Morning Mashup: Horton Proves Worth

When you’re plying your trade in a hockey market like Florida, it is quite hard to convince people that you’re a game breaking player. It’s a team that wins some, loses more and generally misses the postseason.

A clutch player? Forget it. After all, being clutch can only be proven in games that matter, and no offense to Panthers fans but they didn’t exactly play many of those since 2005-06.

In Florida, with a team that hadn’t made the playoffs since before you were drafted there, basking in the sunlight, it’s not hard for people to forget that you were, in fact, a REALLY high pick. 3rd overall in 2003 to be exact. It’s also much easier to completely ignore your 142 goals scored during your 5 seasons with the cats, not to mention his +32 total for those five seasons. There really should be a piece of text about Stephen Weiss around here somewhere…

So, if you’re Nathan Horton, you probably wanted a chance to compete. Hell, if you were a hockey player you want a chance to compete. He got one with Boston and is currently making Peter Chiarelli looking like a really smart man, Kaberle move aside. Horton has won 3 games for Boston during these playoffs. More like three huge games. He has 3 points in his last two games and is almost a point-per-game player in the postseason (all with the Bruins).

Personally, I love Nathan as a hockey player. Actually, when I envision a hockey player, I’m thinking of a guy just like him. He’s a pure goalscorer with size and strength who can fight and has a mean streak. Apparently, he’s willing to compete and is a winner as well. Palm trees and deadly cats, who would have thought it? If he was a member of the Leafs, well, I’d worship the ice he skated on, but let’s not go there. There are a good number of things I disagree with when it comes to Grapes, but Horton is not one of them. “He’s a hockey players’ hockey player.”

The Bolts vs. Bruins game was something we thought would characterize the series as a whole. A solid defensive game played with lots of intensity, coupled by stellar goaltending. Your typical game 7 if you will. In the end, a veteran wearing black and yellow bested one wearing the bolt. Roloson put on a show, not only during this game but throughout the playoffs, and you’ve got to feel bad for they way things turned out for him. Not for the Leafs though, because that conditional pick landed right where we wanted it to.

In 2006, Roloson led the Edmonton Oilers to the Cup finals only to get injured and miss it. Yesterday, he lost a game 7 of the Conference Finals by one shot, while giving up just one goal in the process. Tim Thomas raised his arms, shaking them towards the sky after the final horn – after a sensational, record braking season, the 37 year old happy go lucky goaltender is finally getting his chance to play for the Cup, to any fan out there, Bruin or otherwise inclined, Thomas’ story has to be a good one to tell.

YOUR SAY

When looking at Horton’s performance for Boston so far, do you think Stephen Weiss could manage something similar if he found his way to Toronto? Who are your favorite players not playing on the Leafs? Who will prevail in the Stanley Cup Finals?

I certainly can’t argue with what you’ve said about Horton. Though I will admit to being slightly surprised. Perhaps he was losing his desire in FLA, beause he looks, IMO, like twice the player he was in the past. Good on him, and a good move by Chiarelli. Congrats to the Bruins, and a heartfelt sadness for the Bolts. Not sure how much longer Rolly has left, though he shows no signs of slowing down.. I’d like to say TB has a great base to move forward with, but a las, I think they were more like a cinderella team than a legit contender, especially given the number of aging vets. Not sure they’ll get that close again for years..

    @ the Surreal McCoy:

You’re right about Tampa, and probably about Horton too. I mean, it’s difficult to want to play in a losing market all the time. The drive is back when you actually have something to play for except your own stats.

Horton still doesn’t impress me and I’m still glad he’s not a Leaf. I have noticed him for a Grand Total of less than 2 minutes in the entire playoffs. Seriously. Good for the kid going to the net to get those 3 big goals, but holy shit balls thank his linemates for doing all the work, not him.
For all his size and skill he’s more of a peripheral player than Kessel. I think he’s still learning how to compete to be honest, and I think when Grapes pumps him up it’s to do just that: pump him up, to give him some confidence to get going.
If Horton was a Leaf I think he’d frustrate the shit out of us all, because when he does score we’d be asking “why the hell doesn’t he show up and do that more often”.
He’s no hockey player’s hockey player to me. He’s more of a Johnny on the Spot.

