2011 Draft Profiles: Sven Bartschi
Share

A few days ago, we learned about the playmaking Portland Winterhawk forward Ty Rattie. Today, let’s talk about another very talented draft eligible player from that line: goal scoring machine Sven Bartschi. With goal scoring instincts and natural ability reminiscent of rookie phenom Jeff Skinner, Bartschi is quite arguably one of the best pure goal scorers of the draft class.

The Basics: Goal scoring forward for the Portland Winterhawks; 34 goals and 51 assists for 85 points in 66 games played

Strengths: Bartschi comes with about as complete an array of offensive skills as there is. He has wonderful hands and puckhandling ability and has no problem weaving through traffic to create scoring opportunities. From the faceoff circle and in, he is a devastating scoring threat: finding seams, sneaking behind defenders or unloading an absolute bomb of a slapshot. The passing ability is criminally underrated and one Central Scouting talent evaluator believes he could be the best playmaker in the entire WHL. He is a quick and deceptive skater, displaying excellent edgework and balance. Bartschi plays with a great deal of passion and feistiness that should endear him to the hometown fans at the next level.

Weaknesses: Yes, he’s another one of those smallish forwards checking in around 5’11 185, but he isn’t afraid to take a hit to make a play. The top end speed is a bit mediocre which could limit his breakout rush opportunities at the NHL level. He loves being the focal point of the offense and likes playing with the puck on his stick but when he is not involved offensively, he can sometimes get frustrated and begin to force his game a little. The defensive side of the game is quite suspect but with the right amount of coaching should be able to eventually grade out as average.

Draft Day Outlook: Bartschi is listed as Central Scouting’s 7th best North American skater and figures to be selected somewhere between 10th and 15th overall. With talks of the Maple Leafs looking to upgrade one of their first round picks and rumored interest in linemate Ty Rattie, it may not be out of the question to see the organization move up with the intention of reuniting Portland’s dynamic duo in Toronto.

    But you got to look at it as if this is Lou’s only chance at getting something for Parise.
    I didn’t know Parise played centre before… that’s pretty cool.

    @Cloud09

    Yea, I felt a bit unsure writing them in 5-6 spot but these kids look great. I think they’ll surprise a lot of people come next training camp. But you’re right, it still wouldn’t hurt signing another defence man for a year to help these kids grow.

    Lou said 2 months ago that he was going to start negotiations with Parise’s camp, and Parise said yesterday that he still hasn’t heard from him. It’s not the 1st time he’s sounded annoyed by the situation. Plus I would assume Parise has a relationship with Burke and Wilson from USA Hockey. I like the proposal by Kostas, but think it would have to involve one of our top prospects too.

    Well, Colborne is in that mould of guys who take longer to make it to the show because of how you have to adapt to the size and the massive changes in your body. I mean, think about it. If Colborne works out with an NHL trainer all summer, he’s going to put on like 25 pounds, whereas someone 5’11″ would be lucky to put on 10. The weight alone requires adjustments to your game. Sounds like excuses, but there’s a reason these big guys take forever for the most part.
    -
    I think Gardiner could surprize. I sometimes put him in the lineup, but only because I think he will surprize. I don’t expect him to do it, and I would not hestitate to let him develop in the AHL.

    Nah, you’re talking about a 26 year old impending free agent. Look at what Kovalchuk returned in the exact same situation, and he wasn’t coming off a major knee injury: Oduya (expensive 3rd pairing D-man), Bergfors (probably the equivalent of a Bozak, only at wing), Cormier (middling prospect, ie. Brad Ross/Luca Caputi), 1st (very late). Don’t know why people always think we’e going to have to trade the world for these guys.

