The Toronto Maple Leafs announce that they have acquired centre David Steckel from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a 4th round draft selection. Although Steckel offers little in the way of offense, the 6’5 forward provides the team with a big body for the checking lines, a solid two-way game and the skills of one of the game’s elite faceoff men. The 29 year old Wisconsin native carries a $1.1 million cap hit for this season and next.

This is a minor but shrewd acquisition that should align nicely with Burke‘s traditional top six bottom six methodology. During his time in Washington, Steckel was consistently the team’s go-to faceoff man in key defensive situations and led all forwards in penalty kill time.  He is also one of only a handful of checkers around the NHL who can boast 100+ hits, 30+ blocked shots and a positive takeaway/giveaway ratio.

Given the surplus of depth up front, this could be a precursor to another roster clearing move.

You know, criticizing criticism is actually an act of negativity. (and my pointing it out is an act of smartassery)

Some ammo for the Connlley is soft debate. Wendel Clark averaged less than 55 games a season during his NHL career … Mr. Glass of the 80s?

Clearly something along those lines. I thought your earlier comment on the matter was pretty accurate.

When Connolly gives to this team as much as Wendel did then we can have that discussion.

Merely mentioning him in the same breath as Connelly seems ludicrous…at least to me

Wow why is everyone bashing him? Think of steckel as another tim brent didn’t we all love brent for his ability to hit and block shots? Like big deal this guy is more defensive minded and that’s what the leafs need right now

Don’t want to kill your buzz as you are clearly excited as all fuck, but kessel for stastny would be a straight trade in my books, so you are saying landeskog = keith aulie, gunnarson, and percy. I disagree strongly. Those are all potential top two pairing defenceman.

I do however agree that New Jersey needs a goalie, can’t afford parise, and we can help them with both of those. First we need to dump komisarek on a team other than New Jersey, and then package two good forwards and a prospect with scrivens for Parise … Or just wait for his free agency next summer, because I’m pretty happy with our line up.

hahaha, im just messin around guys, keepin things interesting around here. I dont think theres any chance we land Parise in a trade, especially that would interest us. Stastnys possible but at his salary im not sure he’d be worth what we’d have to give up. But if anythings to sway me to believe Colorado could easily be fleeced in a deal, id just have to look at St.Louis’ roster lollllll.

I cant believe that when I woke up this morning and logged on, I was met with a couple people actually having the balls to compare Connolly to Wendel…..fucking lunacy….dont get me wrong, I’ve been known to ‘drink and post’ on a few late nights, but fuck me, at least I stick to alcohol and not the ‘dropping acid and post’ that a couple people are guilty of in the wee hours of this thread…
