MLHS’ very own Alex Tran had the opportunity to sit down with Maple Leafs Director of Amateur Scouting Dave Morrison, who provided some candid thoughts on the direction that this team is heading and which players to watch in the pipeline.

The rest of the answers will be published in the Maple Leafs Annual magazine, out on newstands in early September. The yearly magazine edited by Alec Brownscombe will also feature exclusive quotes from Brian Burke, Dave Poulin, Dallas Eakins, Tyler Biggs and more.

Stewart for Johnson = a wash (but defense wins championships)
2nd (Rattie) for 1st (Siemens) = win for Colorado
Shattenkirk for McClement = huge, huge loss

Schenn will be signed there is no doubt about that but I got the feeling Burke is going to make another move before camp. My feeling is he will try to find someone to take Komi. That clears up cap room to take advantage of teams like Buffalo who will be desperate if they get close to the season starting and can’t make a trade to get under the ceiling.

I’m really looking forward to watching Gardiner play. There has been lots of hype that he is the best skater in the Leafs organization and could be tops in the league. Could we have Brian Leetch 2.0 on our hands?

i think he will be a good 40-50 point defenceman for us in a few years..im interested in blacker too he just seems like a winner to me and hes very mature

I think our 3 puck moving D prospects each have something different to offer:
Gardiner – skating and offensive prowess, size, lacking defensive acumen
Blacker – a complete package of skating speed passing shooting size and hockey knowledge, all of which needs work but is improving game by game
Percy – smarts and skill, lacking size, which he should achieve
Can’t remember having 3 viable PMD’s in the system

I just noticed he had little tone in his arms…I had heard he would show up with a belly at training camp, except the last few years….you look at other high end players and they are ripped…still like Kabs, although it was time for him to move on (and win a cup!)

I kind of understand his thinking picking up a guy like Johnson who has the potential to be the best dman in the league plus they get a good shutdown guy in Siemens plus they already have Elliot in their system. Plus I think they knew they had a good chance to get Landeskog. The trade that gets me is the Varlamov trade. I know he’s got good upside but being in the western conference and most teams like CLB, Wild, and EDM improving they have a very good chance of picking top 3.

Ya our defensive depth is the best those three guys to go along with Holzer and Gyspers and to a lesser extent Mikus. The thing this team lacks those most I think is that young forward call up that can come in and make an impact not just scoring wise but someone like darren helm who can be a spark plug in the bottom six hopefully Caputi is that guy this year
