Morning Mashup: Leafs Sign David Broll

The Leafs locked up David Broll, a sixth round pick (152nd overall) in last month’s Entry Draft, to a three-year entry-level contract yesterday. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound power forward has split the last two seasons between the Erie Otters, and more recently, the Soo Greyhounds.

More from MapleLeafs.com:

In 41 games with Erie he collected 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) with 51 penalty minutes. He finished the season playing 24 games for Sault Ste. Marie registering five goals and seven assists for 12 points along with 34 minutes in penalties.

Broll, a native of Mississauga, Ontario, played for Canada’s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2010 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In five games, he earned two assists and two penalty minutes, while winning a gold medal with Team Canada.

Broll participated in the Maple Leafs’ 2011 Prospect Camp held earlier this July in Etobicoke at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence.

David Broll won’t be expected to tear up the score sheet or pile up points. It feels like we say this a lot (because we do), but he is a ‘prototypical Brian Burke type of player’ who uses his size to intimidate opponents. One could conservatively project David Broll as a future fit on a fourth line, counted on to throw his weight around and drop the gloves from time to time. However, there has to be reason Leafs brass rushed to put pen to paper with Broll, and it’s likely his physicality combined with hints of offensive usefulness to his game. Writes thescoutingreport.org, who tabbed him as an early third round pick before the draft:

His physicality and ability to lay huge hits are two of the main elements to Broll’s game, but he also has some offensive upside. He’s a great guy to plant in front of the net on the powerplay and does a great job generating offense off the low cycle.

Broll was criticized by scouts for not being in good physical shape leading up to the draft, but Leaf management was impressed with his physical development when he arrived at the annual Rookie Camp in early-July.

You can’t count on Kadri becoming a 1st-liner though. He could just as easily end up as a 3rd-liner, you just never know with prospects. Personally, I see him becoming a 40-60 point 2nd-liner. He has the potential to become a 1st-liner, but even if he reaches that level, I don’t see him being as valuable as Parise. He seems like he would be more camparable to Mike Ribeiro in terms of his skillset. Ribeiro is a very good player, but he’s no Parise, and that’s IF kadri reaches his max potential, something most prospects don’t do. You also have to remember that even if you have Lombardi at center, there are still guys like Frattin and Colborne that can fight for roster spots.

I guess my concern here is I approach Parise differently. If he extends with NJ during the season then he isn’t interested in free agency and wants to stay where he is and by extension isn’t that interested in coming here. If he doesn’t extend then he may be interested in joining us and I would wait to find out. For me the key to Parise is, does he sign longer term in NJ or is he just saying the right things. I would rather keep our powder dry if there is a chance we could get him for nothing in only a years time. Perhaps your first offer isn’t that out of line for an extended Parise, but you sound like you don’t expect Lou to accept anything like that and are prepared to give up far more than I would consider.

I wouldn’t move them either, and avoiding that would mean Kadri, Aulie, and more would have to go instead.

I would trade for Parise but only if I could negotiate a deal with him,no point trading assets if he’s going to walk.

you cant just name off every single prospect we have and think were deep , every team in the league has that many prospects. More then likely only very few actually make to the NHL but for some reason this site is hyping up every selection we make its actually quite comical.

We’re deep in across the organization in general, not in just prospects. Our defence is ridiculously deep, and our offence is deep enough that with everyone healthy, none of our prospects would even land a spot in the line-up without really surprising the coaching staff by outplaying more experienced guys. And I don’t think any other team has as many goalie prospects signed as the Leafs.

We have depth, but lack star power. It’s time to deal from a position of strength to adress a weakness, imo. Enough missing out on great players like we missed out on Carter and M. Richards.

Just a side note: If it is true that Burke was willing to move Kulemin and Kadri for Richards, it must have been the 2nd rounder LA included with Schenn and Simmonds that tipped the scales in thier favor. I really wish Burke would have matched it. Maybe Philly would still have picked LA’s offer to keep Richards out of the east, but it would have been worth a shot. I do like Connoly, but M. Richards would have been a great pick-up.

It was only Kulemin and Kadri, no 1st. That’s what I heard anyways, that he turned that down for Carter, but was thinking about doing it for Richards, but then Philly took LA’s offer before getting back to Burke to see if he had made up his mind yet.

If you were NJ’s GM, would you take Gunnar, Caputi, Blacker/Olden, and a 1st for Parise? I sure as hell wouldn’t. Wouldn’t even think about it.

man I hear that argument all the time, but thats what he gave up for Kovi, a 10 million dollar player. Parise is a 6 mil player and its essentially the same return value… So if that is the value for Parise who may just leave him with nothing, then yeah he will take it. If you have ever read HFBoards every single fan wants a huge return for their star players but they are always let down because as it turns out fans don’t dictate the value of an NHL player.
