Morning Mashup: Ball Almost Rolling

Max Talbot

If you count today, there are just four days left until July 1st, a day when Brad Richards hits free agency and hopefully, Toronto. As nerve-wracking at it might be, there are no other options but to wait and hope for the best.

However, I won’t be talking about Brad Richards today. I know the team’s prime need comes in the form of a top flight, highly skilled No1 C, but are other interesting names to consider for the bottom six positions.

Max Talbot can play all three forward positions. He excels as a penalty killer and brings a high amount of leadership qualities to boot. One of his biggest strengths just might be his performance in clutch games and the postseason. Talbot was an integral part of the Penguins Stanley Cup run in the 2008-2009 season fighting Dan Carcillo and willing the team to very important Game 3, 6-3 victory over the Flyers in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals over the Flyers. In Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals against Detroit in Joe Louis Arena Talbot scored both goals in a 2-1 victory. During that run, he had 13 points, 8 goals and was +8 in the postseason.

It is my honest and objective opinion that not re-signing Max was a really bad decision by Ray Shero and the Penguins. Yes, he might be my favorite NHLer (along with Kuli) playing right now, but he’s also the glue that holds/held that team together. A really happy go lucky, character kind of guy who lights up a dressing room with humor and good, positive vibes. That is perhaps the biggest reason why I want him with the Leafs, but only if the price is right.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Ben Eager signed to play on the fourth line with Brent and Brown and have Orr as the 13th forward.

Will Lashoff want to stick around though? We have our top-6 set, and Lebda will most likely be in the pressbox. Either he spends another full year with the Marlies (we have other guys who will definitely be called up before him) or he looks for a shot at cracking an NHL roster with another team.

As for hanson, I wasn’t sure about him. It might be the same scenario, although I still think he’d be effective in a bottom six role. He’s big, fast and can win faceoffs.

They don’t have the cap room right now to sign him and won’t have cap room until after the season starts, so they are up against a large wall in NY.

I’m sure Hanson wants the references to his dad to stop just as much as you do.

Burke said the defense is set after acquiring Liles, so no Bieksa for us.

BUT.. this new commenting system is terrible. It’s impossible to keep up with the flow of conversation. I liked the other system before. Hopefully Alec fixes this because I need to visit MLHS on my phone slot and the nested comments are horrible. If I hit refreshing I have to go back to beginning to load more comments. Sorry for interrupting.

    Go Leafs!

Wonder if Carter is going to be sticking around in Columbus, he doesn’t seem to happy. Hasn’t spoken to anyone including management from what I’ve heard.

I agree with with that, except I think he’ll be bringing back Lashoff.
He makes a great 7th defenceman for the Leafs.

I guess Lebda is buried then? I wonder if any team would take him for a 7th or future considerations.

Yes it does. If he makes it known that he wants to part ways with the origination, Burke will cut him loose. It’s not like he has any trade value so there would be no point for Burke to qualify him and hope to deal him. We get a freed up contract slot at the very least.

He might not want to stay here because he knows he has almost no chance to crack the roster at any point. Gardiner, Holzer and Mikus are probably first callups and unless Burke dumps Lebda, he won’t be the 7th d-man. We have too many guys waiting for a callup to carry 8 d-men.
