Early Morning Notes

Some quick tidbits from Brad Richards’ interview with Hockey Central late Friday night:

- When pressed on the factors most important to Brad’s decision making process, he listed a stable ownership group and a commitment to win both in the short and long-term. He specifically cited the Tampa Bay situation where the team was blown up just two years after taking home the Cup as something he does not want to go through again.

- A decision will most likely come sometime earlier in the day on Saturday. Brad had originally hoped to have the matter resolved on the first day, but the overwhelming presentations needed a little more time to be digested. He apparently slept on it last night and will now talk to his family this morning and make a decision shortly afterward. Richards: “There’s no need for it to drag further than tomorrow. I don’t want this to become a sideshow.”

- The field has apparently been narrowed down to four teams. They are believed to be the Rangers, Maple Leafs, Kings and Flames. The first three teams have all met in person with Richards and his group while the Flames conducted a phone session with Brad’s former GM Jay Feaster.

- The Maple Leafs’ offer has been rumored to be the largest of the bunch, but is structured more evenly without the backsliding element or bogus years of its competitors. With Burke on record against those type of deals as a form of cap circumvention, and having testified against the Kovalchuk deal, we will see if it takes the Leafs out of the running. The consensus amongst industry experts appears to be that the Rangers are the current frontrunners to land the all-star centreman’s services.

The Ranger’s are fine, I’m not sure how people think they are on the verge of falling apart. Are they dominate right now? No. But they have guy’s like Kreider, Stepan, Anisimov, Del Zotto, Zuccarello, and McDonagh coming up and getting better. Plus young stud’s like Callahan, Staal, Girardi, Boyle and Dubinsky. And they have one of the best goaltender’s in the league in Lundqvist. They are in a MUCH better position to win than the Leaf’s are. Blue and White glasses are the only thing that would convince you otherwise.

He was able to trade Toskala and Blake. That had to be somewhat surprising.

Saying Arnott is not good for this team is like saying Roberts was no use to Pittsburgh. A young team needs a mentor or two to help them adjust to the ups and downs of being a pro. Some guys on here have really over reacted to the lack of success these last few days. Burke has the rest of the summer to fill out his needs and then training camp an so on. Building a winner is a process; it doesn’t all happen in 1 or 2 days.

Just because you say you guessed the Phaneuf trade, it doesn’t mean the trade was not a shocker. I can make 500 trade proposals a month too and I’ll most likely be right or at least partly right on a couple of them.

Well, I didn’t mean in it in the way that he would hurt us. Just that at his stage of his career his ability to help us is mainly in the dressing room. He will be 37 and coming off of a 31 point year. Not exactly the recipe for the playoff’s this year. And let’s face it, We should have been ready to start competing this year.
    .
Also, I imagine Arnott just goes somewhere where he has a chance to win again.

I would take Kadri over Stepan, but Kreider over Colborne, Gardiner/Del Zotto could be close, but as of right now Del Zotto is a little better. As for the other’s I’d say at best you can say we’re a little ahead. But it’s not a landslide. Dubinsky and Callahan are really heart and soul guy’s for them. Are Mac and Army equal to that? Not quite sure. Mac need’s to prove he’s more than a “perfect storm” playing with 2 much better player’s.

I have no illusions about the leafs contending for the Cup with or without BRichards, but if you think for one minute that the Rangers with Richards are going to contend with that defense well then you sir have glasses issues of your own.
