In this morning’s links, Mislav mentioned that the Leafs would be bringing in Greg Cronin as an assistant coach to Ron Wilson.

We’ve now learned that the team has hired both Cronin and Scott Gordon as assistant coaches and will part ways with Keith Acton and Tim Hunter.

Cronin was the head coach of the Northeastern University club, while Gordon is a former coach of the New York Islanders, and also served as an assistant to Wilson with the 2010 U.S. Olympic team.

From the Toronto Star:

Cronin, 48, was suspended in February as head coach of the men’s team at Northeastern University for alleged NCAA violations related to the recruitment of prospective student-athletes.

Cronin led the team to their first consecutive seasons of .500 or better since the mid-’90s. He served as the head coach of the American Hockey League’s Bridgeport Tigers from 2003 to 2005, following a five-year stint as assistant coach with the New York Islanders.

And from TSN.ca

According to general manager Brian Burke, both Keith Acton, who has been an assistant coach with the Maple Leafs since 2000 and Tim Hunter who joined the coaching staff in 2008, will not be back with the team next season.

This looks good for the Leafs, as it seems Acton has worn out his welcome in the hockey mecca. Hunter, on the other hand, will leave Wilson’s side for the first time since 1997.

The team has now brought in what they surely believe to be two bright hockey minds to aid in ending the dreadful post-lockout playoff drought.

It has been reported that Burke did all the firing and hiring on this one, it was not Ron Wilson’s decision. Meanwhile, Wilson has yet to be offered a contract extension beyond the upcoming season.

With two former head coaches joining the staff, including one with NHL experience, pressure on Wilson has never been higher.

Still a daily visitor, seldom commentor…but this rates a positive comment for sure :
I’ve been waiting since day1 for Acton to be canned, fired, replaced, traded, anything as long as he’s gone from the Leafs. I’m not so sure about Tim Hunter, but any change will be for the better of the team and players.
Going forward with Gordon, is a very positive step, he’s a player’s coach with a lot of experience dealing with younger players, same for Cronin, and since the Leafs are among the youngest teams in the league again this year, we need that experience.
Draft Day Friday should be interesting if not of the block busters that some are expecting. Maybe i’m a little biased here, but, with Burkie’s track record since he’s been here, i know this.
    I WON’T BE DISSAPOINTED !!!
In Burke, I trust. Improvements will be made

Can someone clarify something for me

Is the next possible lockout after this upcoming season? Is that when the CBA expires?

If so does anyone think that some players will want to do one year deals if they dont know what the situation will look like. Maybe a contract similar to the one Hossa signed with Detroit a few years ago.

This got me thinking about Richards. I know he’s said he wants to sign somewhere long term. But I cant help but think Pittsburgh could be an underdog to land him. I think with their talent they could persuade him.

I have no idea what their cap looks like though. But if I were Richards I would choose Pittsburgh over us if they can afford it.

    @rusty

doesn’t really make sense for pittsburgh when they have 3 great centres already. They need wingers more than anything. and capwise i dont think they could afford that anyway. i wouldn’t do so much tinkering with a very proven lineup that they have, they just need to be healthy.

Pitts cant land richards without making moves… they have about 12 mil to sign 5-6 skaters

    @ rusty:
Pittsburgh only has about 7 million with the new cap numbers to sign 5 or 6 players…no room for Richards there.

    @ CaptnClarky:
Yea I know the center log jam. But what if Richards played the wing. What if Crosby isn’t back yet? Do they trust Malkin’s knees? They have a great setup but if Pitts came knocking I would want to listen

Even if cros and milkin arent back, adding richards into the mix would be a nightmare for them.. unless they unloaded one of the 5-6 big longterms conttacts.. it might take two depending on who they moved

    Kunitz- Malkin
    Staal

    That’s already a pretty stacked top 9
