Free Agency Day 1 – Final Stretch

It has been a crazy day. As we speak the Calgary Flames are pitching a plan to Brad Richards. Yes, the Calgary Flames are apparently in the race as well. Fitting, considering it has been a day characterized by the vast overpayment of free agents. Be it the free spending Terry Pegula with his 10 year defensemen deals, or with signing Ville Leino to a six year, $27M deal. Or is the definition of crazy perhaps better applied to Florida, a team that – in reaching the cap floor and then some – signed no less than six players in two days to a total sum of 68.6 million dollars, including Thomas Fleischmann on a four year, $18M contract. Remember, that’s the guy who missed nearly 3/4 of the season because of a serious illness that almost cost him his hockey career. How about rivals signing their most hated rival players?

Don’t worry, we have that too. The Flyer signed former Penguin favorites Jaromir Jagr and Maxime Talbot to contracts earlier in the day. Talbot signed a multi year deal (5 years, $9 million) while the ninth leading scorer in NHL history, Jaromir Jagr, signed on for one year/$3.3 million. Crazy enough? Well it’s only getting crazier with the big fish still out there.

While the Rangers and Kings seem to be getting the most mention in the Richards’ sweepstakes at the moment, with the ridiculousness of the money going around the trade route for a better contract might make increasingly more sense. Not only that, it could give the Leafs a distinct cap advantage over some of these other in-conference teams that are sloppily throwing around money today. To a certain extent though, these type of salary figures are something we’re going to have to get used to with the new heights of the cap floor and ceiling.

yea fuck that, Tallon is one of the people responsible for causing this inflation of salaries. Its amazing what 5M on the salary cap will do to some people.

I agree with everything you said, he would instantly make us a good PP team, him Phaneuf Liles Kessel and Mac(or Kuley), but man I have a horrible feeling he will go to Calgary, just got that gut feeling, main reason is Tanguay Richards Iginla line, magine? Hoping to god though I get a text tomorrow from Tsn saying the Leafs signed him, I’ll cry I think hahaha

Well in terms of me, i’ve always loved Mac. As soon as i saw him score off the wall against the habs, dangling through the dmans legs then sniping fivehole, i was a fan.I dno if it was his first as a leaf? that much i cant remember, but i was pretty sure we’d found something if not special, if not completely flukey haha. Turned out it was the first of the 2. I dno why ppl have been all, “if he wants 3 hes gone” type mentality, but im definitely not down for anything above 3.75, anything below and hes a keeper. And oooo dummying Spacek that made me love the guy, hes ferocious!

Nah, he’s not going to Calgary. They no doubt threw a huge offer at him, but he’s just using it to try and get the other teams to up their offers. I say it’s a toss between the Rangers and the Leafs.

I would also not be surprised to hear in the end that the Leafs offered something like 5 years, but around the 9-10 mil mark.

If he can stay healthy he will be a good pickup for the Avs. Gagne had a neck problem for most of the year but was able to turn it on near the end of the season. He also did pretty well in the playoffs with 15 Games and 12 Points.

Everyone upset about Burkie not making a move is just caught up in the hype. Its Richards or bust. Everything else is secondary.

Also, everyone saying Burkie should keep his mouth shut because he doesnt deliver should stop complaining and start listening. He makes no guarantees. He just is being honest. Being active does not mean or guarantee a signing. Being active is preparing offers, conducting presentations, determining what player you would like and setting the price you are willing to pay (based on cap, short/long term goals, team needs, skill) and then making the offer. Intentions do NOT guarantee signings.

PLUS we can still have Richards possibly AND if we do not we have the rest of summer to improve. Its nice to have a GM who does not panic and will do things the right way.

Yup, I don’t get why some people were freaking out here earlier saying that Burke and Nonis fucked up cause they didn’t sign someone or we didn’t trade for Player X. If its not on their terms then all these FA can fuck off for all I’m concerned.