    Yeah i could see Gardiner being able to make a splash at training camp. even if he does though, i dont think its a great idea to bring him up. post-deadline at the earliest, i would rather save him for 2012/13. same sortof deal with kadri when he wow’d at training camp in his first year if i remember right.

    and to your other post at biglapowski, i agree. these “superstar” guys really aren’t that insanely priced as some think. I’m one of the guys that can overvalues them in trade talks sometimes hah, but im getting better at not doing that as much

    @ Kostas:
    I think Burke is very dead set on making sure every new pro player on his team does some form of time in the minors. I’m pretty sure most of us though that Kadri, Bozak, and Stalberg were all going to get starting spots after having great camps but it didn’t really pan out that way. Gardiner & Blacker are going to be good, but lets get their feet wet first before we throw them into the deep end.

    Gardiner isn’t an 18 year old undeveloped kid though. He’s been in college for 3 years since he was drafted. Still, I don’t really care either way, just a prediction based largely off of the comments of heard about his skating. Wilson loves defence-men who can skate the way he can and I could see him getting a long look.

    @bigslapowski

    It’s probably well known right now all over the league that Parise and Lou aren’t getting along. This will hurt Lou’s chances when it comes to negotiating a trade. Kind of like when Kessel only wanted to come to the Leafs. Only reason why Boston got what they got was because Burke wanted to keep his friendship with Chia. Now look at the deal Toronto got for Kaberle… This is why Leafs don’t have to give up a lot but just enough to help Lou so that he doesn’t look like a idiot.

    @Cameron

    Does make a lot of sense for those 3 teams to make that trade… Semin to NJ to keep Kovalchuk happy as he is there new franchise player seems about right.

    @ Cameron:
    Yeah that’s true. ncaa definitely has helped him develop further than kids coming fresh out of the chl, but i still think he could use at least half a season in the A to refine his skills. i think this kid is definitely something special, dont know what the ducks were thinking on that trade. could be a huge steal for us. If he doesnt make the team out of camp, i have a feeling they are going to wait until they feel he is going to be a 3/4 defenseman (similar for waiting for kadri to be a top 6), worthy of playing beside schenn. i could see him and schenn as a pretty dynamic pairing. cant wait to see what this kid can do

    All of those things you mentioned are irrelevant if Parise is leaving in a year regardless. Kovalchuk was the franchise in Atlanta. He was the only thing that brought any viewership at all. But when they knew he was leaving, they had no choice but to trade him for what they could get. Everyone in the league was rumored interested in him. He was considered to be the second best sniper in the world, behind only Ovechkin (how quickly we forget after one bad season). By comparison, Parise has been injured for a year, is the same age as Kovalchuk was then (27). These things further cripple his value. But really, if he was truly more valuable to the franchise than Kovalchuk, he would have been the one with the 100 million dollar contract. Fan perception is that he is more valuable, but the reality is that the Devils have already chosen their guy, and it’s not Parise.

    Yea, so basically Lou is going to go to George McPhee and say “What’s it going to take to get Semin” and then go to Toronto and get that return for Parise (plus a little extra – or dump a little salary as well, ie. Zubrus).

    @ Kostas:
    But at 1st, we gave up a lot for Kessel. I love Kessel, but we did overpay, as I think we would have to for Parise. Maybe we take on an older player with a larger, expiring contract to take down the asking price, but it will still cost us. To me, it would be something like one of our 1sts, 2nd rounder, Blacker, and Mac or Bozak.

    @Burkedoingwork

    I didn’t expect Burke to get that kind of return for Beauchemin to be honest. Although Lupul’s contract isn’t that great he still brings a lot to the table. He can skate, shoot, dig the corners, hit, drop the gloves… I mean, you play this guy on your top 6 and he is a 25 goal per season threat. Now add Gardiner to that who I think will be an absolute stud in this league some day and a conditional pick a you wonder what Anaheim was smoking…

    @bigslawpowski

    Lou isn’t looking to rebuild the team though. He’s looking to add to the roster which is why I think he wants players like Lupul, MacArthur, Gunnerson, Bozak… He’s got Kovalchuk and needs to make sure he can keep the team around him competitive. Don’t think he is looking for just picks and prospects that will take time to develop.
    Boston at the time needed the cap space which is why they didn’t want another player in return for Kessel.
