It’s starting to look that way. A sports outlet in Sweden known as “SportBladet” is reporting that Carl Gunnarsson may be extending his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs for at least another two years.
While no contract has officially been signed, agent Peter Werner has informed SportBladet that Gunnarsson has agreed on a two year, one way deal with the blue and white.

From Google Translate, we can decipher the following;
… And now Sportbladet can reveal that he will remain in Toronto for two more years.
“We agree with Toronto, but the contract is yet signed. This shows that Carl is now a solid NHL-back, especially given that the contract is for two years and one-way” said agent Peter Werner of CAA.
While nothing is official until an actual contract is signed, this looks to be good news for the Leafs and Gunnarsson if all goes to plan. The amount of money has not been discussed publicly yet, so I guess we’ll have to wait on that.

If the Leafs go ahead and lock Gunnarsson in for two more years, do they still continue their search for another puck moving defenceman? Or do they just increase his responsibility going forward?
Updated: The Leafs official website has issued a press release for Gunnarsson’s contract extension. It’s confirmed as a two year deal, but there still hasn’t been a cap-hit discussed. Link for the official release found here.

Gunnarsson’s deal will have a cap hit of roughly $1.3-million a year. Seems reasonable.
And there you have it.
