one Sharks goal and his flair for embellishing things was once again there for all to see. I fail to see why a top goalie (not elite, but top) has to act in a way that not only humiliates him, but his team and the game of hockey as well. That third period showed what the Canucks are capable of when in full flight (and with a somewhat recuperated Henrik), but the game also showed what SJ could do relying solely on their goaltender who almost single handedly stole the win. Now, if they can raise their level of play to match the kind of hockey they played against Detroit (better PK, less breakdowns in the D zone, crease crashing) I can see them winning the series.

I mentioned this in one of my previous mashups, but it needs to be said yet again – San Jose’s story of the playoffs so far has to be the play of Joe Thornton. A guy who adapted his game to better suit the grueling playoff run has 13 points in the last 12 games he has played during the Sharks’ playoff run. Actually, since the 2008-09 season, his average points-per-game in the playoffs has been around 0.85, and during his time with the Sharks he has only had one season where his playoff points-per-game was lower than 0.80. Come to think of it, many great players were considered losers until they actually started winning, although I always thought that label was harshly put on his back. It is true that for a Hart and Art Ross winner, a first team All Star he had surprisingly few team honors, but Thornton is only 31 and in his prime. He has a good number of playing years left and it is expected he will spend most of them playing on a loaded SJ team. Considering the new and improved Sharks this year (which I expect will translate into future seasons – you don’t mature for one year) and Thornton’s level of play for most of this regular season and the playoffs, it’s getting pretty hard to call Joe a loser, especially with that Olympic gold hanging around his neck.

The “other” story surrounding the Sharks  is Antti Niemi. For this writer, nothing comes close to a goalie who you know is going to stop what he needs to stop in the playoffs, and then some. When that kind of goalie comes with a 2 million dollar price tag (3.8 next year) and a Stanley Cup winning pedigree, well, Doug Wilson can be pretty happy with his offseason acquisition.

In other news, Finland captured the World Hockey Championship gold medal in Slovakia. The Finns humiliated their arch rivals with a spectacular third period which led to a 6-1 win and were finally rewarded with the tournament’s top prize after playing the most esthetically pleasing hockey for many years in numerous competitions and coming up just short. One such example came in 2006 Winter Olympic final where they lost the gold medal to Sweden. They say revenge is sweet.

    @ 4evrblue:
If i knew we were moving other d out like Gunner for instance I would take a shot at him. Lebad is gone for sure or at least I fuckin hope so and I’m not sure if Lasshoff is in the plans. If Burke is looking for d I suspect he will go for Joni Pitkanen . It all depends on the price and if its too high then yes he may go for Babchuk depending on what else happens with the d corp.

I don’t think Burke will do anything with the d. I think he’ll ride lashoff and lebda.

Can’t see Finger getting the nod over Lebda. Better player, yes, but he’s a Fletcher signing making 3.5, and Lebda is a Burke signing. We know his player loyalty, so.. And Lashoff didn’t look bad out there at all in his limited time. I can see him penciled in for that 5 – 6 spot with Komisarek, who SHOULD be a 3 – 4 guy (plays better with more minutes but won’t get those minutes) and Lebda as the 7th. Holzer and Gardiner are the most likley call ups. Maybe Mikus even.

I agree, but I bet Lebda starts the year on the big club over Mikus, Gardiner, Holzer, and Gyspers. It doesn’t matter how well they do it will be another John Mitchell situation.

    @ Gilbert:
I feel Burkie is going to make a statement. If he can’t get the #1C then I believe he will do something with the D. He isn’t going to waste the cap room if there is a key building block to be had.

Lebda will be the 7th again, and he’ll be much better this season than last. Lets just hope Burke can find a replacement for Kabs to keep Lebda as 7th and not 6th.
    .
Oh and all this talk of league contraction…don’t forget about the NHLPA…there’s no way they sit by and watch as 20% of their jobs are taken away.

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but CSNPhilly is reporting that the Flyers are going to make a push for Bryzgalov. I know common sense has had the hockey world suspecting it for weeks, but this makes it that much more official, me thinks. Though I’m still not on the Carter love-in, and don’t for a minite believe they’d let go of Richards, I’d gladly make room for Leino on my bottom 6. Correct me if I’m wrong, but is he not an RFA that they may not be able to keep? Or, knowing Philly, they will sign all their RFA’s and UFA’s, then sign Bryz and sort out there cap mess later..

Leino is actually UFA, I would love for them to sign Bryz, would be interesting to see how they sort it all out.

On Leino, I cant remember which Flyer said it but I think it was Briere who called him the most natural playmaker he ever played with. Just spitballing here but do you guys think this lineup would work well?
    .
    Leino Laich Kessel
    Kule Grabs Mac
    Lupul Bozak Army
    Brown Brent Rosy/Orr/Boyce
    .
There wouldn’t be a legitimate 1st line, more like 3 2nd lines but I wouldn’t be afraid to put any of those out against the top players on the other team.

I think lupul is more suited to play with laich and Kessel, Leino would be sick playing with grabs and Kulie line. Or even the bozie army line

    @ 4evrblue:
Like that lineup quite a bit! Especially the thought of adding Leino. The only issue is have is that although it sounds crazy because we only got a small sample size, I would love to see frattin on the third line. For some reason I think we got the real deal in him. I know we only got to see one game but man did he ever get a lot of great chances that game.
Let him warm up to the professional level and I think he will be the real deal. I like the way he plays. With injuries and such maybe for this year it is better off just to have him on the marlies and as a call up, but I feel like he will be ready soon.
And also, I think kadri might be ready. Not to centre a line, but to play wing. The kid has shown he is pretty much point per game in the ahl. I think they gotta let him find his groove in the NHL. I think once the ball gets rolling for this kid, the rest will be history.
Anyways I do like your lineup, I would be happy with it, but it would be nice to see a couple young guys really step it up this year.
I may be in the minority, but I do not feel entirely stressed to get the number 1 centre. I would be so fired up if we somehow landed one, but we have waited so long now for some playoff hockey, that I think I have a little patience left in the tank to let some guys develop into their bigger, projected roles. Besides the last half of this past season we were competitive enough to make the playoffs. If we can be more consistent, maybe having the young guns step it up is all we will need.
Anywways just some of my thoughts. Sorry its a long one but I haven’t posted in a while. Also posted from my smart phone so I don’t even know if this makes sense hah! Go leafs go!i
