NHL gets free pass on Rome hit

It’s about as close to a “get out of jail free” card as the NHL could get. When the Canucks’ Aaron Rome decided to step up and clobber Nathan Horton last night, everyone immediately knew the hit was questionable. It’s become engrained in our minds (a good thing, perhaps?).

Upon further review, and some slo-mo replays, it looked like Rome’s hit was a bit late. Though I’ve seen much, much worse over the past few years.

The result was scary, but I wouldn’t call Rome a vicious player by any means.

Either way, the league’s disciplinarian Mike Murphy is faced with one of the easiest suspensions he’ll ever hand out. Not because the hit was easy to categorize as dirty, it wasn’t. In realtime it’s actually a  pretty tough call to make.

The reason why it’s so easy to suspend over a hit like that, is because Aaron Rome delivered it.

Over these playoffs, Nathan Horton has accumulated a solid 17 points. That’s more NHL points than Rome has gathered in his entire career, regular season included. So to suspend him for 1, 2, or 3 games is really nothing. The Canucks won’t be in rough shape due to Rome’s absence, and it shouldn’t break the series for them.

Horton, on the other hand, is one of the key offensive producers for the Bruins. And with him gone, their top line takes a major hit. This is why Rome’s own coach and teammates were quick to classify his hit as late – in other words “illegal.”

Personally, where question marks arise, is whether Kevin Bieksa or Christian Ehrhoff would receive the same treatment from their own organization, and furthermore, the NHL.

This isn’t to say Aaron Rome was thrown under the bus or anything. I don’t believe that’s the case at all.

I just believe it was an easy call to make for Vigneault and the Canucks considering Rome’s limited role on the club – many of us would probably act the same. And I don’t want this to seem like a rip on Aaron Rome for being a terrible hockey player or anything – he isn’t.

Anyone who can make it into the lineup for a Stanley Cup contender has my respect. It’s just, he simply isn’t a major factor in the teams’ success compared to what Horton brings to the table for the Bruins.

As for the NHL, they get to hit the EASY button on this one. Suspend Aaron Rome, and “make an example”, the Canucks won’t really complain – replacing him in the lineup should be easy – and the world will keep spinning.

Had Ehrhoff or Bieksa delivered the hit, things would be quite different. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be specific to team or position.

Had Kesler, Chara, Lucic, or anyone of a high skill level delivered a hit like that, Murphy’s job becomes a bit tougher. Now you’re talking about real punishment, and potentially altering the outcome of the series.

Vigneault (or whoever) isn’t easily throwing the word “late” around if one of his top pairing defenceman delivers a hit like that. How could he?

The only way justice (if that’s what you’re after) would actually be served in this situation, is if a top-line player from the Canucks was forced out of the lineup. And since that’s impossible, the NHL gets the privilege of making an easy decision this time around.

I’m still a little in the air about the hit itself. I do believe it was dirty, but slow motion makes “late” look really late. So as much as I think (and know) Rome should be suspended, I’m not ready to throw the Matt Cooke label on him or anything. And to be frank, I’ve noticed a lot of people voicing their opinion that they believe the hit was clean.

While I’m not sure I’m in the same boat, I can sympathize with folks who are afraid to see hitting taken away from the game – which is likely where we’re headed in the longterm.

The hit definitely stirred the Bruins and woke them up – anyone who denies that clearly hasn’t played a competitive game of hockey before. And as for the gameplan the B’s employed afterward, it was perfect. They hit everyone and everything in what turned out to be one of my favorite games of the playoffs so far, despite the 8-1 score.

It’s unfortunate that someone was injured along the way. But (and Ryan Kesler can back me up on this) sometimes, that’s just hockey.

    @ Bobs your uncle:
I don’t think there is an actual rule for time between a hit and possession. I was looking for something specific in the rule book earlier this morning regarding interference. Most I could find is that a player can only be body checked when in possession of the puck or shortly thereafter. Any steamboat or puck moving on jazz must just be a guild line for discipline.

been thinking a lot about a rumour I read a couple days ago, that carter would be traded to columbus. Is it possible columbus will bring in carter to replace nash as the big offensive producer, at about 3 million less a year, and then nash gets traded to us for kulemin, Gunner,++….

a 1st line of Nash-Richards-Kessel would make me happy as hell
and I think bringing in Nash would be enough to get richards signed

Kulemin – Richards – Kessel…. looks good to me although I don’t no if you can separate Grabo and Kulemin.

    @ Jordan:
I know Burke stated last summer that he wouldn’t give a long term deal to a player but he never said he wouldn’t trade for one!
You are probably right though… I don’t think Phillies fans would be very pleased if they had to cough him up either. Perhaps Carle or Ville Leino? They can’t keep them all.

How nice would ville leino look in the blue n whites next year!!! But seriously.. wtf is philly gonna do, just 16 spots filled, only about 50 000 in cap sapce right now, so maybe 1 050 000$ once the cap goes up a touch, and now tehy are gonna try to sign Bryz??? thats a shit show of a ca situation… someone is gonna be the odd man out… my guess is Richards however insane it may sounds. What does it take to get someone like that though, even if it is carter.

Blog coming tomorrow on this very topic. Flyers have a little more space than you think. Laperriere isn’t really on the cap since he’s just collecting an LTIR paycheck and their goalie situation can be managed in summer once Bryz is in to bring the cap down there a little bit. But yea, there are going to ahve to be two or three guys moved out of town. I think they will retain Leino, and move a core piece to do it.

It’s not fair value though. Cap hits are part of value. That’s the reason we got Phaneuf at a reduced rate. It’s the reason no star player has ever returned a top prospect in the modern NHL. Grabovski puts up more points at almost a 3rd the price – his value is much greater than Stastny’s currently.

Yeah, i guess… even if you take out laperriere, leighton and include another mil for salary cap increase that still leave them about 4 mil total… thats to get bryz signed, get leino signed and still plug wholes that they need to fill… is moving one guy gonna be enough?

    Nash, 34G, 32A, 66P, +2 (7.8 cap hit)
    Kulemin, 30G, 30A, 60P, +7 (2.35 cap hit)

Don’t believe everything you hear. Kulemin is not as good as Nash, but at a quarter the price-tag, he’s far more valuable to our club. Funny how when a Leaf has stats like Nash, he’s not good enough to lead his team to the playoffs – but when someone on another team is in that position, he is just on a shitty team and it’s not his fault at all. The Jackets have been stronger than the Leafs for a few years now, and Nash has done nothing.

Why would Timonen choose to leave the Flyers now though? His career is drawing to a close, he’s only got so many more chances at a Cup and he’s on a perennial contender.

Well they can’t move Hartnell. They’ll try to move Versteeg. The Big Z is done for sure. I don’t think they’ll be able to re-sign Leino. Guess we will find out soon enough.

no doubt… theres a couple big names that could be pivotal players on a lot of different teams. I agree that Hartnell is going NOWHERE, versteeg they could try, but lastyears efforts werent exactly awe inspiring. Zherdev definately wont be back, itll be interesting to see where he ends up. Depending on what they free up for capspace resigning Leino is a no-brainer, but they need to do the leg work there first

And now for something completely different, Dallas won tonight, that makes me smile a little.

Versteeg’s play has lowered his value temporarily. Do you move him just for the sake of moving him after giving up a 1st and a 3rd for him just a few months ago? After all, it did come out that he was playing hurt, and needed stomach surgery at the close of the season. If they move him now, it’s pretty bad asset management. Buy high, sell low?

Thats one way of looking at it. If he is able to find his form, they cvould manage with him for another year, but thats a big cap hit for a third liner if his production doesnt pick up
