Tim Connolly is set to face his former team of ten years when the Leafs square off against QEW rivals the Buffalo Sabres in their fourth game of preseason.

The Leafs’ new first line center has had an inauspicious start to his Leaf career in training camp and will certainly have all eyes on him for tonight’s game (7pm, LeafsTV). A lack of familiarity with his line-mates, Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul, won’t stop pundits questioning his ability to center Toronto’s top line for this upcoming season.

While that will certainly be the story line for the game, there are many more important decisions that the Toronto Maple Leafs head office will have to make in the next few days as they whittle the pre-season roster down to the last few hopefuls. As it stands, Jake Gardiner, Matt Frattin, Joe Colborne, Kenny Ryan, Jesse Blacker, Luca Caputi, Joey Crabb, Jerry D’amigo are among the notable players still vying for a spot on the big club’s roster.

There is a new blog up so you’ll probably get more responses from that thread, but someone posted the lineup down below.

He’s let in 3 goals in 2 games. Are you kidding? do you want the guy to get a shutout everygame?

This is prolly what happens…but I wouldn’t fault Burke if he did it out of camp. In fact I would find the decisiveness in this case refreshing. It just seems to me that Gus is not breeding confidence into the team. As a fan I cringe when the puck goes near him. Whaereas with Reimer and Scrivens I am looking for that big save. Both patience and decisiveness are virtues, which do you apply here?

Seriously? I am not making that decision based on just those games. The goals were not the problem. Like I said it was his uncertainty in the net and mishandling of the puck. Last year he was .890 save % and lost twice more often than he won. The year before he was only .903 or something like that. He just has not been good enough for a playoff team. He is not a kid. We have better younger guys to run with.

I have associates who are huge Ottawa fans and even they admit Spezza is a lazy one way PP specialist. They would love to trade Spezza to Toronto.
    C’mon guys!

Besides your opinion on his play, which watever, you can have that, but if you truly think he won’t get picked up on waivers, then your just an idiot.

Well there may be a team who picks him, who needs a back up with a career .896 save percentage?

IMO, Gus deserves one more chance to prove he belongs here, mainly due to all the off-ice stuff he has had to deal with. However, business being business, this is the last year of his contract and the team has to make a decision with him going forward. If the confidence issues arise or his temper begins to show or his play simply falters, I would expect Burke to make a move.

I get where you are coming from and to an extent I agree with you. I think Gus has a higher ceiling than Scrivens and probably Reimer but those 2 seem locks to be steady, legit NHLers. If Gus can harness his talent and put it together that’s awesome, if not he can put in a season here at split duties or backup. Scrivens best development path is to play a lot of games with the Marlies. Best case for us is that all 3 of these guys become awesome and we have the trouble of having to rape someone in a trade for a goalie. To me based on contract situations the only logical thing to do is go with Reimer and Gus with the Leafs and Scrivens and Rynnas with the Marlies and reevaluate in Feb or March.

How much of it is the player vs the team system he’s played in his whole career? I don’t recall Ottawa ever really having much “team grit”. One or two players maybe but not through the lineup.

I think he’d do better here than in Ottawa. Having said that, I’d never give up Kuli, Kadri, and a first.
