Morning Mashup: Final Rookie Showdown

Tonight, the Maple Leafs‘ prospects look to complete an impressive showing at the rookie tournament in Oshawa with a win and finish a perfect 3-0 for the tourney. The Blue and White will have what are probably their three most NHL-ready prospects back in the lineup against Ottawa in smooth-skating defencemen Jake Gardiner and Jesse Blacker, both of whom were standouts in the first game against Chicago, and forward Matt Frattin, who showed glimpses of his impressive physical attributes but will look to get on the scoresheet before the tournament concludes.

Lineup information will come out later today, but one figures after Garret Sparks split duties in game one and played the entirety of game two, Mark Owuya will get his chance at a full 60 tonight. While Owuya let out the occasional rebound I didn’t like against Chicago, his shot stopping and positioning was quite solid. A big goalie who plays the butterfly style, I could already tell why Burke and co. identified Owuya as a prime pupil for Francois Allaire.

The Senators’ rookies also enter the game 2-0, with Stephane Da Costa stealing the show against the Blackhawks to the tune of a hat trick in a 6-5 win against the Hawks on Sunday. Jake Gardiner was the story after game one, Greg McKegg was a stand out in game two, who do you guys think will shine tonight?

LEAFS LINKS:

MapleLeafs.com has posted the behind the 2011 draft video series on the team website. These are always really interesting.

Might be a late link, but Brian Burke has said the only real competition up front at training camp, at least to start the season, will be for the third line left wing position beside Tyler Bozak and Colby Armstrong. Kadri vs. Frattin should make for an interesting battle and just as good of a discussion on these boards.

Kevin McGran with a story on two Leafs prospects who will play together for the Erie Otters this season, Greg McKegg and Sondre Olden.

Lance Hornby with a story on Brad Ross and the offensive expectations for him in his next season in junior.

Frattin prepared to feel the pressure in Leafland

It’s pretty normal for them to get invited to main camp. They will be gone pretty quickly, I imagine. Heard could very well get a contract.

yeah, i was surprised because Wilson stated last week at the golf tourny his intentions were to trim the roster quickly and get down to 25 sooner than later…..i think HEARD has proven hes more than just a walk on……..looked better than leivo and more draftees

Feel a bit sorry for ottawa, top goalie prospect and number two on depth chart looks a bit similar to our number 5 goalie

stamkos was a 3rd liner his first yr,,,,alot of rookies are not in a top 6 role,,,,he does have the offensive flair as a fill in if an injury arises, or pp time……kadrii think has the upper hand and experience to make it as a 3rd liner winger………maybe frattin and kadri press for jobs and bb has to make a trade to make room for them..???

on that note, our top ranked dman Gardiner turned away from the play and guessed wrong leaving the forward a clear path to the net and ottawa scored a beauty…….im sure that will be the “only time” we see the sens beat our leafs…. LEHNER will be with the sens as a backup,,he made alot of nice saves tonight

i think after watching Gardiner this tourny, he has loads of potential, but he needs to work on his defensive game,,,,,,i think he needs a good yr in the ahl to help adjust to the speed and physicality to the nhl….this was a rookie tourney and he looked smooth at times, and also a little antsy with the puck in his own end..

ummm,,,didnt know you were a trainer in TB to see if stamkos was indeed stronger than kadri,,,,all im saying is apparently kadri is in great shape and that he could play a 3rd line role as the leafs will probably role a top 9, bottom 3…..

Two picks I was excited about when we got them and where we got them were Jesse Blacker and Gregg McKegg. For Blacker, the move from Windsor to Owen sound took massive guts. He not only developed his defensive game in a big way,but he became a leader and an integral piece to that team. The kids an absolute beaut in my books and I think he is going to eventually play an important role with the Leafs.

Olden could turn out to be a beaut in the same mould as someone like Henrik Zetterberg – a highly skilled European with a long development track.

I agree, some think that he has to play in a top 6role, I think if he learns the ropes on the 3rd line (which wont be a typical shutdown line) will only benefit him to make a jump to a top 6 role in the future. A good example would be eberle or Magnus paarvaa (sp) who played on a 3rd line to adjust to the NHL. I’m sure both players will pot 40+ Pts this yr because of the experience of playing in the NHL and gaining confidence.

It seemed to work for them. I’m not saying Kadri will turn out like Stamkos but it’s a good way to help a young guy develop. Putting him in a role where he won’t be playing the other teams best defense men on every shift.
