Luke Schenn contract coming this week?

According to Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun, a new contract for Luke Schenn could be announced by the end of the week, putting to rest a source of offseason unease for many Leafs‘ fans across the nation:

An NHL source indicated on Tuesday that a new contract for Schenn “should be done by Friday.”

In other words, the expectation is Schenn will be at camp on the first day, when players undergo medicals.

Josh Rimer, producer for NHL Home Ice on SiriusXM, added to the speculation on Twitter:

I’m hearing Luke Schenn deal will most likely be officially announced Friday. Trying to confirm but hearing 3year deal around 4million per.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie weighed in with his thoughts, also:

My take on RFAs: Schenn, Marchand, Bogosian, Bailey more likely than not will get done by the weekend. Dialogues ongoing, which is +ve sign.

While all of this remains speculation at the present moment, it is not absent of merit; getting a contract done by Friday would allow Schenn — who spent part of the offseason working out with Shea Weber — to get to training camp in the nick of time.  No time lost, no harm.

One can only hope that “no time lost” does indeed turn out to be the case.

I understand why a three year deal is beneficial, because we’d be negotiating Schenn’s next contract while he’s still an RFA – giving him time to develop even more for a bigger payday in a few years, and giving us the exclusive negotiating rights to him if that happens. It’s tempting to lock him up VERY long term, but that would either have to come via the club overpaying, or the player taking a pay cut during years when he may deserve much more.

As much as I like him, 4mil is too much.

I’d like to see this over and done with. The sooner the better.

He’s worth more to this team than Komisarek. He makes a legit case for $3.5M, at least he isn’t seeking $5M.

I’ll say 3 years, $3.8M a year. He better earn every penny. Not many elite shutdown D can put up 20-30 points too. You can see he is becoming very efficient at what he does as his PIMS have lowered each year. He had like 27 PIMs I believe, subtract 15 minutes from fighting majors, that is 12 minutes or a mere 6 infractions, something along those lines. Dont have his stats in front of me unfortunately.
