In this morning’s links, Mislav mentioned that the Leafs would be bringing in Greg Cronin as an assistant coach to Ron Wilson.

We’ve now learned that the team has hired both Cronin and Scott Gordon as assistant coaches and will part ways with Keith Acton and Tim Hunter.

Cronin was the head coach of the Northeastern University club, while Gordon is a former coach of the New York Islanders, and also served as an assistant to Wilson with the 2010 U.S. Olympic team.

From the Toronto Star:

Cronin, 48, was suspended in February as head coach of the men’s team at Northeastern University for alleged NCAA violations related to the recruitment of prospective student-athletes.

Cronin led the team to their first consecutive seasons of .500 or better since the mid-’90s. He served as the head coach of the American Hockey League’s Bridgeport Tigers from 2003 to 2005, following a five-year stint as assistant coach with the New York Islanders.

And from TSN.ca

According to general manager Brian Burke, both Keith Acton, who has been an assistant coach with the Maple Leafs since 2000 and Tim Hunter who joined the coaching staff in 2008, will not be back with the team next season.

This looks good for the Leafs, as it seems Acton has worn out his welcome in the hockey mecca. Hunter, on the other hand, will leave Wilson’s side for the first time since 1997.

The team has now brought in what they surely believe to be two bright hockey minds to aid in ending the dreadful post-lockout playoff drought.

It has been reported that Burke did all the firing and hiring on this one, it was not Ron Wilson’s decision. Meanwhile, Wilson has yet to be offered a contract extension beyond the upcoming season.

With two former head coaches joining the staff, including one with NHL experience, pressure on Wilson has never been higher.

    Laughable……

Eklund reporting that his “sources” are saying that the Leafs will offer sheet Stamkos….

With what moron? You need to actually possess your own picks. An abject lie.

    @ looshV:
They do have the picks required if indeed an offer sheet is the way Burke goes.

No they do not. The Leafs need to be in possession of their original first, which Boston has. The rules are very clear that they need to be YOUR picks not ones inherited through trades.

It is ridiculous to think that TB isn’t going to give Stamkos the money. If they do that then the team may as well fold up and leave town now. This is the stuff of complete fantasy.

You’re building the expectations of yourself and others up, with the notion we’re going to get 1 or 2 of these type players:

“Guys, I am ok with keeping the picks. Here are the best picks from 2004 until 2008 going between 20-30
    Del Zotto 20th
    Eberle 22nd
    Foligno 28th
    Giroux 22th
    Perry 28th
    Richards 24th
    Green 29th
    Wolski 21st
    Zajak 20th
    Downie 29th
    Oshie 24th”
The outcome is more likely to be as I said, like this:
    2003
    #25. Anthony Stewart
    #30. Shawn Belle
    2004
    #25. Rob Schremp
    #30. Andy Rogers
    2005
    #25. Andrew Cogliano
    #30. Vladimir Mihalik
    2006
    #25. Patrik Berglund
    #30. Matthew Corrente
    2007
    #25. Patrick White
    #30. Nick Ross
    2008
    #25. Greg Nemisz
    #30. Thomas McCollum

It is more likely, but it depends on your scouting staff. If I’m not mistaken, St.Louis drafted Perron, Berglund and Oshie around the 25 mark in consecutive years. That seems to illustrate to me that it is possible to pick more wisely than others. It comes down to how much you trust the Leafs scouting staff nowadays. Chances are our combo looks most like the Berglund/Corrente package when all is said and done. We’ve found some real gems the last few years, and also missed by a wide margin with guys like Ryan, Devane, Smith, etc…
