Leafs Inquired about Flames’ Erixon

I apologize for my lack of activity of late as I have been quite busy with academics, but that should change in the two weeks leading up to the draft. Anyways, passing on a bit of late night news: according to the Calgary Sun, the Maple Leafs were very much involved in the Tim Erixon sweepstakes before the talented young puck-mover was shipped to the Rangers in exchange for a pair of 2nd round selections. Erixon had reportedly refused to sign with the Flames due to concerns about not being guaranteed an NHL job come September. This bit of news may reveal some of the Maple Leafs’ motives heading into the offseason:

1) The team may not be satisfied with the current puck-moving ability on the back end. They had inquired about Colorado’s John Michael Liles at the deadline, but balked at the asking price. Look for the Leafs to seek an upgrade on last season’s 22nd ranked power play with an affordable offensive contributor.

2) Considering the consensus ho-hum nature of the 2011 draft and Burke‘s preference to compete sooner rather than later, the Leafs may choose to dangle draft picks in exchange for prospects that are two or three years ahead of the current draft class. Much like the Rangers have done with Erixon and the Senators with Runblad last year, the Leafs could market one of their 1st round selections if it lands them a player who’s a little more NHL ready.

    All Burke needs to do is sign Richards and he not only fills the #1 Centre need, but also takes care of the Powerplay Quarterback need at the same time!

    So, if I’m reading right, the Rags must have Erixson slotted into their blueline, which tells me that one of Del Zotto, Girardi or Gilroy sshould be hitting the market. Or Redden, lol. I’d take either MDZ or DG to play with Schenn. Pass on Gilroy though..

    To get Del Zotto for our young blueline, and strap their team with Cap issues. Richards is not going to win the Rangers the cup, plain and simple, and Del Zotto + Carter fit our mold perfectly going forward. NYR are not our concern, we are our concern, nothing else.

    PS: ppl keep talking about “setup” guys. If Kulemin and Grabo work the puck fine at 30+30, with a linemate who puts up just over 40 assists…why is it bad to have Carter put up the same amount of assists with kessel, but with 20 more goals? This game is a team sport, and no doubt in my mind theyd find a way to work it out, especially players of their stature and capability.- i Dno about u guys, but id WANT Carter for 11 years before id take Richards for 6. WTF is the difference?

    You may as will pencil Frattin in the lineup he’s making this team out of the gate .Burke as good as told us that when he said he didn”t need to go to the AHL … Frattin is our most ready prospect….

    I’m not saying I don’t WANT him, he’d look great in Blue and White…and a great addition to our team. Burke will not trade for him though, won’t happen.

    Thank you Alex for the report, I always wondered why Burke didn’t ask about him, I guess the kid really wanted to go to the Rangers as his father played in there. And you guys cmon stop hijacking the thread with more Richards lol. At least thank Mr. Tran for his piece and time.

    Look for the smurfs to discard Wisniewski to retain Markov then BAM!.. Burke brings in Wisniewski for 4 years 15.75m – turns into another Grabovski story. Defense solved;
    Aulie-Phaneuf
    Wisniewski-Schenn
    Gunnarsson-Komisarek

    @ Nazem.K-savzri
    If he inquires okay, I’ll go with that, I just don’t see him as Burke’s top option. IMO, I think it goes 1) Look at Stamkos, see if there’s anything there, either trade or offer sheet 2) Look at Richards, it costs us nothing 3) Parise (see Stamkos) 4) Trade for Stastny…if none of those work out, you goto Carter for sure before going to Weiss or the lower tier of Centremen. I just think for 11 years of Carter, a 60-70 point player thusfar, I’d rather wait for what we’ve got in-house. Just my opinion though.