Morning Mislav. Good write up as usual. Horton has been a bit for me in these playoffs. Sometimes all that’s need is a change of scenery. Goodbye palm trees ,hello snow has the effect of refocusing an individual I would say. Playing in hockey mad Boston rather the weak anemic market of Miami probably has something to do with it also. He played well IMO
    -
As for Weiss you may well be right. I could see him stepping up his game considerably coming to a city like Toronto. However he really isn’t what we need. Weiss is at best a second line center and we already have one. Plus Tallon made it very clear at the deadline if he were to trade Weiss he would want at the very least another center in return. Rumors had it he would want Kadri from TO so that’s a no go.
    -
I read with considerable interest the link from Hockey Analysis. Little doubt Brad Richards would be the best fit. His point about defensive liabilities and cost are well taken and definitely a concern but at some point you have be willing to take a chance.
    -
Of all the others he mentioned Stastny and Carter are the most interesting but at what cost in assets, that’s the $64 question. Can Burke strike a deal with either of these teams with out running the risk of losing several blue chip prospects. I doubt he can. We will see what Burke can do .

P.S. I was sort of pulling for Tampa as well, because frankly there’s no one on that team that pisses me off to know end that I can think of. We get BOS 2nd round pick now. Kaberle makes it to a final. BOS has a better chance of beating VAN than Tampa did IMO. So as shitty as this whole thing is that’s all the silver lining I can come up with to make it better.

    @ Burtonboy:
not sure how much i like Weiss, but he’d certainly make us a better team (i know but at what expense).
i don’t know that a top centre is as critical as simply getting a better centre. Kessel could double his assists playing with a centre who can finish, and plus-minus would improve instantly as a result.
Nash makes his centre a top line centre. Jagr was a winger with the same effect. these types of guys would obviously be better off with star centres, but all they really need is competant centres. young Tavares is going to be the guy who makes his top line a top line. Kessel is going to be our guy that makes our top line go.
Weiss might be a good fit. i don’t know though because i just don’t see alot of him in FLA

I really don’t think Horton has been nearly as impressive as he’s been made out to be. From a point per game standpoint, this was actually one of Horton’s worst seasons. He disappeared for long stretches in the regular season, and he has continued that trend in the playoffs. He scores some key goals and all is forgiven, but I just feel like that kind of forgiveness would NEVER be granted to a Leaf player. It’s like Don Cherry said when he picked Horton to score the goals in the Montreal series, “Well yea but he did nothing all series”.

Weiss has played with players who can finish for years now. Lupul and Kessel are not going to be a substantial upgrade on Booth and Horton. I don’t buy this line of thought at all. Horton didn’t improve in Boston, and I don’t believe Weiss would improve in Toronto.

    @ dlb:
Not saying he wouldn’t improve our team. Its just that he would cost a lot to get and wouldn’t be good value for what we would have to pay. This summer is going to be a turning point for Wilson and Burke. They have to fill that hole to push us over the top because IMO MLSE and potential new ownership will not be very happy to go another year without making the playoffs.

    @ Burtonboy:
i’m not sure what i’d give up for a player wlike Weiss, so i think we agree mostly.
i do, however, believe that Burke has a good knack of keeping the prospects that actually do turn out to make an impact and he seems very capable of appearing to over pay for players when in fact he’s simply sold the other team a lot of promising players that don’t necessarily pan out. i could be wrong, and that was an aweful description haha.
what i mean is, if Burke trades for Weiss i think the players we’d give up wouldn’t be missed as much as we’d benefit from Weiss coming here. i think BB is good at projecting his prospects’ ultimate worth.

    @ dlb:
Tallon would want too much so its a moot point I guess. Weiss isn’t what we need anyway. Burke has no choice but buy, steal or trade for the right player or his tenure in Toronto my come to a screeching halt. Not because what Burke is doing is wrong and he should be given ample time to fix what was a fuckin big mess.. I just don’t think he will get that chance. Our history as an organization is ample proof of that. I just hope he doesn’t fall into the same trap as so many others and bow to the pressure. Short term gain for long term pain has gone on long enough.

I like Weiss but I dont think he is true #1 Centre on a competitive team. He is an improvement on Bozak for sure but is he any better than Grabowski. Ypu bring Weiss in ,who plays with who.

If you have to give up key prospects and picks ,go big or stay home.

As for Horton, I think I heard his name mentioned 3 or 4 times the whole this series.

    Went something like this—-Horton scooooooooores.

that’s why it makes sense to me. We’d simply have one more interchangeable top 6 players.

Burke wants the best player in the trade. he won’t give up any propect that will turn out better than Weiss.

yup. a hockey player’s hockey player…who’s name is called only 3 or 4 times in a series or playoff? not yet. maybe he breaks out in the finals and outdoes Kessler, then i’ll give him his due, but no sooner

Tough call isn’t it. Listening to Burke I think there is little doubt Richards is his preferred option but he sure quantified that in an interview this week . If he sees a deal that he can work with before FA I’m convinced he will pull the plug and not wait for Richards.
