A few tidbits of Leafs news are surfacing as Burke and his colleagues begin team operations again in the coming days. First off, the team has signed prospect Kenny Ryan to a three year entry level contract.

From the mapleleafs.com release:

Ryan, 19, was originally the Maple Leafs’ second choice, selected 50th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-0, 210-pound right-winger played the past two seasons for the Ontario Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfires. In 2010-11, he collected 58 points on 21 goals and 37 assists with 42 penalty minutes in 60 games played. He ranked second on the team with a (+16) rating. In 18 playoff games with Windsor, the native of Franklin Village, Michigan registered four goals and eight assists for 12 points along with 25 minutes in penalties.

And in some other interesting news, Brian Burke had this to say at the Memorial Cup game the other night, regarding his plan to move 2 of his top three picks in order to solidify a higher spot in the draft;

Burke also had a few things to say regarding where the team is in terms of trades, and looking ahead to the July 1st free agency period. From Ken Beckett of Hockeybuzz.com:

“It’d be better to do it on July 1st because you get the player for free. All it costs you is salary. You don’t give up any assets, you don’t give up any players or picks. Prior to July 1st, you’ve got to pledge assets.”

“While you can get the guy on July 1st for free, the flip side is he may not be there. He may not even get there and he may not pick your team. There could be six teams all trying to put something together. We are exploring adding a player via the trade route, but if that’s not successful, then we’ll see what’s there July 1st.”

It seems as though our constant search for Leafs news is finally starting to turn up some results. Things should start to snowball from here, at least with any luck.

    story about a OJHL player while I was there. Curtis Leonard, the anchor of the Wellington Dukes defense has had two interviews with the Leafs already and is meeting with the Leafs for a third time at the ACC in the next week or so. Leonard is a late developer, but a horse on defense. He will be attending RPI

    totally agree, its bullshit if a team refuses to sign a player and yet gets rewarded.

    in my eyes burke should be targeting brad richards first and foremost… the guy is a left handed shot with a wicked pass and kessel shoots right… hes a cup winner and an mvp winner in the playoffs.. he may be old in hockey terms at 31 but but our oldest player is komi who is currently 29.. soon to be 30… richards can slot into the 2nd hole when our picks are ready to… the leadership is needed for the team as a whole and our centers… they could learn a shit load from him… theoretically if.. we do get richards and get the guy we want in the dratft.. burke needs to go big or go home and look at carter or parise… personally i want parise…. the kid works as hard as anyone in the leauge and has scored 40 before… burke has already expressed how much he likes him as a player… new jersey hasent even approached him for a contract yet… he must feel like a forgotten child….i know i would… if i was so important to them… anyways… if there a sniffs of him being avaliable… 2 firsts and 2 seconds… its a lot… but he is more proven than kessel and burke likes giving fair value… our depth is getting so big now with kids from 2009 about to step into the pro ranks.. its start to make big moves to compete.. if not…. look at carter….. but how would parise- richards- kessel look…? i really think it can happen boys…. new jersey must be thinking about rebuilding.. especially with their franchise goalie who will retire soon… and already trading langenbruenner…

    PS: i wouldnt be opposed to Bartschi, or Zibanejad with the high pick, or Puempel with the later one.

    Wondering about possible trade options for the Leafs this off-season? This is a pretty good article which has 10 possible options for them and they seem pretty reasonable and fair to me..
