Morning Mashup: Rome Gets The Gate

In the wake of the Aaron Rome hit on Nathan Horton Monday night, there were mixed reviews on the severity of the incident and debate over the number of games Rome would be suspended for. Bruins fans, quite unsurprisingly, felt Rome should be booted for the remainder of the post season, while Canucks fans – of course – thought he deserved only one or two games, deeming that it was an unfortunate result to an otherwise clean hit.

After taking all of the evidence into consideration and reviewing different angles of the replay, interim NHL disciplinarian Mike Murphy announced a four-game suspension for Rome, sidelining him for the remainder of the post-season. Whether or not you agree with the ruling, the league needed to take a stand against illegal hits (and late hits, in this case) to send a message to the other 29 teams that they will not be tolerated.

Although he dished the puck to line mate Milan Lucic only fractions of a second earlier, Horton should of been more aware when entering the attacking zone. However, he should also have a level of comfort knowing that he will not have his head taken off when he no longer has the puck on his stick. One can make a case for both the offender and the victim, but it ultimately comes down to respect for player safety. The league made a fair decision to bench Rome for an equal length of time that Horton will be out. Whether or not the fair decision was made easier by Rome’s status as a bottom-pairing defenceman is up for debate.

Shortly after the suspension was issued, Mike Murphy stated that he consulted with former disciplinarian czar Brian Burke regarding an appropriate length for Rome. Negative reaction from Vancouver has caused many to question if their is a conflict of interest in the NHL disciplinarian office. First it was Gregory Campbell, now this.

“Burke’s contract with the Canucks was not renewed after the 2003-04 season, and he is friends with Aquilini business rivals who unsuccessfully sued the Canucks chairman in 2005.

In 2009, the Canucks filed tampering charges with the NHL after Burke and Leafs coach Ron Wilson made public comments about Canucks players. The league fined the Leafs in October 2009, based on Wilson’s remarks that his team was interested in the Sedin twins, who were approaching free agency that summer. Burke later admitted that he regretted mentioning the players by name.”

- Matthew Sekeres, The Globe and Mail

Murphy can’t be faulted for utilizing the resources available to him, but the connection that Burke holds with the Canucks, along with the recent tampering charges pressed against the Leafs, makes you wonder whether their is a conflict of interest up top. Do you think Murphy crossed the line by consulting with Burke? Would the suspension have been the same length without Burke’s input?

At least you agree that the suspension is different depending on the name on the jersey. Total crap.

And that was his second time getting suspended in those playoffs. It’s absolutely true… the name on the back of the jersey makes a difference.

The name on the Jersey always matters, but that hit was dirty. Rome watched the pass leave the stick and charged him, blind side. (barley late and barley blindside) but i think rome knew he was about to lay the smack down.

    @ Cameron:
but, if they add another defenseman , and then all the raises the rfas are going to get , wont take long to eat up the existing space. especially if he gets richards at approx. 8 mil.
schenn , reimer, mac, gunner will all get raises . just a matter of how much and if any were traded.
i dont know if its just me, but i kinda like the idea of trading komi and then try getting babchuk at about 2 mil per.
if gunner is in a trade , then maybe have a shot at erhoff ???

I didn’t say it was a perfect system…he deserved what he got and that doesn’t mean that Chara didn’t deserve a suspension either,

This isn’t saturday night bingo with your grandma… this is the Stanley Cup Finals and if you are crossing the blue line entering the other teams zone with the puck or have just passed the puck… you better keep your head up. Rome made an effort to be in front of Horton and he kept his elbow down.
That was a clean hit. Had Horton not been injured this would have a been a different story.

    And neither can Horton….disgusting!!!
As for your he didn’t even look, he had looked up ice and saw where everyone was before he made the pass, and if you ahve played the game, you know your timing and how you actually feel where people are and can see them out of the corner of your eye…the fact is that Rome didn’t move until after he had passed the puck, so he never imagined that he was going to get hit…plain and simple, there was no excuse on Rome’s part to make that hit and he should have backed off.

I just hope Burke don’t get left with his tounge hanging out rueing the day he never made a deal. The next couple of days may tell us if there is any truth to him going after Richards rights. If that doesn’t happen we may have to fight it out with all other bidders after July 1st. If I were betting I would expect Holmgren will have moved Carter by that time especially now that he has the rights to Bryz. This whole thing could play out pretty quickly. I find it hard to believe Burke would pass on Carter unless he’s pretty dam sure he has good chance to sign Richards.

    @ captain morgan:
Yes, Horton can’t play, but it’s not like Rome had a day to think about whether he wants Horton to miss out on that. Horton hit his head on the ice hard, it’s not like Rome planned it out to really hurt him. Maybe he did, we will never know… the fact is for what Rome actually did, and I mean REGARDLESS of how hurt Horton is, doesn’t deserve a 4 game penalty. Do you want to enter into an age of disciplinary action where a player must sit out as long as the guy he hurt? Should players miss whole seasons for hits? NO! This hurts he game since guys won’t want to risk making the big hit, because shit can happen. As you said it’s a fast game, so it’s not like Rome had 2 minutes to sit and think about hitting him late.

If he had the puck still, it would have been a different story, but he didn;t and hadn’t for a second, he had taken two and half steps and covered 10-15 feet….are we just going to let guys blow away people as they hit the blue line?
