Have You Heard? Another Tourney Win
Mitchell Heard went undrafted in the OHL draft. He got picked up and played for the Plymouth Whalers, collecting a total of 20 goals and 51 points in 93 OHL games. He also wasn’t drafted in the NHL, but so far, at the prospects tourney, he’s surprising once again.
Before the OHL, Heard played for the Bowmanville Eagles in the OJHL, a hockey team that recently folded/merged with Cobourg. He scored 17 goals, 30 points in 22 games for the Eagles. Mitchell had an excellent game tonight which goes hand in hand with a very good effort in game 1. I always think effort should be rewarded and even if he doesn’t earn a deal, he certainly earned these two paragraphs.
All in all it was a very good showing by the young Leafs who, as far as this tournament goes, were missing some key players. The game finished 5-1 in favor of the Leafs.
Other standouts include Garret Sparks, who after having a nervous yet somewhat okay game one, picked this one by the scruff of the neck and made it his own. He made a ton of very difficult saves, and more importantly he looked very focused and composed out there.
Sondre Olden had a good game, but what was surprising is him using his body more effectively, even throwing a big hit in the middle of the second period. His second solid showing of the tournament.
Jamie Devane impressed with a good all around performance coupled with very good work rate, energy and determination. Devane was additionally rewarded for all his hard work with a great assist on Brenner’s late goal. Brenner also had a good outing which earned him the second star of the game.
Greg McKegg was miles better tonight. The kid showcased first class passing ability and scored a very good semi breakaway goal. This is why we’re all excited about him. Now, we want to see more. A three point night for the Kegger.
The only bad news is that both Percy & Broll were banged up during play, but we don’t know the details just yet. For now, enjoy the win!
Here is a great bit on Sparks by the Goalie Guild.
