Franson Speaks Out

As you might have heard, Cody Franson made a really messy debut with the Toronto media today. Here are my two cents on the matter. Before you start reading, this is part of what was said:

“I don’t want to be a guy that misses games,” says Franson, who is in the final season of his contract. “I’m supposed to be coming into my own. This was supposed to be my breakout year. That’s what I was working towards this summer. I was getting myself into shape to play bigger minutes and a bigger role. I prepared myself for that. For some reason, it just didn’t turn out that way.”

Now, before we start labeling Franson a crybaby, this may not say anything except that the guy really wants to play. Personally, I think many players experience a similar mindset when benched or scratched, but you can argue that not all of them or very few of them speak out (and for a reason). After you admit to that fact, you can then proceed to question the character of that player and whether or not he fits into the team-first model.

But all that seems rather hasty at this point, and it’s important to acknowledge as a newcomer he might not understand the Toronto market quite yet. Coming from a market like Nashville, he probably doesn’t realize what dropping quotes like this one can do in this market’s environment.

But it gets worse:

“You can only wait so long,” says Franson, whose agent told him to be as patient as he can. “I just think it’s one of those things where I really want to play and feel I can contribute a lot more to this team than I am right now. It’s an awkward situation.”

I’m not so sure it was, but it may well be now. ‘So long?’ We’re two games into the new season. Franson has to control what he can, and it’s up to him to fight for a spot in practice, not wait and hope. In a way, this speaks to our team’s blueline depth. The other part of it speaks to his lack of patience and maybe, partly, to frustration over his own performance so far.

“I expected to come here and be a key part of this team,” Franson says. “I had eight goals last year and was plus-10 on a team that couldn’t score. I had a lot of confidence coming here. It’s tough to keep that the way this has turned out.”

Like I said, the guy wants to play, but after this player agent act you get the feeling it was a little bit on the extreme side.

Whatever we might think of the situation, only two things are really important. First off, I don’t think that trying to force Burke’s/Wilson’s hand via the media is the smartest idea in the world. Frankly, those two really aren’t the type to be pushed around, especially by a player who they currently have warming seats on the bench. Secondly, by speaking out in this manner, Franson has certainly put himself in a higher pressure situation. This means, if given the chance on Saturday, he really has to perform and prove that his words have merit. If he doesn’t? Well, coaches have a doghouse for a reason.

Basically you picking up a player and dropping Whitney has nothing to do with the trade, so I’m not sure why you included that useless fact, haha.

Anyways, it depends what Eriksson it is. If you have the Senators’ Eriksson, then yes, I’d deal him for Marleau, depending on how deep your defence is. If it’s Dallas’ Eriksson, I probably wouldn’t do the deal.

My sentiments exactly, I was flipping between 2 hockey games and Baseball and never heard Staals name until the last minute. You cant be having much of a game when Tlusty is more noticeable.

nmc means you cant send him to ahl…i think simpson is mistaken, however he is right and komi does have to submit a list of 10 teams or so before the yr starts.

Why would Burke wanna send Komi to the Marlies anyways? He’s been solid thus far!

Just got in and want to add my two cents. Quote of the week from RW “that little bastard…”about Naz to the media. No respect for Franson in treating him professionally, which means respectfully. Hey Mr. Franson there is a bus that comes around the coach quite a bit. Stay cool, I for one believe in you.

I love the comments. He’s got a point. Franson was the key part of the trade..then you sit him. I agree with management too tho. Make em earn it.

What we have now is a REALLY hungry lion of a player, who’s eager to kick some ass. Gotta love it.

But i can’t help to think Burke must be feeling like..” Just let me get to December boys, to build some trade value a bit more”. Cause it’s more difficult to make a trade early in the season, rather then a couple months into the season, when teams start to falter. They’ll get more desperate, and give up more in a trade…to US!

Wow, everyone really is rolling out the excuses for this guy. The point “he wants to play” needs to leave this conversation. Of course he wants to play. A) he’s a professional athlete and they don’t get to where they are if they aren’t extremely competitive; B) he’s in a contract year. The point “he wants to play” is bleedingly obvious and doesn’t factor into this discussion, it’s true of almost all NHL players.

As Mislav said, I’m sure anybody else in Franson’s position would have similar feelings. Doesn’t mean you pout about it, especially not to the media. Work hard in practice and wait for your opportunity. Tell the media when you play is out of your control at this point, you’re just focused on practicing hard and learning the system. For christ’s sakes, don’t talk about how you can “only wait so long” and how your “breakout season” isn’t going to happen because you didn’t play the first two games.

You’re not in Nashville anymore Cody. Now you gotta put your performance where your mouth is.

One things for sure, he better have himself a good game on Saturday or the heat will be turned up considerably on this guy…..right or wrong (I’m in the camp that believes he was wrong), he’s set himself up for a rude awakening if he shits the bed….in Nashville, nobody notices, in Toronto, a FEW of us might….lol
