To Laich Or Not To Laich?
Share

Would look good as a Leaf. His wallet would too.

The Leafs need a first line center. Misconception or truth? Watching this team throughout the season I’d say it’s need is right. But, if the golden goose in the form of Brad Richards lands in a city not named Toronto, how do we get that top end skill at center? Is there a free agent out there that could help this team without having that top end offensive skills?

Seemingly, Kessel always needed that first line center. I say seemingly because he preformed at his best playing with a legitimate No1 skilled passing center in Marc Savard. While that may be the case, what’s also undoubtedly true is that Kessel is still a developing player, even more so when playing in Boston. A sniper like Kessel does indeed need a more skilled center than Bozak but I think that skill is more likely to come from the draft or inside the organization (Kadri, Colborne) than via this year’s free agency. What I’m aiming for in this article is looking at a more balanced approach.

Brooks Laich is likely to be an available UFA as he’s likely to be unavailable and while I know that isn’t saying much, it’s also a motive for reasonable speculation. Laich is a top notch penalty killer, a player who can put up serious numbers when put in a top six role and play great defensively to boot. One way to look at a player like that is as a temporary fix and a permanent solution. Temporary in replacing elite skill on the top line and permanent as in a 27 year old versatile forward with experience that can play LW position. Looking at what Kesler means to Vancouver, it is clear that teams need players of Laich’s skillset to win Stanley Cups. Be it Jordan Staals or John Maddens of this world.

After a campaign that Kesler had, or rather, is having it would be unwise for anyone compare him to Brooks Laich. When looking at him from a purely defensive standpoint, he’s not that far behind. Also, when you compare their numbers during the two more recent campaigns (2007-2008, 2008-2009) they weren’t really that far apart until Vancouver became one of the best NHL teams. During that period Brooks Laich had 90 points in 164 regular season games played (44 goals). Kesler had 96 points in 162 regular season games played. Kesler was plus nine Laich -4 during that period but it is important to note that Vancouver had a better defensive team, a situation that hasn’t changed. Laich had 307 shots on goal, while Kesler fired off 356 pucks on the opposition netminders in the process.

What would Laich bring to this team? Well, first off better special teams. The powerplay would receive a somewhat solid boost, especially given the fact he can play the point on the first PP unit. The real gain would be visible the penalty kill. Next on the list – net presence. Standing at 6-2, Laich is a big body that doesn’t shy away from going to the net and getting those dirty goals, something we desperately needed and lacked this season. He can also create chances with good speed on the forecheck and can be even be used as a third line center.

All that in mind, Laich is still only the 8th highest scoring UFA forward. Not quite an eye popping rating. Furthermore, given the “strength” of UFA center class this year I’m sure if he does indeed opt for free agency, he’ll do so with an intention to sign a deal way more North of his current $2,066,667 deal with the Capitals. To be honest, I don’t think Laich is worth more than 4.5 mil. but signing him to a deal below that doesn’t seem very likely. Don’t get me wrong, I firmly believe it’s good, no scratch that, necessary for a team that has a legitimate first line center (one which you built a team around), to spend even more than the aforementioned sum of 4.5 mil. on a great two way center like Laich, but doing so could mean increasingly less wiggle room in the future for a franchise like Toronto, especially with that No1 line still lacking creativity after the signing. We’re still way off from being sure what Kadri or Colborne can bring at the center position. So, while doing term plus cap hit with a guy like Laich might offer better depth, defensive play and certainly improves us as a hockey team it really doesn’t solve a more pressing need.

My strong belief is, no matter who is currently out there or how tempting improving your team might seem, rebuilding teams, which IS what we still are, should look to solve the future cornerstones of the franchise before moving on to adding the secondary high priced, Stanley Cup contending pieces.

what i took from the article is richards is coming to toronto.

the author was saying they wont go over 6.5 per year. im pretty sure burke would give him 7, or 7.5.

red wings wont do it, because they need the money for a dman, and theres no point when you already have zetterberg and datsyuk. it would make more sense for them to go spend some coin on a winger.

i think its a done deal for richards to the leafs.

I guess if the article is true, NYR are just trying to get him for a discount due to Torts.
If that is the case, I think the only other competition would be the Kings. They were after Kovalchuk before NJD and want a big name player. So all really depends on where Richards wants to go. If it is money, we could probably stump up the most however it he does want a lower key market then LA (and his family may prefer it based on the sandals and tshirt quote).

Like I said, if Burke goes out and signs Laich and makes an “I think he’s capable of a 1st line center role” speech I am going to lose it. Not a fan of Laich at all really, maybe as a 3rd line center but not as a 1st liner.
    -
Fact is, Burke says he’s going to be very active on July 1st, and Richards SHOULD be available on July 1st, and the Leafs need a 1st line center. A lot of you guys here are saying “he’s not signing Richards he’s going to get Stastny or Carter instead”… well you have to make a trade to do that first and that requires giving up assets. I’d MUCH rather take the concussion chance on Richards (which I don’t think affected his game seeing that he played great when he came back), than give up a ton of assets on a younger guy.

I just hope we are not being used by Morris to simply squeeze more out of NY. The same thing happened with Holik if I remember correctly. Good thing that one turned out the way it did though.

LA doesnt make sense, they dont need a 2nd line centre. they need wingers.

you cant play bums beside a guy like richards. kings are better off going for someone like gagne.

i think the real front runners are toronto and new york. and from that article it looks like new york wont be the option.

If I’m Richards and want to be on a team coached by Tortorella I may try and anticipate the next team he will be coaching instead of the Rangers. Torts is near the average lifespan for an NHL coach with one team and if the Rangers underperform to expectations he could be the scapegoat. Then Richards could have a five-six year contract with a team no longer coached by Tortorella. I really wonder how much of a factor it will be with Richards to be with Tortorella, my guess is that money will trump that desire fairly quickly.

    @ Penthouse:
Believe it or not I think Tampa may be a bidder. He might be willing to take a discount to play there. The tax laws would make up the difference on any discount he would give them. It’s gonna get really interesting on July 1st.

    @burtonboy

this is possible, but they are going to have to move out salary one way or the other. You can’t drop 50% of your cap on the top6. Tampa needs a goalie, they need some D help, and if they somehow sign richards, their bottom 6 will suffer big time. i think tampa would have to do some serious juggling to make that happen.

    @ Penthouse:
I’m basing it on what he told the St Pete’s times this week so it open to interpretation for sure. He did say he never wanted to leave Tampa and if they made an offer on July 1st he would definitely look at it. How much is that simply Richards trying to say nice things to the reporter like he did here in Toronto last fall I don’t really know. Its hard to figure they would make an offer but ya never know. These tax laws in Florida give them a big advantage in acquiring FA’s for sure.

Everybody is all over Jordan for calling things like Burke not trading for Carter, but how can you really argue that? I would love Carter on the Leafs, but not for 11 years, and even if I COULD live with that, Burke won’t. If he’s going to take on an 11 year contract, he might as well offer sheet Stamkos an 11 year 7 mil deal before trading for Carter, and I think he would. Also, everybody keeps saying Burke would overlook his “rules” because Carter is such an ‘elite’ center in the league. The guy is a great player, and a natural goal scorer, but he’s far from elite. He’s averaged less than 70 points, and I understand that he’s on a deep team, but it’s not like he’s far and away made himself the number one guy in Philly. Second of all, he’s a goal scorer, not a point getter like we need. We don’t need two potential 50 goal scorers on a top line with nobody to feed them the puck, and Burke will see that….So I agree with Jordan 100%
