A big (6’2, 205lb) technical goaltender for the Allaire System, Sparks played 19 games this past season for the Guelph Storm. Posting a .890 Save Percentage in his first year in the O, Garret played a secondary role in which he showed a calm nature and good rebound control. He’s a project as all sixth rounders are but guys like Rynnas, Scrivens, etc. won’t be around forever with the Marlies; when they do move on, Sparks will hopefully be ready to jump from the OHL to the American League.

Sparks tweeted after his selection:

Dear Maple Leafs,

Thanks for turning my mom into a crying mess. And waking me up from my nap. But seriously, I don’t mind. #bestdayever.

With their 9th and final selection in the 2011 draft, the Leafs drafted their second prospect from a Minnesota high school hockey program in Edina High School defenceman Max Everson. From MN Hockey Prospects:

Plays a responsible defensive game, choosing wisely when to join the offensive rush. Everson transitions well, using his positioning and speed to force opponents to the outside. Everson has demonstrated the keen ability of taking away time and space from the opposition. Has the drive to be a workhorse defenseman and could develop into productive scorer at the next [collegiate] level. Everson continues to improve his coverage in front of the net, but still needs some fine-tuning.

Some tweets from Minnesota High School hockey reporter Ryan S. Clark on both Everson and fifth round pick Tony Cameranesi  courtesy of Burtonboy:

ryan_s_clark Ryan S. Clark
Everson is a good pick. He was a Mr. Hockey candidate here in Minnesota and if its not for an injury, gets more love

ryan_s_clark Ryan S. Clark
Cameranesi was also a Mr. Hockey candidate with a lot of speed, flair and when surrounded by good talent, excitement

ryan_s_clark Ryan S. Clark
Everson will play at Harvard while Cameranesi will be playing at national champion Minnesota-Duluth.

Do you think Gardiner will be ready to take over by the end of this coming season (Liles is only the stop-gap in my opinion)??

alright, i had a feeling i was wrong their, thanks. i dont know about their ceilings, its really a tossup and personal opinions. i like what both of them bring to the table. gardiner is more ready in my eyes even though blacker brings a lot of maturity and confidence to the table. burke has given us 2 great pmd prospects, with another coming up in Stu Percy, so we shall see how it all goes down.

i think gardiner should definitely be nhl ready by the deadline, allowing us to move liles or let him mentor his a little for the last portion of the season. i dont want to see him rused in out of camp though, give him atleast half a season in the minors.

this reminds me of your earlier post where you showed your mock lines. i dont see laich and oshie both coming to the leafs. it will be either or, if one of them does come at all. both can play center if they come over here, and that is where both would play. army will be the 3rd line RW, we cant demote him to 4th line LW, that is one really expensive 4th liner, burke will not have that. plus its a huge smack in the face to one of the best leaders and most impactful players we have on the team

the only person i see that could really be the physical presence we need plus being skilled enough to play with kessel is probably mike richards, and that wont be happening anytime soon now…

burke absolutely killed the ducks on that trade. burke knew that he wanted gardiner as the prospect coming back, possibly to replace kaberle in the deal that followed, and made it seem as if lupul would just be a salary dump. but burke knew that lupul would be much more. a tough, skilled winger who can open up the ice for kessel was something we really needed, and it made a big impact. well done by burke, i would have been ok with trading beauch for just lupul, but grabbing a great pmd prospect too? wow, absolutely robbed them.

i think caputi’s ceiling is probably a 3rd liner. really, he doesnt fit our plan anymore. burke has constructed our future 3rd line of Ross-Colbourne-Biggs, which is absolutely sick. best 3rd line we could ask for. burke will still keep caputi around for now though, but look for him to move him out.

yessir. caputi is definitely expendable, for a bunch of reasons. but he still has decent value, and could play a role in any future trade this offseason

same with me, once i read into gardiner i thought they reported the wrong prospect coming back, hes a beauty. and yes i do think that lupul will be a great player for us. he has already proven that he can play great on our top line, and if a trade is made to give kessel a LW ie parise, he still fits in great on the 2nd or third. i like what he does for kessel, he opens up so many options. i would not trade him, nor do i think other teams understand what we have in him, they just look at the big price tag attached. he should be able to thrive again in the nhl playing alongside kessel and possibly richards for a whole season. pray to god he can stay healthy, i think all those concerns are in the past now though.
