New deal coming for Gunnarsson?

New deal coming for Gunnarsson?
Share

It’s starting to look that way. A sports outlet in Sweden known as “SportBladet” is reporting that Carl Gunnarsson may be extending his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs for at least another two years.

While no contract has officially been signed, agent Peter Werner has informed SportBladet that Gunnarsson has agreed on a two year, one way deal with the blue and white.

Link to the untranslated story is HERE.

From Google Translate, we can decipher the following;

… And now Sportbladet can reveal that he will remain in Toronto for two more years.

“We agree with Toronto, but the contract is yet signed. This shows that Carl is now a solid NHL-back, especially given that the contract is for two years and one-way” said agent Peter Werner of CAA.

While nothing is official until an actual contract is signed, this looks to be good news for the Leafs and Gunnarsson if all goes to plan. The amount of money has not been discussed publicly yet, so I guess we’ll have to wait on that.

Glove tap to our own Mislav Jantoljak for digging up the story. Follow him @Xterratu

If the Leafs go ahead and lock Gunnarsson in for two more years, do they still continue their search for another puck moving defenceman? Or do they just increase his responsibility going forward?

Updated: The Leafs official website has issued a press release for Gunnarsson’s contract extension. It’s confirmed as a two year deal, but there still hasn’t been a cap-hit discussed. Link for the official release found here.

More: From James Mirtle at the Globe and Mail

Gunnarsson’s deal will have a cap hit of roughly $1.3-million a year. Seems reasonable.

And there you have it.

    @Gilbert

We are not discussing whether we are getting those players but whether those players might make get dealt… Some people like to take stabs at what it would take if they were available and there is nothing wrong with that. It’s another long summer for us Leaf fans… Let us have some fun.
    -
On another NJ note… Lou spoke out today and made it clear that if the right deal came along, he would consider trading his 4th overall pick in the draft this summer.

    @ Cameron:

As much as you might think that post was entirely about you, it’s not. You make a good point about big money players fetching somewhat lame returns in recent years. I disagree with your comparison of stats at a certain age, and then projecting that to say players have similar potential, but you’re hardly the only person I was referring to. Every time I come on here I read about how Kadri is the next Gilmour, Colborne is the next Thornton, Gardiner is going to be our Yandle, Frattin and D’Amigo will be 70 point guys, Gunnar is going to be so much like Kaberle we will think he is Kaberle, etc, etc. Some of that comes from you, but by no means all of it.

I am thrilled that the Leafs finally have a decent prospect base. It’s very exciting, and I really want to see these kids succeed. The reality is though, despite all the hype, and how orgasmic Pierre McGuire always sounds on draft day, most prospects don’t turn into stars. Most guys with 80 point potential settle in around 60. Most guys who score 60 points when they are 24 score 55-65 points every year until they retire. If Kadri and Colborne are 70 point guys in four years, I will be ecstatic. If Frattin is playing quality third line minutes, and getting close to 40 points, awesome. If Gardiner becomes Bret Hedican, rather than Keith Yandle, I will consider that to be pretty good. People seem to think the 2014 Leafs will look like this:

    Kadri (20g, 75A)-Colborne (40g-50A)-Kessel (65g, 30A)
    Kulemin (50g 30A)-Grabo(30g 50a)-McKegg (35g, 40A)
    Frattin (35g, 35a)-Bozak(30g, 40A)-D’Amigo (35g, 30A)
    Ross (30g, 30a, 250PIM)-McNeill (30g, 30a)-Mueller (30g, 30a)

    Phaneuf (30g, 40a, 1689 hits)-Gardiner (20g, 50a)
    Schenn (20g, 25a, 1688 hits, +356)-Gunnar (30g, 30a)
Blacker (25g, 25a)-Ian White (just happy to be back)

    Reimer- (82 w, 1.000 s%, 0.00 GAA)
Owuya (0 gp, teamed up with Snow to make rap album, went double platinum)

It’s just not going to happen. Some of these guys aren’t going to be NHLers. Most aren’t going to be stars. If one tops 80 points regularly, we’ll be very lucky, not because they’re not good players, or not good people, but because most prospects don’t turn into high-end NHLers, period.

And again Cameron, this is by no means totally, or even mostly for your benefit, though I do think your dreams of what Burke can dump to get stars are a bit unreasonable. Stajan, Hagman, and White had 41, 33, and 26 points in 55 games when they were traded for Phaneuf, who had been in decline for several seasons, was having issues in the dressing room, and had 22 points in 55 games. Yes, the pieces were worth sacrificing for the whole, but they still looked pretty good as pieces. Bozak, a pick and a goalie prospect with no NHL experience aren’t nearly as attractive a package right now, whatever we as Leaf fans believe they may one day achieve.

