Morning Mashup: The Enigmatic Mike K

Mike Komisarek came to Toronto in July 2009. Coming off a solid year with the Canadiens the bruising defeceman opted to test free agency which he did with much success. After all, signing a 5-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, averaging $4.5 million per season can be considered just that after you examine his current worth on the hockey market.

Komisarek had his best seasons playing alongside Andrei Markov, a highly skilled puck moving defenceman. Two of Markov’s main attributes are his play under pressure and supreme skating skills, both of which managed to perfectly complement Komisarek’s lack of speed and his tendency to get caught out of position when going for that big hit.

So far, Mike hasn’t come close to living up to his price tag. On January 2, 2010, with only 34 games played in his debut season, Komisarek injured his shoulder in a game against the Calgary Flames, and on February 3, 2010, it was revealed he would require season-ending surgery. One can hardly blame him for getting injured but he followed that campaign with a horrendous 2010-2011 season. In his 109 games played in a Maple Leaf jersey Komisarek is -17. During his last three years with the Habs (223 games) he was +16. Granted, his play with the Leafs saw him made appearances out of the top 4 Dman group but while that might be a logical cause of his plus minus drop, it’s hardly a good excuse since it speaks volumes about his level of play.

However, things aren’t as bleak as they appear to be. Sure, there isn’t a team in the NHL that would look forward to taking on his deal and yeah, at times last season he did seem like a pylon out there, a pylon with no physical edge but really, things aren’t that bleak. There are two major reasons for this assumption.

It’s becoming clear that Komisarek needs to have the puck less to be effective. Pairing him up with a good solid puck mover can shift his focus to what he does best – defend with an edge. In that regard last season was an outlier. During his first season here he did struggle to adapt but he did hit. At the start of last season, he seemed to lose his edge, probably due to his shoulder injury recovery. Komisarek needed almost an entire season to get it back, but towards the end of 2010-2011 campaign we did see a more confident, hard hitting Mike. Hopefully, that will transition into next season.

Even if we don’t, Burke believes in him, going on record and saying he believes Mike’s game is rounding into form. I know it’s hard to believe, but it is possible the adjustment period in 2009-2010 followed by the injury and lack of confidence in the shoulder coming into last season all clicked to make his life in a Maple Leafs jersey a miserable one. Don’t expect a miracle (him living up to his cap hit) but if he can move past that, paired with a solid puck moving defenceman Komisarek can still play a good enough role with the Leafs.

Plus even if the player in front isnt cleared, if he is focusing all his energy on trying to battle to stay in position in front of the net, he will be less effective as it will be harder to tip pucks and get a clean chance to bang in rebounds.

Data can be portrayed any way you feel like.

A point that cannot be refuted is that since the lockout, the only teams to win the Cup have had number 1 centers that were developed almost entirely by the team.

What do you think my article was? I could have selected a wider range of data to get a more thorough analysis, but you are correct, the new NHL is different.

Since the lockout, no team has won a Cup with a no. 1 center acquired through trade, and of those teams only 50% have been top 5 picks, meaning that 50% weren’t.

That isn’t really selective. Did I leave out the point about the chances of us having a no.1 center acquired without a top 5 pick not being exorbitantly high? Of course, it lenses itself to a better article. No one wants to hear, “acquiring Stamkos would do us no good, nor would hedgin our bets on Kadri and Colborne” (although one of or both of Kadri/Colborne could be legit.

Under that logic, a monkey could tell you that you can win WITHOUT a Crosby/Toews.

A monkey could also tell you that you can’t win by trading for your center (the focus of my article).

Of course this is leaving out that next year let’s say Washington trades Backstrom for Stastny just because and they win, then all of a sudden you can win with a traded no 1 center. But until then, history says no. That was the focus of my article, which it seems you either haven’t read or didn’t understand.

Recently: Joe Thornton, Brad Richards, Peter Forsberg, Eric Lindros, Alexei Yashin… there were more, but I either chose not to include them or did not consider them a legitimate no 1 center at the time they were traded.

    Do you guys even read?

Of course it’s not going to happen as often, but evenzgretzky got traded. But did he win in LA/St. Louis/New York?

I don’t really have a hard on for Stastny either. Chances are one of Connolly/Colborne could do just as well, or hold out for a more sure fire elite center

4 of 9 would have been 44%, which is only a 33% increase from 33%. Not a big deal. I believe I was focused on counting Crosby as a top-5 and forgot Malkin.

Now I am saying 50% of the 6 to satisfy you.

But you ignored that, because you know you can’t argue it.

Why the hate? lol (talking about the some of the comments posted)

One season shouldn’t define a player. He is obviously still adjusting to a bottom pair role and the fact that he had a major injury doesn’t help him. I think I’m probably the minority that is defending Komisarek. He will be a quite, but key piece to the Leafs success next year, if they have any that is.
