Maple Leafs President and General Manager appeared on NHL Live yesterday to discuss a number of topics, including the Vancouver Canucks post season success, Colin Campbell stepping down as head of NHL discipline, and the Leafs` game plan heading into the off season. Here are some of the highlights from the interview:

- When asked about the Sedin twins, Burke elaborated on how difficult it was to secure the second and third overall picks in the 1998 Draft in order to take the twins. He spoke highly of the Sedins’ character, calling them ‘good kids who deserve all of the accolades they have gotten’.

- Burke praised Colin Campbell for his reign as the head of discipline for the NHL and thinks Brendan Shanahan is an excellent replacement who is cut-out for the position. He also mentioned that Campbell will be able to focus on growing the game now that he is primarily in charge of hockey operations.

- With regards to the Leafs, Burke emphasized that his players do not have to apologize for years of futility and are only accountable for their time in Toronto. He views the second half of the season as a true indication of how this team will play in the fall. More specifically, Burke emphasized the ‘size, speed and toughness of his current group’.

- Looking towards free agency, Burke gave the impression that he would look to improve his team through free agency, namely upgrading the Leafs down the middle. Although it has been speculated that the Leafs are interested in acquiring exclusive negotiating rights for Brad Richards prior to July 1st, Burke was unfamiliar with the NHL’s stance on swapping a player’s rights and enforced that the Leafs are not exploring that option.

- As expected, the blue and white will be active on the draft floor and in free agency in hopes of acquiring a front line centre and finding a veteran goaltender to back up James Reimer.

Can you guys imagine if Richards went to the Wings….god that would suck. Especially with them coming into the East next year…i pray we sign him, it’d be EXPONENTIAL for Kess and the top 9 let alone top 6. But wow, the thought if the Wings getting him gives me chills haha. I dont even hate the wings as i was a 90 born Leafs fan who didn’t witness their rivalry, but i would not be pumped about Winnipeg gettin a team after that..haha umm, we’ll take Atl back plzz, haha jp. But Datsyuk…Zetterberg…Richards…they’d have the deepest 3 in the league. Buh Bye Vancouver.

49.7% now. The worst thing about seeing him losing this is that the play is so much better than Cammalleris.

You guys think we really have any chance in these Richards sweepstakes? I’m getting the feeling this is going to deteriorate into a major bidding war. This guy is gonna get way overpaid .

    @ Jordan:
How much will we have to pay to get him here Jordan and does it even matter ? Richards has never played in a major hockey market especially one like Toronto. Hopefully he wants to come to Toronto because I think that will pay a major part in it. This guy is gonna get the money he wants regardless where he goes

If we can get Richards on a respectable deal it will be nothign short of a minor miracle. He has publically said that Toronto isnt his ideal playing location (im not saying he said he wont come, im just saying its not his idea situation), and he HAS said he would love ot play in New York. New York has the money, but we have more. I see that being the only way we can get this done.

5 years 40 mil. We have the cap space, and dont need to worry about anything else. People are out to lunch when they think Schenn, Macarthur and Bozak will make a lot. Then with him signed you just keep building around him with youth. We are so close IMO we have to get him.
    Richards @ 8 mil >>>>> Stastny @ 6.6 mil + assets lost

No he didnt, what planet have you been on? Only idiots looking for for website hits and stuff reported that.
Obviously he HAD to say he would love to play here because the camera was on him, but thats still what he said
Like seriously, this isnt the normal every summer “oh this guy to the Leafs ……blah blah blah”….. we have a HUGE chance at getting the exact guy we want/need/are missing. He literally couldnt be created any better for our situation.

I’m hopeful that we get him but not sure we will. It sounds like he doesn’t want to play in a big market, so if that’s true Toronto’s going to be last between Toronto NY and LA. He’s an older player, and while he has several good years left, he’s looking for his retirement contact, and will likely lean towards the team that has the best chance at a cup. We know Toronto’s got a good chance at it soon, but what’s the perception around the league?

    @ Jordan:
Don’t be suprised if other teams are in the mix as well. If a team wants him bad enough they’ll move other players to make cap room.
