In which Ron Wilson announces his own contract extension

Of course, as you are all aware by now, Wilson had earlier taken to Twitter with a less-than-subtle hint for Santa Claus:

Looks like he got his wish. Personally I think he should have asked for new penalty killers, but to each his own.

Love him or hate him, you’ve got to admit no other coach uses Twitter quite like Ron Wilson does. It’s only fitting that, given various exchanges the media this season and others, he would take it upon himself to break the news of his own extension. On Christmas Day, no less.

Is Wilson’s tweet guaranteed to cause the more literal types to blow a gasket over channels of communication and the ethics of trolling Twitter with breaking news? I would be shocked if at least a couple of the usual suspects didn’t get their backs up over this. Is Wilson’s tweet further evidence he may be among the most entertaining hockey follows on Twitter? Of that, there is no question.

Tyler Dellow of mc79hockey puts it best:

Indeed we do. Here’s hoping everyone’s Christmas morning was as joyful and merry as Ron Wilson’s (apparently) was. What’s in your stocking?

    Wiski – born in London. Spent 7 years in Toronto, left my heart there. Earned my Canadian citizenship. Married a Torontonian, avid Leaf fan. Have spent 20 years in different parts of the US. Both my kids were born in Atlanta. As much as I have enjoyed moving around, I miss To and particularly the Canadian people.

    Wearing my Santa hat I told my wife that I grew up believing in Santa and the Leafs, then I switched and put on the new Leafs toque she got me and told her that the one thing I’ll never stop believing in is the Leafs… Go Leafs Go and Merry Christmas to everyone (that celebrates it… otherwise happy Chanukah, etc…)

    Doubt this extension includes a no-fire clause so if he shits the bed he can still be gone. Too much blame put on coaches IMHO; these players are high paid professionals so when they come out flat or make bonehead plays they really only have themselves to blame. We have lots of new assistant coaches and the PK still sucks so how can anyone blame RW for that?

    This was my coal in the stocking. It costs alot but still isnt a diamond. Just like RW kinda useless and could be better. Anyways i got the 3rd jersey for Christmas :-) pretty stoked

    I got a phil kessel game used 3rd jersey for christmas, very happy!
    As well as tickets to a game in a private box from my uncle! Love him so much!

    I think it was a big mistake to sign Wilson to the extension this early, at least wait to see if we make the playoffs…i think Burke will be on the hot seat if this doesn’t work out, he usually doesnt make mistakes but i think this is 1 of them. Same bullshit penalty kill after changing every single player on the team. I dont blame is on Cronin, i blame it on the head coach

    we said that about Grabovski last year too…I have a couple buds who regeret buying the grabo.. always safe for the cornerstones (phaneuf, schenn, kessel etc)

    I really hope we dont lose Eakins over this, i still believe he is the future coah of the leafs. No one can argue the job he does with all the young guys preparing them for the NHL. Look at Kadri as the latest example, players leave everything on the ice for Eakins, they respect him

    Im also on the Eakins bandwagon, problem is the only chance we have getting him is if we miss playoffs by a wide margin. If we make playoffs or barely miss I imagine Wilson will stay. Hopefully we either make playoffs or not get close.

    Capn — gotta hope that like Nonis, Dallas gets the pay and the promise. There must be some understanding b/w Dallas & Burkie, as Burkie seems to give Dallas free reign with the team and the media. I also believe Naz and Joe will be singing his praises, loud and clear.

    Aside from the abismal PK if the season were to end today the Leafs would be in the playoffs. You wouldn’t have been able to say that in the last 3 years, so there is improvement and Wilson should take credit for that. I personally would have liked to wait for the end of the season but Burke is smarter then me on this topic so I trust his judgement. As long as the Bud’s keep winning games Wilson shouldn’t go anywhere.