    Alright guys, prediction time:

-Steven Stamkos will resign with Tampa Bay.
-NJ Devils will get a 1 year deal through arbitration for Zach Parise. Then once the team bottoms out again next season, proving to us all that without Jacque’s trap system, they suck… Lou will trade Parise at the dead line.
-Richards will sign this summer with Toronto.
-Carter will remain in Philly and others like Versteeg will get traded to make room for Bryzgalov.
-Nash will waste yet another season playing in Columbus.
-Garth Snow will offer John Tavaras a 20 year deal.
-Kessel will score 47 goals this year.
-Brian Burke will defeat Dave Nonis in a hot dog eating contest.
-Pittsburgh will destroy the Eastern Conference this year with a healthy roster.
-Leafs will finish 7th overall and make the playoffs

It’s too soon for that. I don’t think Burke will trade Scrivens unless a GM insists on including him in a trade for a player BB really wants. Or any goalie for that matter, until the scouts have had some time to assess their potential. One or two injuries and we’ll be glad we have them. Bryzgalov had already spent 2+ seasons with the Ducks when BB put him on waivers and allowed him to further his career.

So I just want to give my 2 cents on the whole Kuli Parise thing, take it for what its worth; Cameron (as we all know) undervalues almost every payer outside Toronto, he says some crap about not trading core assets for a guy like Parise… Listen its a simple concept, if Parise is moving A LOT of teams will be interested, he’s a 90 point 40 goal player who is at the beginning of his prime – he is a game changing, franchise player. Anyone who wouldn’t move kulemin for him is nuts, I love kuli but he will never score 90 points and he will never be the franchise player, he fits perfectly where he is playing 15 minutes a game as a great secondary scorer.
    -
The thing is, if New Jersey is moving Parise they will move him for whatever package makes them most competative, there will be a bidding war and that’s how his value goes up from just compensation picks. It is so rare that players as good as Parise and as young as Parise get moved, so when they do you can’t predict anything using past trades, all you can know is that the best offer will win as always. I am certain burke would move kuli and kadri for parise.
    -
Also on the Stamkos thing, I’d move just about anyone for Stamkos… Once again you’d all be crazy not to.
    -
One thing I do agree with that I’ve heard here is that Rick Nash isn’t worth kulemin, and I tend to agree. Nash has become over rated and over paid. Anyways I’m done now I think, time to wait til tomorrow to here Cameron talk about how Tim Brent is better than Sidney Crosby. :)

    @ LoMac:
    .
Great post! I totally agree with your assessment on Parise’s value. You may be right in saying that Parise is worth Kulemin and/or Kadri, but I still don’t think you trade either of them, especially Kulemin. In the past, the Leafs have had a tendency to trade young controllable players for established players with much higher salaries.
    .
What the Leafs need to focus on is sustainable long-term success. Growing your own young players at reasonable contracts is the best way to do that. Sure, you can make a trade or two for a star later on when they might be the last piece of the puzzle, but at the beginning of the retool/rebuild phase, you gotta stockpile as much young talent as you can.
    .
Leafs right now are a top 10 team in terms of minor league talent, it would be great if they could improve on that depth moving forward. Lets see what our young guys can do for now.

    @ Nights:

Not sure if we’re reading the same prospects guide, but the one I am reading would agree with your upside, and take 15-30 off to get the more reachable and likely numbers. It would also suggests that a lot of these guys have an 80% chance of even being regular NHLers, and a 30-55% chance of ever coming close to their upside.

That’s a more balanced view by far than the belief that every kid is going to be great some day, and we could have eight guaranteed stars just waiting around in our prospect pool, none of whom are tradeable because they will all be gods one day.

I don’t doubt that a lot of our prospects have the potential to be top six forwards (55-85 points), or top 4 D. I just don’t believe any one of them is a sure to reach that potential, and so when it comes down to trading a guy like Kadri, who I hope will one day score 70 points, for a guy in his mid-20s, signed for the next four years, who DOES reach 70 points and more, I say yeah, if it’s necessary, trade the kid for Stastny.

Just like every other star moved in the last decade, the bidding war you think there will be will not materialize, as only 3-4 teams will be in a position to make serious offers, and only 2 of them will be in a financial position to afford an 8 million dollar player. Making matters more complicated, stars usually make it known what kind of city they want to play in, eliminating someone from the mix. This literally happens every year, and people like you make the same argument, and mock the shit out of me, and every single time you’re the kind of guy just flabbergasted by how little the return was on a guy, saying “well Burke could have been in on that!”.
    -
Then 10 minutes later we all forget that ever happened and go back to “Schenn, Kadri, plus…”.

Well, I don’t have faith in our prospects having that kind of potential. The only ones I really would be reluctant to move are Kadri and Colborne, as I do believe they have 70 point potential. Whether the potential of our prospects is real or imagined, or even just exaggerated, that is irrelevant. If you’re making trades, you’re trading based on potential. The reality is that Brayden Schenn will likely never crack 60 points in the NHL, and yet people thought we should move Kessel to get him. So apparently our star players are worth only single prospects, but our prospects all together are not worth any star players. Doesn’t matter how much better, or younger Kessel is than someone else – he’s a Leaf, and that means he’s shit. Same story with our prospects. With our guys, they for some reason only have value once they achieve their potential – with everyone elses prospects, well, it’s practically a guarantee.
