Questions for Dave Morrison

Good morning folks. Maple Leafs scouting director Dave Morrison has set aside some time today for me for a quick Q&A for the Maple Leafs Annual. While you’ll have to wait for this year’s edition of the Annual for that particular piece (as if you needed another reason to longingly await September), I will also be transcribing some of the material on MLHS. If you have any questions you’d like me to ask him, please post them in the comments section below.

Update: Thanks for all the questions. I’ve spoken to Dave and tried to sneak in as many as I could. The Q&A notes should be up sometime this afternoon.

Who do you expect to surprise at camp this year based on what you’ve seen/heard of their offseason training program, if not just a hunch?

When scouting a player, on average, how many games do you feel are required to watch him in order to get a proper assessment.

Kool idea by the way Alex, scouts are not recognized enough for their efforts. Long travel days and many hrs in cold middle of nowhere rinks.

MacArthur was a great ‘chemistry’ fit last year while Versteeg wasn’t. Can you scout for chemistry and, if so, what do you look for to fit in with the Leafs current lineup?

Dear Dave Morrison: The link below highlights talent from other hockey organizations for
your consideration. I strongly recommend all of them as important pieces in the future progress of the Maple Leafs both on the ice and as a way to breath some life into the sit-on-their-hands, miss-the-start-of-the-period suits in the platinum section. I would also like to offer my services in the future for scouting on this particular initiative. Thank you.

How important is a player’s build? Some players are already filled out at age 17/18 (an example would be Tyler Biggs) and that means that they could be more NHL ready, could mean that they will be more likely to be a bigger player, and also shows that the player is serious about working hard to make the NHL. On the other hand, a player like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is thin as a rail, and considering what he can do at that weight, you can only imagine what he could do once he filled out. So is one better than the other? Is it looked at on an individual basis? Or is it too hard to define?

How about the way Maltby and Lilja block out distractions? Talk about gamers.

Similar question. Is the prototypical player going to become a 6’3″ 230+lb fast skater with wide wing span? Is this more for D and O players may be smaller but will need wheels and high level of skill? Also interested in the evolution of the Power Forward and what he is looking for in such a player.

McKegg is not eligible to play in the NHL. His only options are Leafs or the OHL… unless he runs away to the KHL.

I’ve heard the plan is if he doesn’t make the Leafs he will be playing for Erie with Sondre Olden on his wing.( just drafted by Erie this summer ) Should make for an interesting season for Erie fans.

Hi Dave! We all knew the defensive upside Nikolai Kulemin had but with a breakout season where he notched 30 goals and was arguably our best 2 way foward all year do you see him making another step forward offensively or do you believe 30 goals is a fair assessment of his offensive skills?
