While this trade has likely no bearing on anything ever, the Leafs have dealt Luca Caputi to the Anaheim Ducks (surprise, surprise) for left winger Nicolas Deschamps. Both are minor leaguers and should remain as such.

From James Mirtle:

Leafs acquire Nicolas Deschamps from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Luca Caputi. Also recall Holzer.

The plus-side for the Leafs in this deal is that they replace Caputi with a player two years younger in Deschamps – born in 1990 and selected #35 overall in the 2008 draft. The Leafs seem to be getting the prospect with higher upside but neither have lived up to the potential their drafting clubs saw in them.

Deschamps had 46 points in 80 games for the Syracuse Crunch last season, while this year he’s a been a bit slower, notching only seven in 31 games played.

i think grabo could be a good second line center on a playoff team… at least last years grabo could be. He may be small but last year he was all over the ice in the offensive zone, maybe not throwing big hits but using his body really well to knock people off the puck, maintain control and tie people up on the boards, and sometimes even looked fairly dominant down low. If we could upgrade the top line C to a bigger player i think we would be fine with having grabo in that position come playoff time.

Staal’s cap hit is $8.25 and his salary is irrelevant to the richest team in the NHL. If you trade Schenn and waive Lombardi and Orr its the same as Staal’s cap hit. Our team would be much much better IMO.

It’s irrelevant to us, but not to the other teams who would be interested in acquiring his services, hence, value isn’t there.

Understand your sentiment, but I see it as more a case of not closing the door to the possibility of future trades with Stevie Y.

I like it Cam! Seems like we’re giving up enough there to make the teams in question take it seriously, but both sides would get significant talent in return. I think those moves would speed the process up significantly.

Man…Exciting time of year now. Burke is chomping at the bit for another big deal. The fact he’s said the two most exciting times for a GM is trade deadline and the draft, virtually guarantees he’ll do something note worthy soon here.

The more I think about it the more I think this is a pretty fair deal. One of the more sane deals that I’ve seen on MLHS…

i mean, he may perform okay. whos to say. but i think it would be easier to get a big second line centre like J staal or Dubinsky than it would be to get a big 1C. i actually like Bozak, but think that Lupul is rather horrible defensively. Ideally, id like to see:
    JVR – Bozak – Kessel
    Lupul – Dubinsky – Kadri
    Kulemin – Connolly – Frattin
*still would like to fit downie in there if possible tho

I never said I wouldn’t want him on the Leafs, just not at the cost of Schenn. That is why I said that it would be better to consider a decent prospect (maybe this is why Holzer is coming up, showcase time?) and a 2nd. Schenn, while playing weak this season for the most part, h still has a big place on this team moving forward.
