Thursday Mashup: Canada’s Team

Of course I’m talking about the Leafs, who will be drafting at #25 and #30 after the Bruins destroyed the Canucks in Vancouver last night.

The Canucks’ best players didn’t play like their best. In fact, they may have been their worst. Roberto Luongo can’t really be blamed for the loss, but he really didn’t do much to help his team win.

The Sedin twins, on the other hand, were atrocious. Both were -4 on the night, while Alex Burrows was -3. Not much of a top line.

Boston finally managed to bring their best game to Vancouver, which may be in part due to Nathan Horton spraying water from the TD Garden on to the Rogers Arena ice. Whatever the superstition, the stars seemed to align for the Bruins last night as they were on their heels for a couple minutes to start, then proceded to take the game over.

It began to look as if the Bruins were playing game seven of the Stanley Cup Final, while the Canucks were in regular season form.

For me personally, it was nice to see Tomas Kaberle and Michael Ryder hoist the mug. Kaberle may have not been lights out all playoff, but he was solid in the Final. And Ryder played great basically right from the drop of the puck against Montreal.

While both teams are Leafs rivals, I think a lot of fans of the blue and white just associated themselves with the Bruins a little more than Vancouver. After all, the Bruins do play a tough game, and since the days of Wendel we’ve been keen on watching that type of hockey.

The Canucks really went overboard with their foolishness and embellishment, which turned a lot of fans against them. Luckily, we can all sleep easy knowing that Max Lapierre, Raffi Torres and Alex Burrows won’t get their names on the Cup.

For us Leafs fans, this officially closes the book on the season as the wheels get spinning on off-season roster moves.

And that will begin next Friday when the Entry Draft gets underway.

    @ bigslapowski:
Don’t get me wrong, I like LaRose as a player, it’s just that we have to have one of our kids on that third line that is gifted offensively, as they need to play and they need to grow…pretty sure that kadri is going to be there…otherwise, unless we start moving other peices of the puzzle, we really don’t ahve room for him now.
Will Pitkanen being looking for more than 4 million a year?

i think the only way we can squeeze in pitkanen would be to dump komisarek, but i dont think burke will do that anytime soon.

So, Leafs aquire Colorados 2nd overall to trade for Parise…

    Seems far-fetched…but…I’ll take it.

Me to. He clearly states that he would not trade it.

    @ bigslapowski:
That depends if we keep Lebda and I don’t think we will…sign Luke for 3.75mil a year say, Lashoff goes at 600k and Pitkanen at 4 mil and you’re only at 21.5mil…not too bad and you have seven d-men…any injuries would be minor contracts from the AHL. That would leave us 17.5million to sign Bozak, Mac, Brent and Boyce plus Giggy…that would leave 9million to sign Richards with.

Lebda will be buried, Schenn, won’t be anywhere near 3.75 million. After resigning everyone, we will likely still have nearly 17 million to use in free agency.

@ kb: for the record I’m not “willing to give up” on Mac. I’m just stating what Minny would want. There is a difference between what I’m willing to give up as apoosed to what it will cost. What would I give to get a blowjob from my wife everynight? Preferably nothing. What would it cost me to get one? Probably roses, a couple of chick flicks and a back rub….clearly a big difference.

That’s where Leaf fans are always so pessimistic. What a GM wants is not what a GM gets. Asking for something does not mean the pick is worth what he’s asking. Any team asking about it gets a say in the negotiation too. Ultimately, Burke has made it clear he doesn’t care about moving up that much. There is a benefit in trading down as well – especially in a draft like this one.

    @ Cameron:
I was including 4mil for Pitkanen there too…I think he will be, Schenn that is, 3.75 for 5 years, as they want him locked up and that is a win-win for both sides.

    @ Cameron:
It’s like listing your house for sale. If you list it at a price and you get 3 offers, well below what it’s listed at, well then it’s not worth as much as you think. At that point, it’s your choice to decide if you’ll accept what “market value” dictates, or stay with what you’ve got. You can say your asset is worth whatever you like.
