Leafs cut 14 players from camp; roster down to 29
The training camp cuts continue, as the Leafs have re-assigned 14 more players to the AHL Marlies.
Forwards Luca Caputi, Joe Colborne, Jerry D’Amigo, Ryan Hamilton, Marcel Mueller, Kenny Ryan, Greg Scott and Mike Zigomanis, defencemen Jesse Blacker, Jeff Finger, Simon Gysbers, Korbinian Holzer and Juraj Mikus and goaltender Mark Owuya are heading to the Marlies.
Caputi, Hamilton, Zigomanis and Finger were all placed on waivers. They must clear waivers before they can wind up with the Marlies.
Much like the last round of cuts, there are few surprises here. With roster spots at a premium barring injury, young players such as Colborne and Caputi will benefit more from a larger role with the Marlies than fighting for a 4th line job with the NHL club. D’Amigo will look to prove that he is ready for the AHL level of competition this time around, while Zigomanis’ reassignment confirms the battle for the Leafs’ 4th line centre role will be won by one of Darryl Boyce or Philippe Dupuis (with the other as the likely 13th forward on the roster).
Of course, the expected roster structure could change dramatically if Matthew Lombardi is ready for the season opener … but that remains a rather large “if” at this stage.
Remaining on the roster are the following:
Colby Armstrong
Darryl Boyce
Tyler Bozak
Mike Brown
Tim Connolly
Joey Crabb
Phillipe Dupuis
Matt Frattin
Mikhail Grabovski
Nazem Kadri
Phil Kessel
Nikolai Kulemin
Matthew Lombardi
Joffrey Lupul
Clarke MacArthur
Colton Orr
Jay Rosehill
Keith Aulie
Cody Franson
Jake Gardiner
Carl Gunnarsson
Mike Komisarek
Matt Lashoff
John-Michael Liles
Dion Phaneuf
Luke Schenn
Jonas Gustavsson
James Reimer
Ben Scrivens

Hey guys, long time lurker of this awesome site. Probably a little late, but if there are any fantasy leagues’ left I’d loved to join, preferably with a live draft. Regarding the leafs, I’m definitely pumped this year. It’s looking like we have the depth to make up for lack of elite talent, and I’m loving the defense just in pure mobility it looks to be really exciting. Jake Gardiner deserves a spot on this team, but taking the Kadri route won’t hurt anyone if Burke needs time to ship someone out. Will be interesting to see how Lambo fits in, but yeah definitely a really fast team all around. As someone else mentioned it, I can’t believe I never thought of it! Definitely listening to the radio for CBC games from now on. It feels like I get a headache when I’m listening to Healy. Other than that my breakout player for the year is definitely Bozak, he looks great. I think our 3rd line is really going to make the difference this year, while I almost see Grabo’s line as our “3rd” line as in shutdown but being able score because they’ve proven they can hang around against the top defensemen. Mainly those two lines have the most important ingredients imo, that is chemistry and puck possession. All while Kessel will play his game improving on being more consistent and battling more. And no matter how bad Connolly could be he will definitely set up Kessel for some nice goals and I predict Lombardi will get some looks with Kessel. Well didn’t expect to write this much, but it’s nice to get it written out lol. I look forward to discussing some hockey with you guys! TL;DR fuck miller..
@Schenn Sorry I let you boys down, I had an emergency at the wfves uncles cottage, a tree fell and they needed help coming back to the city.
Yup, I’m sure if we had 10 kepers, alot of people would be willing to throw away one of their veterans in the hopes of landing Yakupov or a player coming off a breakout year. Do you think I should increase the number of keepers?
Take a look at my team in the other draft I was doing simultaneously (the one with the 40$ buy in): - Zetterberg – Kesler – Perry Neal – Tavares – Horton Kulemin – Oshie – Ruutu (Raymond, Wheeler) - Phaneuf – Pietrangelo Bieksa – Campbell - Hiller – Pavelec – Bernier
@Cameron Damn Cam, I think you’re the early favourite. Who will be your 5 keepers? My guess: Toews, Zetterberg, Thornton, Meyers and Howard?
Not to alarm anyone. Just watching the Vancouver vs SJ game and the damn Canucks stole our new goal horn!!! WTF??
@lefebvre Talk about looking for problems. That little bit of nothingness bothers you? Sounds like you’d call a flea fart a hurricane.
