Morning Mashup: Liles Embraces Challenge Ahead

Newly acquired defenseman John-Michael Liles has already earned a good first impression with Leaf management, teammates, fans, and, most importantly, some young people in need. Children at the Sick Kids hospital in Toronto visited with Liles yesterday, who made his first public appearance since the trade. He acted as a bright spot for many who have fought hard to live a healthy life.

Terry Koshan at the Toronto Sun summed up the day, including thoughts from Liles on his reaction to being traded to the Leafs and the expectations of playing in Toronto.

The recent history of the Leafs, of course, is not great, with a Stanley Cup drought passing 44 years in the spring. But Liles made it fairly clear there are fewer places he would rather be in the NHL.

“I know a lot of about the Maple Leafs organization and the history involved with it,” Liles, an Indiana native, said. “Having played in the west, and growing up an American kid, you have a sense of it, but you don’t fully realize it, but now that I am a part of it, I am going to catch on pretty quickly.

“I know the Leafs are a young team. When you have the youthful energy on a team and you see the progress they made, toward the end of last year, the record they put together, it was a heck of a run toward the playoffs.

“They were an impressive team to play against, and now joining them, I am excited to be a part of it. It’s a great time for myself and just really looking forward to getting the season under way.”

I agree to a point, but if they suffered more than one injury, especially to the top 4 or 5 guys, you end up with a pretty thin bottom pairing. Better to wait for Gardiner to develop further, unless, like we’ve said, a capable dman comes back in any trade.

Frattin has played 1 NHL game and you’ve already got him ahead of Armstrong?

Much as I’m optimistic for the current team I can’t help but wonder where we will be in 2 yrs time. Burke is signing so many 2 yrs contracts and you can bet your bottom dollar he will turn the likes of Liles and Connolly into some very valuable assets in a couple of years. Although he is pushing to be competitive this year it looks like they have a master plan that is geared for a championship team in a couple of yrs.

Just the majority of the college free agents they signed, they are just fillers until players in the system develop or something better comes along. They will do for now and may even get them into the playoffs and hopefully get a good return when it comes time to trade them.

Not going to happen. Army wont be demoted to the fourth and one of Rosehill or Orr will always be in the lineup.

He may be 23, but you’ve got to remember, the college season is about a quarter of the games the junior guys get so I doubt he’s ready to step up and play 82 games with the big boys right away

If Kadri and Frattin both impress and make the squad, it will be Bozak that gets demoted to the 4th line… Kadri moves to Centre on the 3rd line. Bozak fills in on the 3rd line for key faceoffs late in game and plays the pk… just my thoughts…dont think that there is any chance Armstrong sees any 4th line minutes.

depends what type of fourth line you have if its the 3 minutes a night fourth line then your right but if its a 10-12 minutes plays a key role then i think hed be okay onthe fourth line.
