The Leafs‘ former third round pick in 2010, Sondre Olden, has been drafted 31st overall by the Erie Otters (pick acquired from the Plymouth Whalers) in the CHL Import Draft. The Olso, Norway native is a lanky 6’4″, 180-pound center who made three appearances for SEL team Modo as an 18-year-old but mostly played last season with Modo Junior (Modo J20). If he reports to Erie he’ll be playing with Greg McKegg which undoubtedly makes Leafs fans very happy. Chemistry is best built early on.

MLHS’ Mislav Jantoljak wrote this in his spotlight piece on Olden:

“He struggles winning puck battles mostly because he gets out muscled and outworked, and needs to realize that the only way to the NHL is by filling out and getting stronger. That said, the raw talent and frame didn’t go anywhere and is still visible in some of the moves he makes.”

It’s hard to say where Olden might have gone in the draft order if he had more than one year of junior eligibility remaining; regardless, it’s always good to get these European prospects over for some development at the junior level on North American ice, and it seems particularly apt for Olden given the areas of his game most in need of work. He must gain strength and better embrace the physical and two way elements of the game. Mislav tells me Olden seemed pushed to compete against men for Modo earlier than his time despite apparently lacking the necessary upper body strength, and it may have set him back confidence-wise. Given time to develop at his own pace, gain strength and develop a better understanding of a two-way, physical game, Olden has the raw tools – the frame, the reach, the hockey sense, the soft hands – to suggest the Leafs may have something in their 79th overall pick from 2010. He’s a project to keep an eye on.

Well Stamkos out scored everyone on that list but Perry and the Sedins. TO say the Majority of his assits comes off rebounds from his shots as if its a bad thing tells me you dont Coach hockey or have played at any level. Your taught at a young age of playing hockey to put the puck on the net and let guys crash and bag goin hard to the net to pick up rebounds. THATS a very good thing. Your right saying evenone knows he is a shooter however they still cant stop him. Not to mention he is 22 years old. I understand what your talking about how he has veteran wingers with cup rings etc however all the guys you listed play with Very good players. Take Daniel away from Hank, Take Getzlaf and Ryan from Perry, etc etc you can make that argument about every player in the leauge except crosby and OV. Stamkos falls in right behind thoes two guys. If the NHL were to do a Fansty draft with every player avaible in the NHL Crosby goes 1 OV 2 and Stamkos 3

So what does everyone think will happen with Stamkos? I read a pretty good article about the avenues being:
    1. Re-signs with Tampa Bay
    2. Signs an offersheet, Tampa matches
    3. Signs an offersheet, Tampa doesn’t match
    4. Tampa trades him

If we get to move Komi in the deal, I’d jump all over Ehrhoff at something around 5M.

Getting rid of Komisarek basically means we would only have to spend an extra 1-2 million to get Erhoff………

you said it yourself “Kadri PROJECTS to be a top two center”
What did he show you last year that he is ready to be a #1 center? There is a reason he has been put on the wing.
Take off the Leaf goggles for a second. Kadri is not ready to be a #1 center on a playoff team

i think the point is, as of writing these comments, Steve Stamkos is NOT a top 5 player in the league right now. Maybe not even top 5 forward. Sure, next year he could develop more, hone more of his game and become more of a complete player. But until that time, there are more consistent, veteran, physically stronger/engaging players than Stamkos. TSN agrees too.

If his prodcution was consistant over the year that would be a legit argument but St.Louis makes that goals toatl as high as it is. When they moved him off Stamkos’ line and paired him up with Lecavalier (to get him going), Stamkos took a dramatic dip in his scoring. There was nothign great, elite, or top three about his number over the second half of the year. Thats a fact as well.

I like the idea of Weiss. I think he would be a pretty good number 2 Center. However we have Grabs in that position right now. If Grabs would be included into a deal to get a better 1st line center IE, Stamkos, E.Staal i would be all for getting Weiss.

Or If the leafs Strike out on Stamkos, Richards and Stastny Weiss would help this team next season at more than Bozak as a number 1

Leafs acquired Talbot’s rights. If he signs before Friday, does he still count as a UFA signing in the contest for those who picked him?

To the people who think Stamkos re-signs: That would be the ultimate biting of the bullet by Tampa ownership. They know they will loose scores of money by adding to their salary, but just don’t want to part with him. It’s so clear the Stamkos wants to get paid in the 8-9 million range while Yzerman wants it settled more towards thr $6.8 million range. So i think either a crazy teams offers a 10-12 million dollar deal and goes there, or the Leafs work out a trade SOLELY because a) we have the cap space and b) we are his favored team.
