Over the weekend, the Marlies swept a back-to-back against the first-placed Eastern Conference team, the St. John’s IceCaps. They now sit first in the North Division with  27 points and a 12-5-2-1 record. With Joe Colborne and Joey Crabb making positive contributions with the big club, the likes of Nazem Kadri, Marcel Mueller and Mike Zigomanis have stepped up and filled the offensive void. Meanwhile, Mark Owuya and Jussi Rynnas continue to perform well between the pipes in Ben Scrivens‘ absence. The Maple Leafs lead the Northeast, the Marlies lead their division, and the quality organizational depth Brian Burke and his management team have assembled is shining through as we approach December. It’s a good time to be a Toronto hockey fan. Your weekly Marlies release:

“The Marlies went 2-0-0-0 in their two games last weekend. Jeff Finger scored the overtime winner with 29 seconds remaining in regulation time on Friday night to lift the Marlies past the IceCaps, 4-3. Nazem Kadri factored in on each of the Marlies goals, registering four points (two goals, two assists); while Mark Owuya won his third straight game, making 29 saves. The Marlies power play clicked twice, with Mike Zigomanis recording assists on both of the man-advantage tallies.

On Saturday, the Marlies dropped St. John’s, 6-3. Toronto’s three goal second period propelled them past the IceCaps for the second straight night. Ryan Hamilton was named the game’s first star, finishing with a goal and two assists. Finger, Darryl Boyce and Marcel Mueller also registered multi-point games in the win. Jussi Rynnas made 25 stops for his third consecutive win between the pipes.

- The Marlies penalty killing unit ranks first overall in the AHL with an 89.8% success rate. Toronto has only allowed power play goals in six of their first 20 games so far this season.

- The Marlies are 9-0-0-0 when leading after 40 minutes.

- The Marlies are the only team remaining in the AHL without a home regulation loss. Toronto is 6-0-1-0 at Ricoh Coliseum this season.

- The Marlies power play has scored four goals over their past two games going 4-for-9 (44.4%) over that stretch.

Upcoming Opponents:

The Marlies play the Grand Rapids Griffins twice this week. On Tuesday night the two clubs meet in Toronto for the first time this season. The Griffins won the previous matchup on October 14 in Grand Rapids, 3-2. Chris Conner leads the Griffins in points with 23 (seven goals, 16 assists). Grand Rapids has lost two straight, and have only won three of their past 10.

On Saturday the Marlies host the Houston Aeros at Ricoh Coliseum for a 3pm puck-drop. Toronto defeated the Aeros 6-2 three weeks ago in Houston. Marcel Mueller recorded three assists; while Mark Owuya won his first pro/AHL game in his first career start.

The Marlies host the St. John’s IceCaps on Sunday at 1pm. Toronto just won back-to-back games against the IceCaps last weekend. Marco Rosa notched four points against Toronto in the two losses.

Time to hit the hay…I’ll leave it with this…If a deal goes down with the Leafs and Ducks my guess is…

Grabo, Gunnar, D’amigo and 2012 1st for Ryan

It’s somewhat of an overpayment but think of it as part 2 of the Beauchemin/Gardiner,Lupul deal just as the Kaberle to BOS deal was part 2 of the Kessel deal. Chiarelli over payed for Kaberle to even out the Seguin portion of the Kessel deal and now Burke will over pay to even out the Lupul portion of the previous trade with Anaheim.

    Goodnight…

Grabovski is a pending free agent though. He might be looking for price/term that doesn’t make sense, while Kulemin is under team control at lower cost for at least a few more years.

Doug Maclean siad Kadri, Schenn and a 1st or 2nd(reason why he’s in broadcasting) but our team would look pretty sick.
    Kessel-Connolly-Lupul
    Ryan-Grabo-Kulie
    MacA-Bozak-Army
    Lombo-Steckal-Brown
    Crabb
    -
    Dion-Gunnar
    Aulie-Gardinar
    Komi-Liles
    Franson

    Anaheim’s team
    Selanne-Getzlaf-Perry
    Kadri-Cogliano-Blake
    Smith Pelly-Koivu-Hagman
    Parros-Maxwell-Gordon
    -
    Visnovsky-Schenn
    Beauchemin-Fowler
    Sbisa-Lydman
    Foster

Toronto would have a sick top 9 or 10(if Lombo comes around). Anaheim get a pretty good prospect in Kadri and would have a great young d-core with Schenn, Fowler and Sbisa. With some nice vets to mix in with them. Plus there top line would still be sick.

Do you truly think the Leafs are one of the worst defensive teams, or do you even for a second consider that just possibly it might be a function of the style the Leafs employ? The key is scoring more than the opposition. Those Edmonton teams of the 80′s must have been some of the weakest defensive teams by your lame definition. If the Leafs played the 1-3-1 trap, the would probably be one of the top defensive teams in the league….but boring as shit and with no guarantee they would be any higher in the standings.

How the hell could you get that out of what Burke said?? Your Grabovski hate blinds you…and stop remembering his play from 3 years ago when you evaluate his worth. He is worth more to the Leags than he will fetch in a trade, so you are going to have to suffer with his stellar play for a lot longer…

Other then his one goal in Montreal this year he has not been stellar at all, he has actually played rather poor. However, he was stellar last season and MacA was also playing piss poor at the start of the season and is now playing unbelievable, grabo just needs something to spark him and get him going this season and he will be fine.

I think the main reason people feel he is expendable is the emergence of Bozak and Connolly and Colbourne. This leaves Grabo the odd man out, Im curious to see how wilson squeezes him back into the line up with everyone playing so well.

I’m calling a sweet Kessel goal tonight which will go something like this…sweet little half clapper tipped off of Chara’s jock which should perfectly deflect off of Thomas’s mask and top right cheddar!
