Morning Mashup: Lebought out?

The dog days of the off-season are tough times to be a hockey fan. Hockey, or any semblance of hockey news, are nowhere to be found on a Sunday morning in August. As painful as it may seem counting down the 61 days until the Leafs‘ home opener, it is important to keep in perspective that there are others in the hockey world who actually have it worse.

One of those people is Brett Lebda, who seemingly can’t even be bought out successfully by his new team, the Nashville Predators. From convincingly turning Leafs Nation against him in under a month (he had many turned after his first week), to recording a -3 in a 9-3 win, to being the unwanted placeholder that facilitated the Franson+Lombardi deal, this has been a 2010-11 Lebda might want to forego on the old resume.

Matthew Lombardi on the Comeback Trail

Darren Dreger recently reported that Lombardi is making progress. He may not be ready for the start of the season but he “isn’t far off.” Burke did not get his big name number one C but if Lombardi comes back and is remotely himself, the Leafs have three top six centermen to try to get it done in numbers. With Tyler Bozak penciled in on the third line of many armchair lineups, and young guys like Kadri and Frattin pushing for spots, this has the potential to become quite the depth dilemma.

Personally I disagree. I mean the guys where physically ready and where well develope, smart hockey players. While Bailey can still surprise, maybe these guys just aren’t that good?

Komi has proved nothing the 2 yrs he’s been in TO. Can he turn it around? Maybe but till then he’s not close to being a top 4 defense men on any team IMO

I really think either Burke gets Grabovski signed by the trading deadline, or he will become available in a trade for someone like Stastney. Connolly could fill Grabovski’s role on the 2nd line and Burke gets a young 1C.

well even if does help our offense by a little bit is fine as long as we keep our GA lower. But I don’t believe that even with Connolly and Lombardi our offense won’t improve, 250 goals is reachable for sure

I think we will, if Reimer can play like he played last year and Gus can stay healthy and play the way he played at the beginning of the year. Remmember the goalie is the best Pker. Also Phaneuf getting back to his old self and kids maturing, we will do fine, we will miss Brent’s shot blocking, but that is where we get the opportunity to see others shine, like Brown and co.
    Very exited for puck drop

The fact that Lombardi’s injury wasn’t covered by insurance made it hard for the Preds to gamble on Lombardi getting better. Like Keon said’ Franson was the price the Preds paid for the leafs to assume that gamble. One good hit could knock that player out for the rest of his contract…that’s big money

I’m not so sure about Komi. He played with Markov in Montreal and how much was hidden by that fact. I know he would be much better in a trap system but IMO the only way he plays top 4 is if his partner is a top flight d like Markov.

agreed. I would love to see him succeed but I cant imagine it happening here. he just doesnt seem to fit into the scheme of things anymore. Would love to trade him for a guy like Andy McDonald somehow

i get where you guys are coming from with the schenn shouldve played another year of junior but in his case he was ready to learn on the fly. He was physically and mentally prepared to learn in the NHL so while he played well his first year and struggled the second i still feel like he learned more being in the nhl than if he had played junior one more year. bailey and gagner were no brainers though especially bailey that islander team stunk and bailey was so undersized there was no way in hell he shouldve been on that team all season long.

No, he gets a player who’s almost as good as Grabovski to be his top line center.
