Toronto Maple Leafs Player Projections for 2011-12

An annual tradition, here’s the scoring predictions for the 2011-12 version of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I won’t get too much into player specifics since my scouting reports are in the Maple Leafs Annual with further expansion in the McKeen’s Yearbook to be released soon.

Some minor commentary on Kulemin winning the scoring title. When coming up with predictions, the hold of the top spot was so delicate any slump/streak could cost some player the scoring crown. If it wasn’t Kulemin, it could be Grabovski coming off a breakout campaign (and entering a contract year) or Kessel for a third straight season.

Tim Connolly is an improvement over Tyler Bozak but my feeling is that he’s a placeholder for an eventual upgrade at some point in the future. Joffrey Lupul will also bear some of the scoring load providing balance to that line, but maybe not the explosive scoring potential.

The Clarke MacArthur, Grabovski, Kulemin line, which was the de facto first line at points in time during 2010-11, offer a challenge to the Kessel line and keep scoring race tight in Toronto. Any big game can alter the standingas as they stand below.

2011-12 Leafs Players Predictions

GP G A Pts GPG PPG
Nikolai Kulemin LW 25 81 29 37 66 0.358 0.815

Keith Aulie D 22 78 2 7 9 0.026 0.115
Mike Brown RW 26 70 3 5 8 0.043 0.114
Colton Orr RW 29 72 2 3 5 0.028 0.069
Matt Frattin RW 23 29 2 3 5 0.069 0.172
Mike Komisarek D 29 29 0 4 4 0.000 0.138
Joe Colborne C 21 12 1 2 3 0.083 0.250
Jay Rosehill LW 26 17 0 1 1 0.000 0.059

Notes: Average age is 25.3 years old according to the players listed .. only two players are listed over 30 years of age (Connolly and Liles) with Komisarek knocking on the door at 29 .. total goals are a tad high at 235, but injuries – and a few shutouts will alter that.

Matthew Lombardi is not mentioned in the rankings because of the uncertainty surrounding his recovery from post-concussion symptoms. Should he make a full recovery and start the season with the Leafs, he’s a 15 goals, 20 assist player slotted in a third line role that challenges Tyler Bozak.

With Bozak playing on the third line and other teams matching their top defensive pairing against the Kessel line and their second best pairing against the Grabo line, Bozak should be able to improve his numbers considerably!

No, Cameron is nitpicking at the number of minutes top defencemen play. Ok, it’s 25-26 not 30, this argument is getting sidetracked now.

Alec’s post pretty much sums up the argument between you and Cameron vs. Gus at the moment.

Good article. The Leafs have a lot of players who could have big years. There are players, such as Bozak and Gustavsson, entering their third year and the players seem to know their role a little better since the lineup has filled out. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see someone pull last years Grabovski (the player fans were thinking was gonna fade away but surprised everyone with a breakout season). Even Komi may be able to finally fulfill an important shut down role (I believe if the Leafs make the playoffs, Komi could be valuable and step up his game). I also expect to see some players, such as MacArthur and Lupul, to not produce the same way as last year. Hopefully, everything clicks and no player has to be thrown under the bus (now that Lebda is gone)..

You will get no disagreement from me on that one. Things rarely ever turn out the way we expect . That’s why I said I’m probably out in left field with my predictions. For the record I’m very rarely right with predictions because I’m so dammed optimistic most of the time. Lets hope at least 75% of the stuff I got on with today does turn out right.

Oh BTW when I predicted in June we would wind up with Connolly I was called a doom and gloom poster lol.

Sweden goalie Jonas Gustafsson certainly into the game. He’s barking at the Finnish players after the last 2 saves

Im guessing Kadri hits about 32-35 pts easy. Im not sure why everyone was expecting so much LAST year, but not this year. The kid is a beast, and this will only be his starting point

I dont share this ridiculous Kadri love. I dont know what hockey games people watched last year to think Kadri will be on the first or second line this year. When Wilson tried Kadri with Grabbo and Kulemin it was a disaster-they didnt gel and Kadri was out of place. Seemed to me like neither Kuli nor Grabbo wanted Kadri on their line, their play regressed from covering Kadri’s mistakes and from trying to get him the puck only to lose it and have to backtrack. Kadri was also not effective with Kessel-Kessel needs a strong puck possession center-which Kadri is not. Kadri is not strong on his skates so he cannot battle for the puck and then dish it to Kessel. I think Kadri this year will be in a very tough fight with a few others for 3rd line duty and I dont think he is a given for anything. I also believe that people wrote Bozak off too early based on the shit last season but the talent is there in him to be a second line 50-60 point center (I’m not suggesting he’d bump Grabbo)
