Morning Mashup: A Threat Of A 3-0 Hole

Tonight can’t come fast enough if you’re the Boston Bruins or the Vancouver Canucks. For Boston, it means a chance to get back into the swing of things by winning Game 3 in your own building. For Vancouver, it means a chance to put a stranglehold on the series.

A chance the magnitude of which is better explained by going over the probability of a 3-0 deficit comebacks throughout the course of time. In the league’s history only 3 teams managed a 3-0 series comeback. In 1975, after opening their Stanley Cup quarterfinal series with three losses to the Penguins, the New York Islanders put together a four-game streak, completing the comeback with a 1-0 win in Pittsburgh. Then of course, we have the Philadelphia Flyers last year and…

In what is still considered the greatest comeback in NHL history, the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated Detroit in the 1942 Stanley Cup Final after losing the first three games by scores of 3-2, 4-2, and 5-2. The Maple Leaf comeback began with a 4-3 victory in Detroit, and continued with a pair of convincing wins: 9-3 and 3-0. A record crowd of over 16,000 people packed Maple Leaf Gardens to see Toronto take the Cup by beating Detroit 3-1 in game seven.

In hockey, and more so in a best of 7 series, next game is always more important than the previous one/s. While Boston may be a good team, they are most probably not good enough to mount a 3-0 comeback in a battle with a superior team, which makes Game 3 all the more important.

    @ Cameron:
I disagree with virtually everything you said. I’ve never heard a Canuck complain in the media. Gillis…yes. Burke…yes. But no players have said a word.
    .
And please don’t presume to tell me how to feel about my team. I’ve supported them far longer than you have, and just because I think they’re nowhere near this Canucks team doesn’t mean I’m taking a “shot at the boys”. If you think that 2-3 players will make up a 32 point difference you’re delusional. Richards/Kessel isn’t in the same league as back-to-back scoring and MVP’s I’m afraid.
    .
There are players on the Canucks I hate, and Lord knows I hate their fans, but that is a team built the right way.

    @ light’em up:
If it’s true that every team has players that embellish things why is it that it’s only the Canucks you’re complaining about?

Exactly, Grabovski doesn’t dive. The guy is legitimately tripped because of his speed and hit hard, but gets up everytime. Tough as nails!!

    .
Anybody up for trying to guess the name of Winnipeg’s new team?
My guess is they’ll be calld the Manitoba Falcons, although I wish they’d bring back the Winnipeg Jets name!!

Okay bud. The Sedins weren’t what they were until the other pieces around them stepped up to the plate. If you honestly believe they are magic men, despite being largely outplayed by whoever has lined up against them in every series so far, then be my guest. The Canucks should be a perfect example of why we are only a few pieces away from that kind of drastic turn around. Just 3 years ago, the Canucks finished 11th in their Conference with 88 points. How come they can do it and we can’t? Oh that’s right, my bad, I forgot, it’s impossible for good things to happen to Toronto. lol, what was i thinking? These sorts of things are only realistic for everyone else.
    -
As for your complaining comment, well, you need look no further than the post game twitter feeds to find all the players in that dressing room complaining to the media about the officiating immediately. Really not hard.

Grabo?? Are u for real? the guy is not a diver, I have not seen him fall like he was freaking shot after a lil push. cmon most people on the canucks team do it, the only reason why we brag about it, is because they do it very frequently and consistently. I know that some teams will have players that will embelish shit, but even the star players and everyone? cmon. Diving, bitting and being dirty, not what I would want from my team.

Haven’t heard anybody’s opinion on possibly bringing in Raffi Torres, so I’m guessing nobody has interest in him and I don’t think Burke does either, since he could have had him last summer, but took a pass on him. Torres will los probably look to resign in Vancouver anyways.
    .
Just for arguements sake, doesn’t anybody think the following lineup would make the playoffs?
    Lupul – Kadri – Kessel
    MacArthur – Grabovski – Kulemin
    Torres – Bozak – Armstrong
    Brown – Brent – Orr
    (Boyce)
    .
    Aulie – Phaneuf
    Gunnrasson – Schenn
    Lashoff – Komisarek
    (Lebda)
    .
    Reimer
    Gustavsson/Giguere

No, I think every other team in the East will improve by at least the same margin as this team. In fact, Kadri on the top line might be a step backward over Bozak.

    @ Cameron:
All players are made better by an improving supporting cast. But if you honestly think that it was the presence of the great Alex Burrows on their wing that allowed them to claim back-to-back scoring and MVP titles then there really is no hope for you. Or was it the immortal Michael Samuellson last year? Come on, that’s an idiotic assertion.
    .
They’re sitting at 1st and 5th in playoff scoring so to say they’ve been out-played by their competition is laughable. They’re the best players on the best team and they’re 2 wins from the Cup. They’re playing great, absorbing the other teams’ best checking line and top defensive pairing an still scoring at a point per game. I love Phil Kessel, but I’m not sure he’s anywhere near ready to go up against the likes of Keith/Seabrook or Suter/Weber in a 7 game series.
    .
The year they finished with 88 points was a strange transition year for the Canucks. It was Naslund’s last year, so the leadership was shifting from him to the Sedins. Luongo was good, but not great. They’ve averaged 107 points since then though.
    .
You know, it shouldn’t make me any less of a Leaf fan to admire another team. Just because I respect what the Canucks have built (Burke/Nonis for the most part) doesn’t mean I don’t think it can happen for the Leafs. It’s just that they’re nowhere near that point right now. The jump from 75 points to 95 points is far easier than the one to 105 points.

Admire them all you want, but at least be reasonable about your own team. My God, if you really think Kessel and Richards could never match the immortal Sedin Sisters, than what can I say. The Sedins had barely cracked the league by the time they were Kessel’s age. Richards has done just about everything the Sedins have done with half the help. To think the Sedins are some unmatchable duo because they’ve been very good on the best team in the league is a joke. If they’d put up the exact same seasons in Toronto, my guess is Leaf Nation would want them traded for a bag of pucks. Grass is always greener syndrome continues to run rampant I see.
    -
Sedins only rack have those playoff points because of the absolutely horrid officiating in the last two rounds. It was a joke. Don’t know how it can even be argued. Just terrible.
