2011 Draft Profiles: Ty Rattie

In the fourth installment of the MLHS 2011 Draft Profile series, we’re going to take a quick look at Portland Winterhawk winger Ty Rattie. Our very own Brian Huddle informs us that the Maple Leafs have been showing Rattie around the city, much like they did with Leaf draftee Greg McKegg last year, which may perhaps tip their hand. Rattie is a crafty and skilled winger with tremendous offensive upside but his small stature and average skating may push him back toward the latter third of the first round.

The Basics: Creative and crafty playmaking winger for the Portland Winterhawks; 28 goals and 51 assists for 79 points in 67 games played

Strengths: Rattie has been a popular name with scouts for a long time as a tremendous minor hockey player and the 2nd overall pick in the WHL Bantam Draft. He is a very intelligent offensive player who offers great passing ability and excellent offensive instincts. He reads the opposing defense very well both on the rush and in the stagnant offensive zone setup. Despite his lack of top end speed, he can be a tough cover as he displays sublimely soft hands, puckhandling and agility and possesses the ability to find the open seams. While his speed is mediocre, he is actually very comfortable on his skates, displaying the ability to change direction at the drop of a hat and evade defenders with ease. He plays with a lot of energy and intensity, especially when battling for pucks in the offensive zone.

Weaknesses: At just 5’11 and 163 lbs, Rattie needs to get a lot bigger and stronger to survive the grind of an entire NHL season. He is very much a perimeter player at this point in his development and will need to improve upon his effectiveness in high traffic areas. When pressured, he has a tendency to sometimes run himself into poor positions along the boards and be muscled off the puck for a turnover, but overall he has played a safer game in recent months. Defensively, he’s still a little bit of a floater at times, especially on the backcheck, but he has made improvements over the course of the season. His skating is passable but may limit his ability to truly become a top notch offensive weapon. He could also stand to shoot a little more often to make him less predictable coming down on the rush.

Draft Day Outlook: Rattie was Central Scouting’s 11th best North American skater at the midterm rankings but has dropped down 17th in their final rankings. He probably won’t be selected in the first 20 picks and will reasonably slot in somewhere between picks 20-30. The Central Scouting Bureau tends to be a little more generous to smaller players with experience and production than NHL teams do, so it’s not inconceivable that Rattie could even slide just outside of the first round. He’s a bit of a gamble, but with skills and a style of game comparable to Buffalo’s Tyler Ennis, Rattie has a chance to become a valuable offensive contributor.

I was hoping at the begining of the playoffs that the Nucks would win and bring the cup back to Canada…now…I am embarrassed as hell at the way they are playing.
There are worse dives there then in soccer. Every guy is almost dead on every check. All the Bruins have to do is skate next to them and they drop like flies.
The Russian judge gave Burrows a 10 for his head snap. What a joke!!
    This is pathetic.
    What a bunch of floppers.

At this point the only guy on the Canucks who I want to win is Luongo. Way to show those fucks who booed you last game when you were pulled. Absolutely disgraceful game by Burrows and Lapierre, fucking disgusting. These fans don’t even deserve Luongo.
    -
On another note, I liked to see the Sedins man up a bit. I’m still rooting for Timmy Thomas and Kaberle though.

I am not interested in this series, but I read all the comments. What I find interesting is that the Nucks have continued the diving, acting being shot etc.. You might think its “winning at all costs” mentality, but they lost. My issue is with the Coach. No balls to stand up to the players and make them play with some level of integrity. He has seemingly blessed this type of game plan. Shameful, and embarrassing. If the ends justify the means, then Crosby will get a couple of big concussions this coming season and Pitt is no longer a challenge.

I know Burkie won’t (politically can’t ???) speak out about this, but I really would like to hear his take.

    @GreekLeafer
Luongo lover eh? He brought the boos on himself last game… while the whole team sucked a goalie of “elite” calibre doesnt get lit for 12 in two games. His inconsistencies are what they are, but he certainly earned the victory tonight. The whole team came to play tongiht. Flopping from those two clowns aside, the rest of the Nucks gave it everything they had, even the sisters attempted to play physical hockey. I want a game 7 so bad now!

Interesting as the Sedins and Higgins were able to draw penalties by actually SKATING. Keep moving and the call will follow, for fack’s sakes. Lapierre embellished once or twice and I counted Burrows 3 or 4 times tonight.

