Clever title, eh? In all seriousness, it was refreshing to have something Leaf-related to discuss after weeks of playoff, suspensions and Winnipeg talk.

The Leafs made it official by signing James Reimer to a multi-year contract extension worth $1.8 million per season, not including bonuses. In half a season as a 22-year old rookie, Reimer posted outstanding numbers and showed signs of becoming the Leafs’ legitimate number one goalie of the future. To be fair, that can’t be determined by 37 games at the NHL level (the salary figure takes that into account), but the Leafs could be sitting on a potential steal for the next three seasons and at a $1.8 million  cap hit they bear pretty minimal risk should the unthinkable happen (i.e. Reimer’s rookie season ends up being an anomaly).

With a .921, Reimer is tenth in save percentage among goalies who played thirty games or more last season. The nine goalies ahead of him ranged in salary from 2.8 million (Rinne) to 10 million (Luongo) and average $5.5 million/season. If Reimer posts a SV% in the neighbourhood of what he did last season, the Leafs are sitting on a veritable bargain at the most important position on the ice. The unshakable quality about Reimer’s mental game combined with a grounded, grateful attitude certainly gives hope he won’t fall victim to a sophomore slip. Reimer seems like an unlikely candidate to forget what got him here in the first place.

Jonathan Quick got the same deal after his 2009-10 rookie campaign with Los Angeles Kings in which he posted a .907 save percentage (quite a bit lower than Reimer’s .921), but did so over a 72 game span. Carey Price after a 41-game, .912 2009-10 season received $2.5 million in 2010-11 and $3 million in 2011-12, but that was a sophomore season after he entered the league with a 52 game, .905 rookie season. Seems like assistant GM Claude Loiselle (who negotiated the contract) and Reimer’s party did a good job striking a balance with a deserved but cautious raise.

i agree 100%. Konopka brings faceoff, and PK

I really don’t want to waste capspace and a roster spot for a guy who skates out..hits someone a few times and thats his night… no offence to Orr…great guy and does his job…but I think its a waste.

I think we may have a bit of Leaf-fan-disease on Boyce and Brent (or at least I might). You know where just because they came out of our system they must not be legit…however if they had done what they did last year on say Detroit we’d be salivating all over them and saying how awesome their farm system is to have produced those guys?

I do see your point, but look at what happened to Pittsburgh at the hands of the Islanders and Montreal at the hand of the Bruins last year…I know that we have some tough guys on our team, but that enforcer tends to stop that shit in its tracks.

If you’re going to sign a 4th line guy, it should be Mike Rupp, no questions asked. This guy can do it all, and he isn’t a moron like Konopka. Classy guy, has played well with the Penguins, has size, fights on occassion, creates energy, PK guy, even stands in front of the net on the PP sometimes.

    @ Skar:
I agree and Toronto should have a place for them, that place is the Marlies where they can imprint that hustle into every one of our prospects.
They still maker a great living playing a game they love.
You have to crack a few eggs to make an omelette and those 3 players are the eggs.
If you have a chance at signing Konopka for a reasonable amount you gotta do it and I hope Burke gets a chance at him.

Then get an enforcer who can win faceoffs, or play on the PK.. have more then one dimension is all I ask. being big and strong doesn’t mean you can’t play.
    @ Skar:
    Agreed…I’m big fans of both

I think I agree with you…lol…but I can’t just commit to that for two reasons…

    1) I really haven’t seen enough of Konopka night in and night out to comfortably say I NEED to have him
    2) I have a hard time saying goodbye…especially to guys that have bled for the Leafs, guys like Colton Orr, even though I know his time maybe up *sniff

    @ Ensign:
I do agree with that point, but they are tough to find…Probert, Clarke, Williams were elite enforcers…I do agree that Orr has lost some of his skating and is a liability out there now and is taking away a spot from someone who brings more skill.

Boyce had 13 pts and was a +8 on the year in 46 games. Tell me that doesnt fucking get him to be our #4 center and I will literally fight you. If we sign him, I dont care but its not a priority. He fights? Orr does better. Wins faceoffs? Bozak, Grabo and possibly Richards can too. Hes not worth the 2+ mil overpayment he will receive. Boyce is worth the 750k and more that he will probably demand

    @ Jordan:
Nice…Boyce is a solid player for the fourth line. I think its also important for BB to reward the hard work and blood players give to the team..it shows loyalty and promotes from players…it makes stories that cause players to want to come here. If you just ship them out for slight ‘better’ players then all of a sudden you’ll find people not really wanting to bleed for the team..to fight and suffer to win….you’ll find people who will do their jobs adn thats it…
