Game In 10: Game 19, Leafs at Predators
Share

The Leafs had many roster issues coming into this game. Mike Brown was a late scratch and Matthew Lombardi suffered an injury in the game. The team played well for stretches but the giveaways and our own mistakes haunted us once again. A big contingent of Leafs fans made a trip to Music City tonight, gotta love the dedication of Leafs Nation. RIP Wade Belak, the league loves you for a reason. Also, Nashville fans love to tap dance on the glass.

1 – The Leafs are worrying me, 10-7-2 on the season. In other news, grass is green and food is good.

2 – Solid jump from the puck drop made this game different from other recent Leaf games, but the Predators managed to score on their first shot on goal after a puckhandling error (2nd in two games) by Ben Scrivens. Gunnar also has a helping hand in the goal but error or no error it was still a really lucky goal for the Preds.

3 – Since the opening goal, which came after 5:48 minutes of play, the Predators needed 11 minutes to put their second shot on net. In fact, Nashville had only 3 shots on net during the entire first period. The Leafs outshot them 9-3.

4 – Ben Scrivens made another gigantic stop on the year by stopping a sure goal on a shot by Mike Fisher in the middle of the second. Immediately after, Luke Schenn, who’s playing better hockey of late, stops the puck before it crossed the goal line saving Scrivens’ rear end. So basically, Ben’s game plan is making a mistake on the first goal then standing on his head for the rest of the game. Interesting.

5 – PK was solid, PP was solid. After going 1 for 2 on the PP against the Coyotes, the Leafs went 1/2 tonight. Liles made a really smart rush up the ice when the Predators wanted to change and sniped one. Need to keep it going, but it’s really nice to see our powerplay finally producing and our penalty killing killing (5/5 in the last two games). The team was also excellent in the faceoff circle.

6 – Bad giveaway by Dion and the Predators take full advantage. There were times in tonight’s game when our captain was fantastic defensively. Then there were times in tonight’s game where he looked really horrible defensively. The shot advantage the team gained during the first period was negated after the second. The Preds outshot us 14-8 in that period. The game ended with the Leafs vastly outshooting Nashville (39-21).

7 – Quietly and without much fanfare, JM Liles has collected 11 points on the season along with scoring 3 goals so far. A smart, and cheap, offseason move by Brian Burke.

8 – Matthew Lombardi got injured late in the second and he didn’t return. Just what the doctor ordered, right? Not enough injury problems on the Leafs for the hockey gods, I guess. Komisarek left the game in the third… Activate the Marlies!

9 – I love the guy, but Nikolai Kulemin has to start generating offense. He’s doing what he does defensively, but when you’re a top six forward you’re counted on to produce offense – this isn’t news. Good late scrap between McGrattan and Rosehill but McGrattan spoils it by being a clown at the end. Apparently, winning fights against helmets is pretty satisfying. Bleeding knuckles are just the icing on the cake. Craig Smith – top, top, top shelf? Even Fisher hinted a smile.

10 – 3 mistakes, 3 goals against. That was the story of this game. Pekka Rinne is good at tending goal. Expect something. Soon.

unfortunately that does tend to happen a team is struggling and they play the Leafs and get out of it although doesn’t that tend to happen more often when the othet team comes to Toronto? No doubt Canadian players on the other team getting motivated playing a game in Toronto perhaps with family and friends watching? We actually may have the advantge with this game being in Carolina so the few fans at the game might turn on them if we can get on them early…

agreed and I know it’s really early but I see lots of good qualities similar to Reimer in Ben…

Agreed. It’s a double edged sword being in T.O. Great fans and passion…but teams and players always get up for a game in T.O..usually on Nationally. More so then a game in TB or Carolina, that’s for sure. I would bet we lose anywhere from 4-6 points just to the “motivated” factor alone. lol Of course, no way of measuring that, but players certainly look for different sources from game to game. I prefer us on the road for CAR that’s for sure.

Some of the saves scrivens is making are at a different level. It’s the easy ones killing me.

some of those easy ones also appear to be bad luck anyway if he can make the hard ones that is a huge bonus as he seems to be mentally strong and weak ones are probably more to do with concentration that ability which he should be able to overcome plus getting use to his D more should also help.

I would actually love a tandem of Reimer and Scrivens for the next 3-4 years. Kinda like Min had a few years ago with Roloson and Fernandez i think? Man, seems liek a while ago now. Anyway, having two steady solid goalies in net that the team ACTUALLY trust (and doesn’t just say that for Gus’s sake) would be awesome. They both seem to have that mental toughness to grind out a game.

I agree it would be great I think a change of scenery for him and playing in Toronto would revitalize him…lets hope so.

Since reports suggest they are looking for forward scoring depth though it may not be a fit for what we could offer unless there was a threeway which as you know would be extremely unlikely in todays NHL.

agreed and I thought it was funny that both of them actually will appologize to their team for a bad outing when they get to the bench

Okay i may be coming into this conversation at the wrong time but are we SERIOUSLY talkinga bout E Staal being traded or more fantasizing? Was there some rumor or whisper that I missed. I would probably cry sweet sweet tears of joy if E Staal became a leaf… he may be the most underrated player in the league!

Allow me to expand upon “under-rated”. The guy is an elite level talent (yes i know hes having a shitty year this year) but when has he ever been mentioned in the same regard as other big time players. The guy is a game changer and if he was surrounded with a supporting staff he would be unreal. Just a personal assessment, but thats where the under rated is coming from.

Haha yeah. That’s the true mark of a great goaltenders. They feel like they’re are supposed to get the ones that you’re not supposed to get. I think every goalie should have 1 or 2 saves a games they’re not expected to get….for the team to have success. Imagine NYR without Lundqvist? I bet they would be finishing in the bottom 3 or 4 post in the conference without him. He steals a lot of games for them…but it’s become the norm.