Just a little food for thought when Leaf Nation wakes up tomorrow morning and you all have your cup of joe ready for a little hockey talk.
    -
I understand the Canucks have a handful of dishonorable players and that the diving at times can be quite ridiculous. However a lot of you are missing a few things I’d like to point out.
    -
    1. For the most part, Vancouver plays an exciting brand of hockey, one which I really do respect. They are mobile on defense, have a fantastic transition game and work as a complete unit from front to back. They are a fast slick team that is always on attack regardless of the score. A model in which I believe Brian Burke also admires and is trying to implement in Toronto. (see point 4)
    -
    2. They also have grit and heart that people really do overlook. Kesler is… well let’s face it, he is having a hell of a playoffs and no one can take away how hard he is fitting night in a night out. The guy wears his heart on his sleeve and battles hard. Then you have Torres, Hansen, Raymond and others following in his footsteps. They are unfortunately over shadowed by the Burrows, Lapieree’s and Sedins who are doing a hell of an acting job out there but even those guys, aside from the show can play great hockey… maybe not Laps but he came through tonight for sure.
    -
    3. In a couple years when no one really remembers the makeup of the team and who spent the day with the cup people will/could remember that Canada again has a Stanley Cup representative. I do realize there are more Canadians on Boston but having a Canadian franchise win a cup will do more for Canada in the stance of the NHL then anything. At least, I think a lot of this mess will be forgotten and we’ll be happy a Canadian team won.
    -
    4. I also think we are all forgetting that while Boston maybe be playing hard now, they are and have been a team for quite a while that plays TRAP hockey. All regular season this team was like watching paint dry and I think we all forget that. You want to talk about putting a mark on hockey with diving? How about the big bad trapping bruins who will go up 1-0 and trap for the next 40 mins. I love Tim Thomas and think he’s a great goalie but let’s not kid ourselves here too… he set a record this year because not only was he exceptional, Boston sat on a lot of leads. For that I can find it easy not to cheer for them.
    -
Again, I’m not trying to say Vancouver is the best or anything, because deep down I feel like I’m picking between the lesser of two evils, but try not to let a few guys ruin what could be a Canadian team winning then Stanley Cup and sticking it to the Americanized NHL… at least a little bit anyway.

    @ mjs18:
With all due respect, you can’t possibly equate trapping hockey to flopping hockey.
    .
Vancouver, without a doubt, is a highly skilled team, but the complete lack of integrity in their game (see: Sedin 1, Sedin 2, Burrows, Lapierre, Luongo, Raffi “I’m going for your head” Torres, Kesler). That’s 1/3 of their team, without thinking about lesser players (Ballard’s dive in the last game, etc), who play the game with no honour.
    .
The Bruins might be a boring team that can get a bit dirty, but at least they play the game with respect. How many times did we see people pile on top of Luongo last night? Damn near every stoppage in the Boston end had a Canuck on top of Thomas. If I was Burke, I’d be ashamed of that team. And I am so stoked we went with Kessel instead of the Sedins – I will never want to win like this.

This is a realistic awesome lineup upgrade next year.

Joffrey Lupul Brad Richards(signed for less than 5years) Phil Kessel

Nikolai Kulemin Mikhail Grabovski Clarke MacArthur

Nazem Kadri Tyler Bozak Colby Armstrong

Mike Brown Tim Brent Colton Orr

**Matt Frattin replaces first winger lost to injury
** Joe Colborne replaces first centerman lost to injury

[Kadri has a great spot to learn in there with Bozie and Armstrong, if Kadri is primed for a breakout year, that would be a very dangerous, effective 3rd line...reminds me of Philly...also, if Orr is unavailable, Fratten could even give the 4th line an unsuspecting offensive punch while maintaining its role as a tight checking line]

    DEFENSE

    Dion Phaneuf K. Aulie

Luke Schenn F/A puck moving defenseman

    C. Gunnarson Mike Komisarek

[Blacker, Gardiner, Mikus, Holzer can battle for 6th spot]

    GOALIES

    G – James Reimer

J.S. Giguere (resigned cheap as a mentor)

**Jonas Gustavsson, Jussi Rynass, and Ben Scrivens waiting in the wings/available for trade.
